Along with the prolific architecture of Wooden carvings this place is having a lot of temples and areas of shopping. A beautiful place to spend evening and mornings. A must visit place.

Such an architectural marvel. This ancient structure has been around for hundreds of years and was used as residential palace as well as place of worship. Numerous different statues, stupas and shrines can be found here with a lot of spots to take nice pictures 😉🖼️

Beautiful architecture and vast area! Lots of walk with great views. Only negative is that the police with harass you and make sure you have a ticket. I wasn’t even in the complex and they came straight up to me for a ticket.

Nice square with a lot historical buildings, temples, shops and restaurants. It's an old square where a lot of historical events took place. There is supposed to be 50 temples in this place, though some of them are very old and not maintained well. Nice place to spend time.

A good place to shop jewelry. I found one aunty's collection really unique and bought some jewelry from her. You need to bargain here as the things initially might seem a bit expensive. There are a lot of good cafés here also. This market also has beautiful traditional structures and temples.

Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar and Hanuman Dhoka, is an old durbar square in Kathmandu's city . It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the heart of old Kathmandu city, Basantapur never fails to impress first time visitors with its intricate wood carvings and rich history with the highest concentration of old structures, the square is home to several palaces, courtyards, and temples. It is also known as "the Museum of Temples" because there are over 50 temples in the square. Handicraft shops may be found in the courtyards around Gaddi Baithak, where you can see a variety of attractive purchasable handicrafts. The Durbar is divided into two courtyards, the outer Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar, and Shiva-Parvati Temple, and the inner section consisting of Hanuman Dhoka and the main palace. Some floors have been converted to museums dedicated to three generations of Shah kings of Nepal. Most parts of the palace premises are open to tourists throughout the week. It was very nice and informative place. Here we can see the oldest architectural design. Without any machinery they build so many high rise buildings and they're still very strong. It's a very nice tourists spot. Kids and students can visit here and they can learn more about past.❤️🙏

Must see place in Kathmandu. Old temple, very good architecture. This city is very old. Buildings are very old and narrow, so 4 wheelers will not go. Park your vehicle in the hotel and go by walk or taxi.

Must see place in Nepal! So inspiring, authentic and special. There's a small fee for foreigners and you have to have some cash with you. The ticket includes all the museums, so don't miss them - they are pretty hard to find in the chaos and crowd, just make sure you explore every corner of the area ;) There are some guides who offer you tours but they never insist if you politely say no. Don't forget your camera and enjoy!

A bustling & touristy marketplace. There are other Durbar Squares too in Kathmandu itself. This is not the biggest one. But, do visit the square. The temples, buildings & architecture are a nice visual treat. You can shop a few souvenirs and explore the shops here and sit & rest after climbing the giant steps of these temples.

The ultimate street photographer’s paradise, bar none. The dull and senile streets of New York would not even hold a candle to this sprightly, tumultuous place at the center of Kathmandu. Beautiful, unique, mysterious, enigmatic, inspiring, but mostly chaotic: these words sum-up my description of the entire Kathmandu Durbar Square. Dare I say that you will not find any place in the world like this place, from its delicately detailed wood carved windows, to the palatial grandeur of the temples like the Taleju temple, and to the chaotic street scenes of the city center. My advise to first time solo tourists like me is to hire a private tour guide. The tour guides will approach you upon entry or payment of the tourist fee, and just haggle with their fees. Why? Without my tour guide, I wouldn’t be able to properly learn the history and the background of the structures inside and within the square – I will just be walking nonchalantly without any clue or knowledge whatsoever of why these historical buildings are built in the first place. And one great thing about this UNESCO Heritage Site is that it is located smack in the middle of the city center of Kathmandu, just walking distance from Thamel or the tourist hotspot. Which means there are many restaurant or café options that you can visit while you are touring this magnificent place of Kathmandu.

One of the main squares in Kathmandu, very historical and great vibes overall. The entrance fee was 1000 NPR (steep for Nepal) and it gets you access to some buildings which they wouldn't let you in otherwise. You need to bargain hard with the street vendors.

This place speaks a lot about the culture and heritage of the country. It's basically a complex comprising of temples, shopping stores, eateries etc. I highly feel that this place needs a lot of maintenance. Hope the govt. does that as it's a touristic place and more importantly it's a place of the national importance.

Come after 7 pm it's free (no entrance fee) . Very interesting experience. So many temples. Some standing strong after the 2015 earthquake, but some held up by wooden beams. The intricate details around the structures are amazing! It is quite spread out which i found was good. Lots of sellers, taxis, rickshaws etc.

My tour guide Krishna ram Pradhan is the best he is very friendly and caring he took pictures of me many times . He explained everything to me. I really enjoyed the tour. The place is amazing and you must visit it when you’re in Kathmandu. It’s full of history and culture. Make sure to come in the morning to enjoy the view. It took us almost 3 hours to see everything in the square. After that we went to lunch in a good restaurant with amazing view. We tried their traditional food. To book the guide just ask when you book the ticket. He is certified by the government. Don’t took anyone from the street. The experience is better with Krishna. He helped me to stamp my ticket for another day so I don’t pay twice . Thanks

It is the heart of the city, middle of the hustle and bustle, when you want to find the some peaceful place after a rough day, head in to here, so you can enjoy with some friends for some refreshment. Doesn't have to be some cafe or pubs, you can just sit under the temples and monuments or inside a wide arena this square has to offer. Some local vendors might offer u to sip tea, or coffee or some snacks while you enjoy the view . Famous renowned name is "Basantapur" Location: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Basantapur Parking: Not available inside the premises, you can park over the streets with parking charges. Recommended: Yes Availability: Food stalls, small shop vendors, restaurants , street vendors

Durbar Square is the most popular landmark in Kathmandu. It is right in the center of city. It has several temples and buildings which are several hundred years old. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal has damaged several buildings which are being rebuilt slowly. I think they should have a protective boundary around the whole complex, otherwise lot of people, dogs and bikes are going everywhere in this beautiful area.

The museum you need to buy at the entrance of the square and there are washrooms and a charging point in the museum. There are many cafeterias near an open market. gnificance for the people of Nepal. Known for its rich culture and arts, Basantapur is the hub for tourists and visitors. Prarthana Dixit takes you on a stroll around this mystical part of the city. Visit Basantapur Durbar Square Basantapur Durbar Square is the heart and soul of Basantapur. It is one of the three Durbar Squares situated in the Kathmandu valley. Enlisted as a UNESCO cultural heritage site, this durbar square has attracted a lot of tourists from across the globe. There are various temples and monuments inside the Durbar Square such as Taleju Temple, (which is only open during Nawami of Vijaya Dashain) the bell, Hanuman Dhoka, Kumari Chowk. Explore in leisure Basantapur is a city of alleys. It is almost like a maze, one that you will struggle to get out of. While you’re there you can spend the day roaming around, discovering new alleyways. Hopefully you will find your way out and with that learn a lot of things about this beautiful city. Delight your taste buds There are plenty of restaurants in Basantapur. From cafes to continental restaurants, this city will not disappoint you when it comes to food or places to dine at. If you want to go on a date with someone or hang out with your friends then head to Himalayan Java, one of the best places to grab coffee at. You can also try Durbar Square Café and Jessy Penny. If you want a taste of Newari cuisine then try out Bhoe Chhen Newari Restaurant and Bar. Street food is also very popular and easily available in Basantapur. Treasure a tattoo If you are a tattoo enthusiast then you must explore the tattoo parlours in the area. One of the city’s most reputed tattoo parlour, Tik’e Jhya is in Basantapur itself. Besides that there are other tattoo studios like Kathmandu Tattoo Inn, Freak Street Tattoo and Swastik Tattoo Studios that has garnered plenty of public attention. Shop with pleasure There are plenty of street stalls in Basantapur. Since Basantapur is rich in culture and history, you could buy souvenirs and handicrafts that reflect the cultural diversity of Nepal. You can also shop for pashminas, thangka paintings and accessories.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is an absolute gem, a must-visit destination that immerses you in the rich history and vibrant culture of Nepal. As soon as you step foot in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you are transported to a bygone era, where the past comes alive in stunning architectural marvels, intricate carvings, and a palpable sense of awe. The square is a living testament to Nepal's ancient dynasties and their architectural prowess. The palaces, temples, and courtyards that adorn the square are a striking blend of Newari, Indian, and Tibetan architectural styles, showcasing the diverse influences that have shaped the country's heritage. Every structure holds a story, and wandering through this open-air museum feels like embarking on a historical treasure hunt. One of the highlights of Kathmandu Durbar Square is the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the former royal residence. Its intricately carved wooden windows, delicate stone sculptures, and ornate courtyards are a visual feast for the eyes. Exploring the palace's rooms and galleries gives you a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of Nepal's royal history. The square is also home to an array of majestic temples, each with its unique charm. The Kumari Ghar, or House of the Living Goddess, is particularly captivating. This sacred abode of the Kumari, a young girl worshipped as a living deity, is adorned with intricate woodwork and adorned windows. Witnessing the Kumari during her occasional appearances is an incredibly spiritual experience. Additionally, the Taleju Temple, Jagannath Temple, and Kasthamandap, the temple from which Kathmandu derived its name, all add to the architectural splendor of the square. The detailed craftsmanship, the elaborate pagoda-style roofs, and the vivid colors used in their construction create a captivating spectacle that leaves you in awe. Beyond the remarkable architecture, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a vibrant hub of local life. As you stroll through the square, you'll encounter artisans, merchants, and sadhus (holy men) going about their daily routines, infusing the place with a lively energy. Exploring the bustling markets surrounding the square allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, where you can find handicrafts, traditional textiles, and delicious local delicacies. Lastly, the panoramic views from the square are simply breathtaking. As the sun sets and casts its warm glow upon the ancient structures, the ambiance becomes even more magical. Be sure to find a quiet spot to sit and soak in the serenity of the surroundings, as the silhouette of the temples against the colorful sky creates an unforgettable vista. In conclusion, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a captivating destination that offers an enchanting journey through history and culture. From the intricate architecture to the vibrant atmosphere, every moment spent here is a testament to the resilience and beauty of Nepal's heritage. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a cultural explorer, or simply seeking a transformative travel experience, a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your soul.

The heart and soul of Kathmandu city, Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the three durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Until very recently, this complex served as the royal courtyard, throne room, coronation hall and still functions as a stage for numerous religious rituals and festivals. One can easily spend 2-3 hours here. We used to walk to Durbar Square from our hotel in Thamel to spend our evenings. There is an array of activities one can explore, such as shopping. From art and crafts to trendy t-shirts and pajamas, this area is a shopping paradise. You can also sip a cup of coffee, tea, or beer and enjoy a meal or snacks in any of the nearby cafes and restaurants. Additionally, you can visit the museum or simply observe the locals and tourists enjoying the festival called life. However, getting souvenirs or collectibles at a reasonable price largely depends on your ability to bargain, though the prices are generally lower compared to Thamel market. Our experiences in cafes and restaurants surrounding the complex were bittersweet.

The harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences creates a unique atmosphere. Despite some wear, it's a mesmerizing journey through time, enriched by vibrant festivals.

Was here in 2012, before the devastating Gorkha earthquake destroyed this beautiful nine storeys palace in 2015. Definitely considered myself lucky for having the chance to appreciate the beautiful cravings and architecture of this 18th century monument of Shah Dynasty. True treasure!!

Basantapur Tower was the tallest tower in Kathmandu Durbar Square once, which is located in the south of the Nasal Chowk in Basantapur. A World Heritage Site, Basantapur Tower has nine floors and overlooks the city through meticulously carved windows. It was built in the 18th century during Shah Dynasty.

The name "Nepal" is first recorded in texts from the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent, the era in ancient Nepal when Hinduism was founded, the predominant religion of the country. In the middle of the first millennium BC, Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini in southern Nepal. Parts of northern Nepal were intertwined with the culture of Tibet. The centrally located Kathmandu Valley is intertwined with the culture of Indo-Aryans, and was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. The Himalayan branch of the ancient Silk Road was dominated by the valley's traders. The cosmopolitan region developed distinct traditional art and architecture. By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom achieved the unification of Nepal. The Shah dynasty established the Kingdom of Nepal and later formed an alliance with the British Empire, under its Rana dynasty of premiers. The country was never colonized but served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India. Parliamentary democracy was introduced in 1951 but was twice suspended by Nepalese monarchs, in 1960 and 2005. The Nepalese Civil War in the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in the establishment of a secular republic in 2008, ending the world's last Hindu monarchy.

Kathmandu Durbar Square (Basantapur Durbar Kshetra) in front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom is one of three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The preference for the construction of royal palaces at this site dates back to as early as the Licchavi period in the third century. Even though the present palaces and temples have undergone repeated and extensive renovations and nothing physical remains from that period. Names like Gunapo and Gupo, which are the names referred to the palaces in the square in early scriptures, imply that the palaces were built by Gunakamadev, a King ruling late in the tenth century. When Kathmandu City became independent under the rule of King Ratna Malla (1484–1520), the palaces in the square became the Royal Palaces for its Malla Kings. When Prithvi Narayan Shah invaded the Kathmandu Valley in 1769, he favored the Kathmandu Durbar Square for his palace. Other subsequent Shah kings continued to rule from the square until 1896 when they moved to the Narayan Hiti Palace. The square is still the center of important royal events like the coronation of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah in 1975 and King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah in2001.Though there are no written archives stating the history of Kathmandu Durbar Square, construction of the palace in the square is credited to Sankharadev (1069–1083). As the first king of the independent Kathmandu City, Ratna Malla is said to have built the Taleju temple in the Northern side of the palace in 1501. For this to be true then the temple would have had to have been built in the vihara style as part of the palace premise surrounding the Mul Chok courtyard for no evidence of a separate structure that would match this temple can be found within the square. The oldest temples in the square are those built by Mahendra Malla (1560–1574). They are the temples of Jagannath, Kotilingeswara Mahadev, Mahendreswara, and the Taleju Temple. This three-roofed Taleju Temple was established in 1564, in a typical Newari architectural style and is elevated on platforms that form a pyramid-like structure. It is said that Mahendra Malla when he was residing in Bhaktapur, was highly devoted to the Taleju Temple there; the Goddess being pleased with his devotion gave him a vision asking him to build a temple for her in the Kathmandu Durbar Square. With a help of a hermit, he designed the temple to give it its present form and the Goddess entered the temple in the form of a bee. His successors Sadasiva (1575–1581), his son, Shiva Simha (1578–1619), and his grandson, Laksmi Narsingha (1619–1641), do not seem to have made any major additions to the square. During this period of three generations, the only constructions to have occurred were the establishment of Degutale Temple dedicated to Goddess Mother Taleju by Shiva Simha and some enhancement in the royal palace by Laksminar Simha.

This should be a secret and beautiful place for religion. There is much room and space to bring offers. But al the old temples are under maintenance and it isn’t possible to get in, for nobody. You have to pay 1000,- roepies to get at Durbar-plein. I think it’s not worthy but at the other hand you will support the construction by doing this

The Kathmandu Durbar Square remains the most remarkable legacy of Kathmandu's traditional architecture and history. It's an excellent place to spend a whole day with family and friends. Evening here is so magical that you won't forget in your life. The Local market is famous for jewellery, clothes, artifacts, and coffee. You have to bargain as things are a bit overpriced.

Well worth the entrance fee, which you can easily convert to a multiple entrance pass in the office on-site. A huge cultural collection in a small area, the enclosed temple area and museum are particularly nice, offering a break from the sun and noise. The level of detail in the wooden carvings is incredible. The other museum inside the palace is more modern, but brings together the history of Nepal nicely in a series of information boards

Kathmandu's Historic Durbar Square Short note about kathmandu durbar square Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historic plaza located in the heart of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The square is surrounded by ancient temples, palaces, and other important structures that reflect the architectural and cultural heritage of Nepal. Kathmandu Durbar Square was once the royal palace of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled Nepal until the 19th century. The square was the site of important ceremonies and festivals, including the coronation of the kings. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to marvel at its impressive architecture and rich history. Some of the notable structures in Kathmandu Durbar Square include the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the Taleju Temple, the Kumari Ghar (home of the Living Goddess), and the Kal Bhairav Temple. Visitors can also see the intricately carved wooden windows, doors, and balconies of the buildings, which are characteristic of the Newari style of architecture. Despite suffering damage in the 2015 earthquake, many of the buildings in Kathmandu Durbar Square have been restored and are open to the public. The square remains an important cultural and historical landmark in Nepal, and is a must-see destination for anyone interested in the country's rich history and architecture.

This place holds a cultural significance to the Nepalese people as well as has a good view of temples and royal palaces. It is good at night time. But, the motorcycles and cars arrive from all the way and is very mismanaged. It is also hard to find a parking space. The place is also filled with kids who ask you for money and try to heckle you non-stop.

Most people visit here in daytime so other time would mean less crowd however due to its location being in a popular place (basantapur) there's lots of crowd outside the Durbar square. The Durbar square is a must place if you are in Kathmandu. It is so beautifully carved and all over the wood which has lasted since years in different weather conditions. It is also one of the shopping areas for the tourists and the locals. Spread over a vast area, it is mostly crowded not just with the tourists but also the local people. If you are one of those who likes ancient buildings then spending 2-3 hours may not be enough. There are also temples around among the different architectures. You can simply find a place and enjoy the view.

At first we thought it was a gated area that need buy ticket or wearing special bangle pass to enter but it wasn't. If the guard ask you to pay the ticket then you need to, if not then you can enter free based on your appearance as local. normally white people they alert your present. It's more better of there is signage label each place / buildings. Maybe can give more info about the building such as date, function, materials used etc.

A wonderful place to see the truly old part of Kathmandu. The temples are impressive and worth visiting. There is a place where you can meet the Kumari (living goddess) in a hidden area. However, pictures are prohibited. Tourists meat pay 1000 rupees to enter the premises. But if you avoid the main entrance, you can get in for free. But this is not illegal, as these passages exist and aren’t known so well among tourists.

1000 rupees if you’re a non SAARC foreigner. You can extend your entrance pass for another day or until your visa runs out (you need to show your passport and give a passport sized photo for this option) for free at the tourism office on the south side of the square. Make sure to visit the museum tucked in a corner next to Hanuman’s statue as well as the Kumari Ghar (best time seems to be 9 am and 5 pm ish when the goddess herself comes out) as well as the Gaddi Baithak. All of these are free to see as long you’ve got your pass. Fantastically beautiful and magical place.
