Premium price tag but lousy service! There should be no star at all! I bring my family of 5 came for dessert around 8.30pm. There quite a few empty tables around but we were assigned to a long table underneath a staircase. The area is really tight. The wooden stool is not stable and there is no back support. I politely request the waiter to change a table for us. He said will speak to his superior. A Chinese lady came and ask me whether I requested to change the table. I never encountered such a rude waitress that will ask a customer "Are u ordering any mains?" When I told her no as we just ordered some cakes and drinks. She just look at me and said no. I replied her "Thanks and we will leave early." I did mentioned to her certainly a bad review for them. She just walked away. Even my 9 years old daughter said the lady is so rude! Thank you China House and you have loss a customer because of this lady.

Ambient is great. Location is good. Like most downtown cafe places , parking is a nightmare. So best to take a Grab there. Cake is excellent. Coffee is great. Cocktail is good too. Nothing is bad here. Unfortunately, we met with a rude waiter that ignored our "excuse me" call(walked past our table) when we wanted to order more food. He showed us the " I am not serving you" face. Luckily another staff nearby saw us and hurried to answer our call. Not sure why the behaviour, hopefully this can be addressed. The two female staffs were ever ready to serve with a big smile. Overall, service is good if we disregard the one rotten apple. Price is Melbourne level but the value is there. Toilets r rudimentary with "juicy" murals. It is clean. Lighting and ventilation r good. Highly recommended.

Heavily interested for this shop long long time ago and now finally got chance to try this out. Not sure is it my expectation too high and cause the cakes feels under average. Of course, i'm order their signature tiramisu with alcohol, but the cake like (dipping in the water after baked) and make the texture weird (not cold enough too). The nuts and cream layer not bad just the cake layer... But I really like this kind of theme cafe, can explore make your own arts and really comfortable and good experience.

5/5 for the ambience!! Great for hangouts. There’s a lot to do, you can doodle on the tables and if your art is nice enough they’ll put it up, they have board games, and even their book w collection is actually pretty good. 4.5/5 for the cakes. Their slices are H U G E. Personally I really liked the tiramisu. It’s nicely soaked in coffee/alcohol and the cream is light, and even the crust is nice and sweet and crunchy. They have a wide variety of drinks too.

Are you finding a cafe that has great interior but horrible customer service and low quality food ? Well this is the perfect place for you. 1. There’s no host at the door, so we don’t even know if we should queue or just walk in (as the door is tinted). We decided to walk straight in, one Chinese male waiter came up and ask us how many pax do we have. We answered politely but then this Indian waitress used a harsh tone and asked us to wait by the door. 2. After 10 mins of waiting blurry at the door, we walked in again, and we got seated at a new dining area (the chinese waiter allowed us to sit there) and we started ordering our food. 3. There’s another waiter (the one who took our order) informed us, we should order our cake at the cake counter by mentioning our table number. IRONICALLY, when we arrived at the cake counter, the lady at the cake counter and the same Indian waitress “shoo” us away, telling us to order our cake at our table. The same chinese male waiter was beside the cake counter, so we ordered our cake from him. Unfortunately, he forgot our cake order and we waited for around 20 mins, BUT STILL no cake. 3. My friend went to the cake counter and asked if our cake was ready. The waitress asked the other waitress, “why are there people at that table ?”, and told us there’s no cake order from our table. They started discussing badly about us *infront of us*. They assumed we just walked in ourselves. They only apologized when my friend got pissed, saying “they were busy”. 4. The main dishes took very long, and the drinks were later than the main dishes???? Everything was pricey, but it’s so not worth the price, wait and terrible customer service. The sticky banana loaf tasted like a dry sponge, something i can buy from my canteen for less than RM5. OVERALL, i would rate my whole dining experience 0/5 stars, but the minimum is 1 star. So i will give it a 1/5 stars. Conclusion, if you want a nice trip in penang, please avoid this cafe at all cost. There are better cafes along the same street.

This restaurant has a different vibe to it altogether. It is a restaurant with multiple personalities. Very narrow but runs through the whole block. Tagged as the longest restaurant or maybe it should be given that title. Please do check it out if in the area. Ordered the beef burger, which if you look closely has a pineapple slice too. I am the last individual to eat pineapple but somehow this combination worked out. I liked it. They are also known for their many desserts and cakes.

Food was pretty decent, the cakes were good as we remembered it…but the SERVICE was a total let down. We were a party of 4, for a friend’s birthday dinner, and were seated in the dining room right behind the counter. Only one other table was occupied as it was a Monday night. There was a waiter who was only interested in serving the other table, and after handing us our menus, never returned to take our order. We waited for 10 mins and nobody peeped in to see if anyone needed any service. There was a staff doing some admin work by the piano in the same room, but he was oblivious to our needs. All in all, I had to get up 4 times, and go out and speak to someone behind the cashier to get someone to 1) take our order 2) clear our plates and serve our dessert 3) bring us warm water 4) bring us the cake that we doggy bagged Such a let down, China House. Don’t seat anyone in the dining room if you’re not managing your floor staff and service levels efficiently.

Good and relax ambience. Can draw while eating here. Some of the cake contained alcohol. However, the staff (guy) is impatient and call us to wait outside with loud voice as i just have one step with my left leg into the cafe and open the door by myself. The cafe at that time is not that packed actually and just have few people. The girls serving cakes are nice and friendly. The staff (guy) then bring us to the table but the table is with ants. At first, he just swipe off the ant with his hand and call us to sit. He only willing to change the table after i claimed that there are numerous of red ants.

there is nothing good about it. really terrible food. this bottom part of my tiramisu is like a soaked sponge. it's not even a sponge cake. terrible service too. no one is giving us clear instructions about how we order and get our table. they kept saying they're busy and full, but we can see that there's only few customers. the drinks are not worth the price especially if they taste basic.

Wonderful cafe and bakery in an old building on Beach Street that is now being given a new life. The cakes and pastries are delicious. Ambience is just a tad dark (nice!) and you can’t miss the old world charm. Best - Tiramisu cake is a delight. Just the right flavors, soft and creamy. Variety of other cakes with almonds, pecans, walnuts, banana, apple and …. Chicken pie is good too. The place can be crowded during peak hours and holiday weekends. But the wait outside is usually less than 10 minutes. Parking is tricky in this part of town, so you may need to drive around to hunt for vacant spots.

The place is well hidden inside a ridiculously long shop lot. The place is packed with people, and filled with an odd mix of decor, from paintings and books to old stuffs that you would find at your grandpa's house. They have a nice selection of cakes and drinks which were good enough for me. Did not try any of their savory dishes. It's a good place to get away from the heat and humidity outside and chill out for a while.

This place is a no stranger to many cafe hoppers. It has been in the state for quite some time and be here for this long, we must commend that it’s definitely due to its good food or service. Loved the tiramisu and drinks that we ordered. However, the service could improve a little.

Tried the earl grey chocolate cake and it taste so bad and dried. While the caramel cheesecake is just so… I dunno what to say, my wife bake better cake than this. It’s just so overrated. Disappointed.

Beautiful location, however the cakes and drinks leave a lot to be desired. Tiramisu cake and carrot cake feels basic, chicken pie is great. For the price, i do not really recommend unless you enjoy the atmosphere. Drinks average price - rm15 Food average price - rm20-30 ++

They provide various kind of cakes which are really delicious. One of my favorites there is Tiramisu cake. The place is cozy and suitable for hang out in the evening. You need to go there earlier as they often fully book. Otherwise you have to queue to be served.

Love the ambience of this place♡ Suitable for small/big groups, even family with young children (the drawing supplies should keep the kids busy for a while😆) Food wise, alcoholic tiramisu and chocolate cake is fantastic! I ordered mint and lime juice to tone down sweetness of the cake, will go back next time to try out other desserts 😊

They ran out of tiramisu and instead I somehow got a slice of Delicious Death Chocolate Cake. It is good but cannot somehow associate the name to how it tasted - reminiscent of a chocolate fruit cake. Quite expected a rich chocolate moist cake. Also, the place in itself is relaxing and worth strolling around - it has a shop, a courtyard and a bar.

Many guidebooks recommend this cafe, so we visited there. Yes, the interior of this cafe is quite nice, old classic style shophouse is unique and cake was quite big but delicious. Maybe too big and too sweet but it worth the money. However, service is not really pleasant. We visited there during their busy time, and we were to sit at high table with other guests, so I asked them to let us move to the other table when it became available. But simply they said no because they were too busy to take note of such request. Quite rude.

I went to this place twice while in Penang. The first time, the staff, including the cashier, weren’t very welcoming. None of them seemed eager to take our drink orders, so I ended up ordering them at the counter along with the cakes. The guy at the counter was pretty arrogant, and after taking my order, it almost felt like he rushed me back to my seat – not a great experience. To top it off, he forgot our cakes, and we had to wait ages. It was actually a woman, who I think was the boss, who came to apologize. Now for the food part 😂. The matcha was alright; they use Niko Neko Matcha powder. The tiramisu’s sponge cake was too dry for my taste, and I couldn’t really detect any alcohol. It was just average, didn’t live up to the hype. On my second visit, the service was better. I was intrigued by the croissant pudding and gave it a try. It was decent, though oddly, one side was dry and the other wet – can’t figure out why. Overall, the cake prices were a bit high. I don't think they’re really worth it.

Enter the restaurant no one greets. Talked to the bartender for a table. He doesn't care. Not making any effort to call the waitress. Waited for 10 minutes until the waiter come. And she is so grumpy. Tried the tiramisu cake the peanut was so stale very hard to chew. The love cake quite okey. The food take so long to come out. We have to wait 40 minutes. Asked the waiter where's our food only to be said just wait it will come. The air inside is very stuffy. Not recommended

*Street parking here might be a bit challenging as the area has a higher uptick of traffic, so it really depends on your luck. **It should be noted that this review is really specific to my experience as I can see that they do have things that I would likely be interested in (such as performance nights with craft beer being offered). So take this as a snapshot of my experience then only. Ambience: Honestly was a bit stifling. It felt like most people were just squeezed in wherever possible, and it didn’t feel like you could take your time to enjoy your meal there with how packed the place was. Service: Although I could see that most staff were doing their best and were friendly enough, I wasn’t a fan of how rushed the environment was. This meant that it took much longer to be seated, some staff were more short-fused than necessary, food took much longer to be brought out etc. At one point we had to cancel our drinks order as it was really taking too long to be brough out. Food: Although I didn’t order much, the 2 desserts I got was decent. There’s not much to go about it as I felt it was honestly neither good nor bad. Price: Reasonably priced, so again not too much to say about here. Conclusion: Although my experience this time wasn’t too great, but like I said there were other things that I would be interested in. I could see that other food and drinks items also had potential so if you were able to sample more it might turn out a lot better. And honestly who is to say that with less of a crowd your experience might be totally different? So if you are around do give it a try at least.

Very aesthetic, simply impressive and outstanding. 10/10 for the food and ambience BUT NOT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE. The lady that served me is pretty rude. That's it. The café itself is very spacious since it extended to the back. Family and kids friendly. You can play games inside like uno and that stacking blocks one. The chocolate mint and tiramisu is, well, no comments. *Chef kiss*

Great place for cake and alcohol. Love this restaurant. China House is a traditional compound of 3 heritage buildings, inside got cafes, restaurants, galleries, library, live music, bakery, small pool and...... Tiramisu cake here are recommended. If you are good in art then you can start to draw your art on that white paper (good ideas to keep kids busy for a while).

We are very enthusiastic about the styling of this place and the ability to explore the different spaces within this building. It is such a great alternative and creative atmosphere. You, as guest, are also stimulated to be creative by being able to draw on a blanc paper that lays on your table. We tried the yogurt granola bowl and came back for to try the tiramisu and the salted caramel cheesecake. We liked both of them. The service was nice. The place is a bit more expensive we paid around 90-100 RM for breakfast including drinks. The only thing we did not enjoyed was the smell of the dogs in the garden. They pied in the garden while we were eating our cakes, which made it feel less hygiene. Also, we felt like we were bitten by some insects, so we moved to a table inside of the restaurant. All in all, we would recommend to check this place out.

I went at 5pm and it was pretty busy. The wait time was short which was good. I found that China House had a large selection of cakes, all of which were delicious. The price was reasonable for the portions. I did find that the drinks were a little pricey. A can of coke was 8 RM which I found slightly outrageous. I had ordered the crushed mint and lime soda but it was completely flat and fizzles. There was also undissolved sugar granules at the bottom of my drink. I did find that the over all experience was good at China House and I would go back but only for special occasions.

Nov 2021 Sop was followed. Dinner choice we had was great. Laksa with Grill Chicken. Laksa flavour is fabulous, good to drink too. Chicken flavour is great and tender. Beef Rendang. Meat is tender and not overly spicy. The service is reasonable. The choice of cake from the Bakery section is amazing. Many pax in for dessert stop and take away. The shop has different section which worth to check it out.

Enjoyed the food, drinks, and cakes here. The signature burger is great, patty is super juicy and tender, burger includes pineapple slices which give a slight sweetness to the burger, elevating the overall taste. Drinks taste great too, and there's a wide selection of cakes and desserts. A great place to chill and meet friends.

Very nice place that offers brunch/mains options and a large selection of cakes. Great service and friendly employees. Every table is covered in a big paper sheet and has crayons on it and guests are encouraged to draw on it and submit their work for the „Doodle of the week“ prize. There is a gallery of past winners on the upper floor which for me was a highlight of the place, because what people had come up with is really amazing! There’s a nice souvenir shop upstairs, too.

ChinaHouse is the local gem of a cultural hub that offers a delightful fusion of sweet treats, an art gallery, an exhibition area, a whiskey & wine bar, a mini library and a retail space for local handmade items. The Kahlua infused tiramisu cake is something to die for and it came in generous portion too! Overall it’s great place to chill, chat and immerse yourself in the rich local culture.

Its my 3rd visit there today. It was less crowded than usual weekend which was nice as there were a lot of tables. I waited for sometimes to be served though as my table was secluded till I had to get up and go look for a waiter. Last time I had the cheesecake which was divine and this time the tiramisu cake was ok as in nice. One of the waitress was quite knowledgable with the drinks. Will come again.

Worth to come for the insta shots. Sometimes there are queue. They serve desserts and also main course. The front and back of the restaurant have different designs and theme. Board games are available for free to be use there. Drinks are average but since we had only tried the cakes, the Dark Dreamy Chocolate is worth a try and Poppyseed and hazelnut raspberry mascarpone is recommended if you like some sourish taste.

Seriously love the environment yet the foods slightly pricey. The best part of this cafe, meanwhile waiting for the orders we can draw on drawing paper.

Soooo many variant of pastry that make me wanna try it all! Cakes, scones, pies, you name it! What a shame that i can only tried 2 kind of cakes. I forgot what i ordered but can only remember tiramisu and something chocolaty cake. I also ordered chicken schnitzel sandwich.

Went there to take away some cake for my wife. Use to take their Tiramisu with Alcoholic, but this round took the one without alcohol, end up equally good. And the staff which not so friendly recommend us the Chocolate Decadence cake. It is good too. Hope the next time when I come back, she will be feeling happy and put on her smile.

A yes place to hangout and to have some nice cakes and pastries. Food wise it's above average. Has minimal choices of beers. Great place to take that insta shot.

⚠️ (Pork-Free) . . Visit Period: Dec 2020 . . Well, sorry but this was another #Throwback to when we were able to travel interstate. Jumped on the chance and headed back to the hometown. In Penang, this place is a staple. It's a must visit for people visiting Penang. . The have the longest shop house cafe in town, with a dozen different cake varieties for you to try, 2 bars, see some art works, draw some art works and a garden to chill. I mean, why not? 🤗 everyone loves some good cakes and some alcohol once in awhile. . Now this visit wasn't during the night, but we chance upon the morning crowd. Haven't been there during the day, we went to have brunch/breakfast as early 9am. Had myself a yummy granola bowl and a big breakfast for the partner. Of course, coffee and iced choco to blend everything up. 🤪 . If you're planning to visit, plan your time or just use your time to queue. 🤣

Went there on 31.10.2021 for the first time to grab some cakes, ended up bringing home 6 slices of cakes. Variety of cakes to choose from, worth the value for the price paid as the cakes were delicious, rich in flavour, big portions & we loved the friendly service given by the lady waitress who served us. Will for sure come back another time

Amazing selection of cakes (non alcoholic and alcoholic). Do try out their wide variety of teas kombuchas! Cool interior. Best to make reservations to avoid queue.

Step in and you're instantly transported into a world of its own. A world filled with old furniture, fixtures, fittings and decor. And the shop is 400ft long from the bakery cafe start point to the Canteen bar out back. Their cakes are to die for. They have so many varieties. Pastries too. Their service is topnotch and for a place with so many tables encompassing the 400ft length of its establishment, you don't need to wait long to be served. There's even a little open-air garden area if you walk in deep enough. Photo opportunities? Plentiful. Almost every nook and cranny is a possible set for your memories. They serve food, alcohol and once the Covid restrictions are eased, they will have live entertainment too. Good music, delightful cakes, gin tonics and wine, what else do you need? This is run by 2 ladies, one from the UK and the other an Australian, both of whom have been in Malaysia for decades. I will definitely make this place a staple everytime I come to Penang. Beautiful!

Art, local crafts, wine bar, cafe, restaurant and most importantly, dessert (cake) Mecca!!! The pesto pasta we had here was unique and divine. The cake we had was amazing and unlike anything we’ve ever had before. They bake 50 cakes a day, need we say more? We came here twice on a three day trip to George Town, it’s that good!!

  • 4/5 Lau K. 2 years ago on Google
Ordered a few cakes and I liked all of them. The best seller tiramisu was really good! A plethora of choices, so many that I couldn’t decide which I wanted. One must also really explore the whole stretch of shoplots. Staffs were quite friendly except for the short-haired staff serving behind the cake bar, TERRIBLY RUDE. Luckily my day was saved by good quality cakes.

Feel so impressed by the environment in the cafe, different seats with different theme. But you still can enjoy the food and drinks there. Tried their cakes and latte. Cakes taste good but might need some improvements on the latter or coffee related drinks. If you visit to Penang, pay it a visit and worth of it.

oh what a wonderful treat! we had cakes and cocktails here and loved the fantastic selection of delicious cakes. Our favorite was the Christmas tree cake, which was made from coconut flakes and cranberries mmmh! and our waitress was super kind, thanks for the nice evening!

It is literally one of the best cheesecakes in my life - I had the caramel cashew one, it was massive but delicious. It is expensive comparing to other places in Malaysia, but it is pretty sizeable and delicious, so 21.9 MYR for that huge slice seems reasonable. The place also has a great atmosphere definitely worth a visit;)

Quaint little restaurant with lots to offer. Environment is decoration to an old tea house, people bustling in and out. Restaurant is quite narrow till it widens at the rear. They have live music on certain days too!. The food was great. Had the burger and the schnitzel sandwich Tried a sarawakian tuak for the first time too. Bunch of really rich mouth watering cakes in very generous portions, best to share them. And a wide variety drinks, alcoholic and otherwise, to try !

Is the only few late night hanging out cafe available in Georgetown especially a less alcohol oriented environment. The stylish China house offers few dinning experience from living band to out door garden space, fine dining corners, corridor cafe and cakes counters. Wine bar etc. Just a extremely happening Hub with most beautiful you and i would enjoy. Check the space out and hope you will like it too. Very artful...

Incredible cafe! We had a wonderful avocado salad, plus their signature tiramisu (from one of the best cake selections I’ve ever seen!) Certainly on the expensive side, but both were lovely and the amazing building made it a real experience! Take time to explore after your meal!

  • 4/5 CS L. 1 year ago on Google
Cakes were good. You may want to share as the tiramisu cake was a large portion. Place is nicely done up and cozy - very comfortable and relaxing. Service can be improved. My drink came after I have eaten my cake. Staff seems busy doing their own think to notice customers waiting. A little pricey.

Visited for the live band on a Friday night - the keyboardist plays the pipe organ at church - funny seeing him here with a band half his age. Lol. Good fun and talented bunch! Ordered cake from one end and walked them over to the other, a distance of 100metres through a courtyard, art gallery, bakery and restaurant. Great place for a more progressive, yippie, fun-loving crowd.

We came here specially for their cakes after our dinner. They have plenty of choices of cakes, coffee, tea, and other drinks. We have had the carrot cake, the walnut rum cake, and the tiramisu cake. All were nice and not dry as I like moist cakes. Their latte was nice, too.

👍 Queue seemed quite long when we arrived around 2.30 pm but we only waited about 20 minutes. I think they should have more signage to tell customers what to do so the process can be easier. There was only one waiter upstairs in the seating area so it was quite difficult to get his attention. Food is...
