BaBa Phang

Restaurant Nyonya restaurant

👍👍 BaBa Phang probably the best Nyonya food in Penang. Every dishes we ordered were authentic Nyonya flavor and fabulous food. I'm sure the dinner crowd can be very packed but lunch time is more flexible. I would like to see the decor of the restaurant more vibrant. Current decor is very dull and borin... People often mention dishes, good, Nyonya, restaurant, fish, Penang, reasonable, authentic, peranakan, recommended,

Great seeing all the Baba and Nyonya famous dishes are available in this restaurant. The restaurant is packed and the staffs are extremely busy but also helpful. Maybe with extra 1 or 2 staffs may help enhanced the dine in experience. The dishes are good and yummy, fish curry always yummy. So worth the visit and the wait.

Love this place. It has all the great nyonya dishes (like pork belly cincalok) that some places dont. They have a very authetic, intense flavor that isnt watered down. If u like Nyonya Breeze this is almost if not as good as it.

Lovely local Nyonya restaurant .. very frequent by local meant authentic! The Tau ewe bak or soya braised pork belly that you shouldn’t miss for sure…a little dry style cooking with thick coat of sauce ! The meat was so tender and really well done ! The curry chicken another one that you should try.. rich flavour with lots of spices added! very flavourful with lots of spices added! The asam prawn perfectly cooked with right balance of sweetness and sourness! The kerabu kacang rather unique and served like a salad ! The fried wonton was rather appetising and the dessert : pulut hitam and the local Bobo Cha Cha were must to order.. very rich in coconut flavour that squeezed it fresh!

I ws quite skeptical about having peranakan food again because the last time I hd in other state was a bit disappointing and so overly rated. This time, our host in Penang who are familiar with peranakan dishes brought us to dine here. We were thrilled and glad that this place, my friends, indeed serves good authentic peranakan cuisine. We kept praising the excellent taste of each dishes. If you are visiting Penang and looking for good peranakan food, I highly recommend you this place. Note that this is a non halal restaurant. Well lit, clean space. Limited parking space.

We went at 13:30 on a Sunday and just snagged the last inside table before everyone else was turned away without reservations or asked to sit outside so be wary that this is a popular spot. Definitely one of our more expensive meals in Malaysia though Penang seems to be more expensive than the mainland. The braised pork is super delicious. Steamed fish was soft and the meat just melted. Only downfall for me was the lemongrass drink which literally tasted like perfume water, the ginger drink was much better. Should you come here? Yes if you want a restaurant over street food stall vibes with good food and be willing to spend more than the street food stalls too as a small steamed fish is RM50!

The food, ambience, cleanliness, service, pricing are good! Ordered their popular dishes (fish, colourful rice, sweet potato leaves and pork). Awesome! Highly recommend BaBa Phang👍

Flavorful Nyonya dishes without overpowering spiciness. Visually appealing and tastes good. Kapitan chicken comes in the tastiest curried gravy and the fish is fresh.

Authentic and super tasty dishes. Asam pedaa fish was a winner, Inchi Kebin is the best I've had. Otak Otak surprising creamy. Petai and daun uji are must tries too.

One of the best Nyonya food I have ever tasted. The salted fish curry and the sambal petai was truly brilliant. The only downside is the lack of choice for dessert. Nevertheless will come again.

Delighted to stumble upon this hidden jewel. The must-try I would recommend is Otak-otak, tu dor th'ng, inchi kabin, nasi ulam. Everything else was delicious here - Preserved Vege taufu, Perut ikan, curry kapitan, lor bak, acar, etc. Nutmeg juice is good too. Place is comfy but does not house many tables, would be better to come early. Highly recommended!

There are lots of Nyonya Cuisine in Penang. Baba Phang was recommended by a friend and it's true that the food is quite delicious and authentic. Located in Sri Bahari road where parkinh is limited. Suggest to make Reservation beforehand. The price is reasonable. The rice was fluffy. The sambal petai, spring roll, kerabu botol was so good and well seasoned.. The dessert pulut hitam was so good!!! Overall is good but slightly need improvement in service. The waiter is quite rough when serving the meal, making big sound when putting the plate on table.

Tried a few dishes and personally like the chincalok pork, lor bak and the nonya fish. Some dishes should go easy on the salt and sugar. Very friendly service.

We went to this place without reservation and they took our name and said to come back about 30 mins. When we came back, there was a reserved table by the window and we ordered 5 dishes. I already like Nyonya food but this place made my affection for Nyonya food even more. Of all the 5 dishes I only had 2 of them before. Both were done even better and the other three didn’t disappoint. Come here for a very affordable yet excellent meal. Highly recommended.

Randomly found this restaurant and decided to try with my family members. Called up for reservation and they just told me we could just walk in. Today is Friday night just for your info. They have parking space right outside the shop but as there are a few more restaurants nearby the parking are not enough. You could try to wait for a while to see there any car coming out or u could just drive further down to the car park space at ur left hand side. RM3 per entry. They have varieties of choices on their menu and do take note that they serve in a very small portion for nyonya food and just order as many dishes as u could if u r a big eater. The price are reasonable and they have quite big tables available for 7-8 person. Their sambal is so nice. Highly recommended if u a big fan of stinky beans. They are superb to be stir fried with their balacan. Perut ikan (fish stomach) I personally felt it’s too sour don’t quite like it so much. We will go back for more dishes next time. If they have soursop available please try tat. U would love it.

BaBa Phang serves one of the best Peranakan dishes around Penang. From pulut ikan to pig stomach soup, from enche kabin to tau eu bak and pai tee, one has lots of selection of Nyonya cuisine to choose from, topping up with blue peony rice and nasi ulam. Dessert wise their bee ko moey and sago gula melaka are to crave for.

The food is fantastic! And the price is very reasonable too! There’s a total of 5A4C and we spent about 326rm on the whole meal, which is very reasonable for the quantity of food ordered. I love the rice especially, so fresh and full of flavour! The fried chicken was a surprise, as it looked dry from the outside, yet so tender and juicy when we bite into it. The salted fish curry is soooo goood. Recommended dish to try! Otah otah is ok, a little on the salty side, but great with rice. Overall, worth a visit if you are nearby!

The absolutely most delicious Nyonya cuisine I have tasted . The Kerabu was refreshing n full of flavours ! We love everything we order . Really enjoyed the meal . Each dish was perfectly executed. . Highly recommended. The other favourite was petit ikan n tau tu bak . Only thing is portions are quite small so can be expensive. But worth it .

I agreed that this was one of the good Nyonya food with reasonable prices. But it was marred by the lady staff who mistakenly took our query on a dish which had not been served as an additional order. When the food was served twice, we told them that we didn’t order additional dish. The staff put up an angry face and insisted that we made the order and then telling loudly to another staff. This was not professional in treating your customers. Please educate your staff about customers services. The atmosphere in the restaurant was so noisy that we can barely enjoy our meal. No doubt the food was good, I don’t think that we will come back again.

Pleasantly surprised by the food here. The Nyonya/Peranakan dishes were flavorful and well-balanced (vs. the stronger flavors from Southern parts of Peninsula, could be too jelak sometimes), with a good mix of spices and citrus. We paid above 200 MYR for 5 people, which was reasonable. The staff could be more friendly enough, they didn't seem very enthusiastic about their jobs. They could have used a smile or two. The toilet was clean, which is always a plus. Overall, I would come back again for the food.

IMO... i prefer the more authentic Melaka peranakan food Perhaps Penang style is different from Melaka anyway the food is still enjoyable👍

First time eating at this restaurant, the restaurant is always crowd, need reservation in advance. The foods taste good and the serving of food is fast. Recommended to give it a try, will not regard.

Yummy nyonya food! Visited with extended family and we enjoyed all the dishes ordered. Everything was flavorful, tasty and reasonably priced. We were also served small plate of kueh at the start and noticed we weren’t charged for it too, great service! Recommend!

Love their sambal petai, perut ikan, nasi ulam and kerabu kacang botol. The sambal they provided tastes exactly like my mother's home made one. Good authenticity in the food. They are a bit heavy handed on the sweetness. Only thing preventing a perfect 5 stars.

Very good Malay-Chinese food, would visit again next time. Food is not your typical foods and meals you find out at hawker stores. The dishes are a fushion of Chinese-Malaysian dishes that is "unique" and the taste and experience is nice and pleasant. Anyone coming to Penang should pay a visit, advance booking is essential as it can be busy and booked out if you come in big groups.

Unexpected find in Jalan Sri Bahari ! So glad we stopped by to have the peranakan food here! Braised Pork with Soy Sauce and Prawn Nyonya Curry were amazing! Portion is decent and good and quick service! Must try!

Great selection of authentic Nyonya Peranakan food! Including traditional yet rarer ones that is not available usually like Daun Ubi Masak Titik (Sweet Potato Leaf Cream Stew), Cincalok Pork Belly, Kerabu Kacang Botol, Perut Ikan. Not intense enough, not too overpowering spicy but still tasty for local Penangites, taste is above average but not the most excellent. Deserve 5 stars. 味道很平衡. RM130 for 4 person, very worth it with the portion, average price (RM32.70). We had 4 dishes with soup and drinks. Would revisit again. My favorite from this visit is Tu Kar Chor and Perut Ikan! Best value Nyonya restaurant in Penang with the quality served.

This place was recommended by my aunty for a nice Nyonya dinner. Yes it was really good. Service is fast and food really delish. Would come back here for sure. Forgot to take food pics as as it came we just dug in without thinking about anything else 🤣 Staff friendly and kind. Certainly a popular place, therefore book before coming !

My fav nyonya restaurant! Foods are delicious, boss is friendly, price is reasonable, restaurant is clean and cozy. I do not know what else to expect. Highly recommended for foodies.

This was an awesome awesome food experience. I cannot say enough about how authentic the food was. Portions was good and price reasonable. Must try are the Salted Fish Curry, Vinegar Pork Trotters and Petai dishes. Oh wait the Asam Prawns and Nasi Ulam were to die for!!! Overall very very good. I'm coming back and certainly recommending to friends :-)

Read the reviews and they were good. Decided to try. Bought nasi ulam. It was very dry, rice was a tad too hard and didn't see any dried shrimp or salted fish, though there was some fishy smell, neither the smell of udangkering nor salted fish. . The asam pedas ikan pari and tau yu bak were okay only. Tasted better ones.

This is becoming one of my favourite nyonya food places in Penang! Had dinner here with my family and managed to try a good number of dishes. Everything was very tasty! However, like most nyonya food places, it is quite pricey! The staff was attentive and service was good. Particularly good dishes are: nasi ulam and inchi kabin (chicken)

  • 5/5 michel l. 2 years ago on Google
Our group went there for dinner and everyone was enthusiastic after tasting not less than 12 dishes. You want to discover Baba Nyonya cuisine, just go there with a solid appetite. Staff will be also happy to guide you. Only one light critic not affecting the above: reduce the salt.

😠 I reached at around 2:30pm and still need to queue till 3:00 pm. Disappointed with the food because the deep fried fish roe and fish are hard rather than crispy. The gravy is also so so only.

👍 Queue seemed quite long when we arrived around 2.30 pm but we only waited about 20 minutes. I think they should have more signage to tell customers what to do so the process can be easier. There was only one waiter upstairs in the seating area so it was quite difficult to get his attention. Food is...
