We booked a double private room. The staff was very polite and willing to help us, we really appreciated that! However, the communication was a bit difficult because they do not speak English. The rooms where just OK for a hostel, but there is definitely tremendous room for improvement: 1. The room had no internal bathroom. That is OK, we were aware of it. However, there was only a single common bathroom and shower for all of the rooms. The common bathroom was very unclean and had a low ceiling. It was maximum 1.80m high. That made it very difficult to use. Moreover the bathroom place accommodated the shower, the toilet, the sink and a drying rack! Not a good idea. Definitely they need to find a way to fix this. 2. The overall cleanliness of the place was not that good. The corridors and the stairs were full of dust and there were many random things around the place. They shall improve the cleanliness of the place. 3. The door of the room had only a tiny external lock to lock it. This didn't feel secure, we had to carry our valuables with us. There were no lockers either. They shall put proper locks on the door and lockers, so that the visitors feel safer. 4. There was only one plug in the room, which was occupied by the fan of the room. They shall put multi plug outlets. 5. The kitchen could be also cleaner. Overall: the people where very polite, the place was OK to stay for one night, but they should work on improving the overall feeling of security, cleanliness and the amenities.

Great hostel! We stayed one night and we wished we could have stayed longer. The rooms are good and clean, the hostel is very charming on an old Greek building being refurbished by Husnu and his friends. Great vibes overall and if you are looking to enjoy the nightlife this is the place as it is located nearby bars and clubs. The district is very walkable and has an outdoor market on Sundays with delicious watermelon :)

The hostel has a great location in Izmir and the house has its own beautiful charm. However we regret choosing this place and wouldn’t recommend it to any friend or family. It is a pity that such a nice place which is full of history is not maintened and cleaned normally. Its bathroom and shower are one of the dirtiest and disgusting I have ever seen in an hostel, it even had mold... On both days we woke up with a sewage smell in the whole house. Moreover the electric socket in our bedroom was literally coming out of the wall, which is a huge electrocution and fire hazard for us (the hosts didn’t seem to care about it when we told them). We also felt weird because most of the workers at Vakana house were teenagers or children... More details about the bathroom : There was mold in the sink and shower, the (only) toilet seat was broken and never been cleaned during our stay, and the shower didn’t have any wall or curtain meaning the whole bathroom was super wet everytime someone took a shower. The bathroom’s roof was very low meaning anyone taller than 1m70 cannot stand up normally there. There were no towels, but with all the rest this almost seemed like a detail. Moreover, there was no climatisation system in the room (but only a simple fan) whereas they advertised it in the AirBNB ad. The window couldn’t be closed at all, meaning we couldn’t attempt to protect ourselves from mosquitoes or from the very loud cafe that was just downstairs outside.

Very cool place to stay. I was unsure on what to expect after reading some of the negative comments, but honestly I don't see many reasons to complain. The owners are kind people and the hostel is a historical building. The rooms have big toilets and are cleaned daily.

Nice hostel with a great host(Ale). Got a good wifi, a kitchen and 2 terraces. The bathroom could be a little bit bigger but for the price, it is a great deal. Close to a lot of bar and restaurant and to the metro (who go to the airport and Ephesus(with a transfert)). We came as guest but left as friends. I really recommend to stay here.
