First time here today, Monday about 4 p.m. $2 PBR... that's dirt cheap for this neighborhood. My 5-star review goes down to 4 because of the bartender, who didn't bother to say "thank you" when I paid out, and who also didn't provide a customer copy of my credit card receipt. I hope that doesn't mean they're going to try and rip me off on the tip---being a bartender myself, I tipped 50%.

Extraordinary!! Best place in Montrose. Mixed crowd, students, artists, writers, eccentrics! Best owner, bartenders in town. Dog friendly. Great for watching sports. Coffee truck on site. Taco truck across the street. You need to experience this ice house at least once. FRIENDLY! I have 32 years experience indulging in ice cold beer on site.

Good vibe kind of place. Open to the outdoors and relaxed. Met a date here and then walked down to a museum close by.

Super casual place for beers, watching sports on TV and meeting friends. Dogs are allowed on the large, shaded patio. This place has been here forever and is the definition of a Texas ice house. Highly recommend!

Tried this place because it was near an AirBnB some friends from out of town rented. 3 dads with 2 20 year old sons with us. First wouldn’t allow us to buy them a beer (even if TABC allows it with a parent), local establishment rule. Cool, no problem, ordered them a water. Then 10 min later informed us that they can’t even be on the patio after 9pm because they are minors (also not a TABC rule). Beyond irritating, forced to leave because our two 20 year olds were drinking water past 9pm. The “boss man” who was calling the shots didn’t even have the balls to come tell us himself. Sent the bartender who was nice but clearly was forced to do what the “boss man” said. Stay away!

Nice outdoor area for beers and casual drinks. Nothing fancy but cool outdoor area with fans and misters. Drinks are well priced!

Popped in on Sunday evening 11/26. I sat at the bar for 10 minutes and the bartender on that shift (female) was too busy talking to her co-worker and watching the TV screen. She did not even turn her head and acknowledge her bar or me. I walked out! Will never come back!!!

Alabama ice house was a favorite haunt of ours when we first moved to houston 12 years ago. A cold beer and a toco from the truck across the street. It had been six months, maybe a year since I last visited. However, tonight, on the way home with an expensive restaurant with overpriced half bottle of wine in a sealed bag, we walked past AIH and noticed the new “Renovations”, and decided to pass through, and perhaps get a beer. I walked in past the bar, and the first words out of the bar tenders mouth was “you can’t bring that here”. How they even saw the bag with the wine was beyond me. My immediate response was, “ not to worry, I will never darken your doorstep again”. And with that, I didn’t even break pace as we exited the nearest exit. It was a Sunday night and the place was so empty and devoid of the character we had come to expect. It was heart breaking to see such an institution in such “lack of fun”

The Alabama ice House, already a long time tradition in Houston has upgraded and put more shade up and fans and even though it was 90°, it was nice and cool watching my buddy Hollywood Larry Purcell and listening to him play country music. I always enjoy going there. And they consistently have some of the loveliest bar maids of anywhere in town...

Visited on 6.3, Thoughtful/ helpful bartender. Most days that I’ve visited they have at least one of the coffee porters I like and great spot for casually watching a game. Taco truck outside is one of the best in Houston.

I’ve been holding off on this review for a long time. I have been coming to West-Al for 5-years now, on and off. This establishment has often served as my second home. The service is fantastic, the selection is diverse and there’s world class tacos right across the street. What more could you ask for? Exceptional service and staff. Everyone should visit at least once!

Great little place to hang out. Wide selection of beers and ciders. No food, but little taco truck across the street, also is very good.

Beer place beloved by houstonians. It has a wide selection of beers and no liquor. Only 2 options of alcoholic beverages that are not beers. I would recommend to beer lover; cocktail connoisseurs please skip this place .

Love this place...great dive bar to visit with friends and family. Beer is cheap and they have cornhole, ping pong, and pool. You really can't go wrong here unless you want something other than beer and wine!

This place is a gem, super laid back and unpretentious. Be sure to also grab some tacos from the truck across the street

The Alabama Ice House is our fabulous best place to go to. We are family there, all the bartenders are awesome, the people are friendly the dogs are great and you just can't have a better atmosphere than the Alabama ice house. We moved back to League City and still go to Houston just to go to the Ice house. You can't beat Tasia,Kali, Ellie, Ali Pete. The the best bar in houston!

My Fiancé and I hosted our Engagement Party at The West Alabama Ice House this past weekend and everything was perfect. The staff were over the top accommodating and helpful and everyone had a blast. I couldn't recommend this spot more for hosting a casual fun outdoor event!

Chill spot to hide out from the sun and enjoy a wide selection of beer/cider. Make sure to get some tacos (cash only) from the truck across the street! We had al pastor and barbacoa and both were delicious.

Great place to sit a chat and have a beer with friends while eating a taco from across the street.

Chill spot and all beer in cans, no beer on draft which sucks but it’s ok. Just was next to a sketchy gas station

Hot and fun. It's climate controlled - all open air. Very chill kind of place. And icon in the old upper Kirby neighborhood. Great place to just hang out and have a beer

  • 4/5 Whitney G. 2 years ago on Google
Love the outdoor seating and that they have a wide variety of ciders and canned beers. A taco truck is right across street from it too. The perfect combination!

Great "dive" bar with a no frills atmosphere, that actually has a few frills. A bunch of TV's to watch sports, plenty of space to spread out and hang with your group, a pool table, and a space for Cornhole and a couple of other bar games. They also have a fire pit. And best of all, a great beer selection that hits all the genres. And if there isn't a game on their music playlist hits more than enough hits that'll have you humming along to something. Would be five stars if they had some bites or some liquor, but don't get me wrong they are in my bar rotation now.

We were there for a cook-off to benefit Make-A-Wish foundation. Hadn't been there in 20 years and it was still a very cool place. Great food. Congratulations to Emily's Cookers for winning 2 categories! Thanks Baked Bakes for the free cookies! 🍪

Most attentive bartenders in Houston; and there is a permanent taco truck across the street.
