Swet Bhairav Temple is located at Kathmandu Durbar Square. Swet Bhairav, literally meaning ‘the White Bhairav’ is the biggest face idol of Bhairav in the world. Shweta Bhairav’s real name is 'Sarabh Mukh'. ‘At one time Sarabh is considered the ferocious beast of the universe. Although the huge face of Shweta Bhairav is at Hanuman Dhoka, the full body is in the Pachali temple premises of Teku. The face idol has a huge face is about 15 feet in size. The small idol on the head of this idol is considered to be Brahma. The moon and sun are also at the top of this idol. This gold-plated idol is called Shweta Bhairav based on its original white color. It was initially built during the Lichhavi period and later again it was re-established by King Rana Bahadur Shah in 1795 AD. The temple architecture is simple. The massive face of Swet Bhairav is housed Inside the nine ota tiki jhya (a window with small wooden holes). The general public can observe him during 3 festivals Indrajatra, Chaite Dashain & Bada Dashain. As per legend, once Ran Bahadur Shah had torn down the idols to verify power possessed by the gods and goddesses of the valley. When he hit white idol of Shweta Bhairav, he fainted immediately. This incident led to the King Ran Bahadur to understand the power of gods and goddesses. After realizing that there was divine power in Shweta Bhairav, he worshiped and re-establishment this Shweta Bhairav. It is believed that after demolishing the stone statue of Swet Bhairab, the then king Ran Bahadur saw only Bhairab in a dream and restored the statue of Bhairav hiding it inside the wooden window, so that he would not have to dream again. Since it was reestablished by Ran Bahadur Shah in Bhadra of 1852 AD during the period of Indrajatra, from that time it also became part of Indrajatra. There is a belief that if you see Bhairav's huge face, you will not be afflicted with any major disease. As per another belief at that time, there was fear of ghosts in Kathmandu. It is believed that after the establishment of Bhairav, they fled in fear. The main festival here is Chaitra Dasami (Navratra).

Swet Bhairav, an aspect of Lord Bhairav in Hindu mythology, embodies immense power and ferocity. Depicted as a divine form donning a white hue, Swet Bhairav symbolizes purity and fearlessness. The term "Bhairav" originates from the word "Bhairava," denoting the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Adorned with various symbolic elements like a trident, skull cup, snake, and a drum, Swet Bhairav signifies the destruction of negativity, protection, and the enforcement of cosmic order. Devotees often seek blessings from Swet Bhairav to overcome obstacles, ward off evil forces, and gain courage. Legend speaks of Swet Bhairav's incredible might, his ability to annihilate darkness, and bestow blessings upon his devotees.
