Superb museum with a lot of interesting displays and exhibits on modern science, astronomy, medicine, and the human body. Might need half a day to explore everything. Not to be missed!

Lovely museum. Friendly staff. I really enjoyed the show in the autopsy theatre room with the room lighting up and the changing patterns in the "body" in the center of the room.

Wow, Wow, Wow! This museum was such an extraordinary experience. Beaaautifully designed, with so many super interesting topics in different sections from the different historical periods. Very well presented with detailed explanations of each object. The use of technology, videography, sound and music is top-notch. On the ground floor, there are many games and educational puzzles that let you experiment with scientific facts and phenomena. I highly recommend being there in the morning. Cause the museum is big and there are so many things to discover. I personally need to come back to see the missed sections.

After a meticulous restoration this museum is better than ever, hence the addition of Rijsmuseum. Although Leiden's most famous polymath is the focus, almost all aspects of science are touched upon. The exhibits are informative and many are also interactive. Well suited for visitors young and old. There is an outdoor area where the litte ones can play and experiment with water. Very centrally located.

Exceptional science museum - no wonder they received an award. Well organised and presented it's really a little jewel where you expect none given the inauspicious façade of the building. Well worth a visit, especially if you got kids.

History of technique with nice examples of historical instruments like the van Leeuwenhoek microscope.

An interesting museum. Part of the exposition is devoted to archaeology. Various fossils of marine animals, fish and land animals are shown. Part 2 of the exposition is devoted to the development of science and technology of the golden period of the Dutch sea expeditions. And part 3. permanent exhibitions are an art gallery where paintings by different authors and different periods of the Golden Age are collected. Museum galleries with a glass dome are particularly impressive. All the museum exhibits were collected by the person whose name the museum bears. It is difficult to call this museum conceptual, so 4 stars.

A beautiful building and a beautifully curated collection. Not a bad price for entry at all and the museum seemed to be and endless maze of rooms all filled with different things. There's a nice little cafe inside as well as a garden and a whole interactive children's area. The current temporary exhibition (microscopic discoveries) was a brilliant addition for a few months. Definitely try to see the presentation in the old surgical theatre at the beginning, it explains nicely the museum itself. I'd say try to add some seating around the building, as someone with a bad back it would have been nice to have a little spot to sit down. All in all, for 14 euros, definitely worth it.

Amazing science museum in the centre of Leiden. The exhibition takes you along different parts of the history of science. The museum starts with a nice show about the dissection of humans, followed by telescopes and maps of the world. There are also rooms about diseases and open questions in science. The temporary exhibition currently is about microorganisms and observing them with microscopes. There is also a great exhibition about math with many interactive games to play. The museum accepts the museumcard and is kids friendly. Parking close to the museum is not possible.

One of the best museums I've ever visited! The exposures were beautifully done, interactive, interesting. I've been there around three hours and enjoyed the whole time. You can definitelly come with older kids (cca 8+) and for the small ones, there is a nice water playground in the yard (you need to go there through the building but I think there's no need for buying the museum tickets).

A small but very nice and interesting museum in the centre of Leiden. Some quite interesting points if information and some are shown very originally.

One of the best in NL. Will give you enjoyment which you can’t compare with nothing else: food for thoughts. You can travel to science history and observe the beginning of it. Exposition is made very smart and interesting: you can spend 3-4 hours and never get bored. You can touch and you can try, you can ask and you can listen. It’s made like a dialogue and its so much exiting for people who like to think! Although my child 8 years old was enjoying also and he loved it. We will be back for sure later again.

Very interesting place to visit, showcasing all manner of instruments from the fifteen-hundreds and onwards that people used to advance their knowledge of our planet and its inhabitants, and to develop many fields of science. If you’re interested at all in biology, astronomy, math, chemistry or other sciences, this is definitely a great visit. You can see everything in about an hour if you wanted, but easily spend a half or full day if you want to take everything in with all the detail available.

If you are into Science, this is absolute must see. They have a reconstruction of an anatomy theater. The exhibits are outstanding, the collections amazing!!

What a museum! You can easily spend more than 2 hours hear visiting the normal exhibitions and the temporary ones. Really enjoyed the anatomical theatre and the medical section. Interesting, interactive and modern museum that is worth a visit.

Fantastic science (history) museum for families with children over 8 in winter and for even younger kids in summer (thanks to the scientific water playground in the atrium). Super central location, great interactive permanent exhibition and authentic Dutch charm as it is housed in traditional townhouses and attics. We come here regularly.

A nice small museum in the centre of Leiden. They create new expo's mostly from their own archive and collection. It's a kid friendly museum but the focus is science not just fun.

I enjoyed the museum to learn about different facets of history with respect to technology. The museum is not large in my opinion and you can see most things within 45mins or take your time for 2hours. The only suggestion I have is to get more interactive learning opportunities.

Surprisingly a very good experience. On my vacation weekend I walked passed this museum and entree is free for students. So I visited it spontaneously and it was really nice! The basics of fundamentele history of science was well showed and explained. For me as a biologist student it was basic information but still very interesting and it made me even more enthousiastic about the whole world of science.

Extensive and interesting collection of scientific instruments. A journey with a lot of audio and a great multimedia introduction, fun for the whole family.

Very nicely curated collection of broad spectrum sciences. Now also with an exposition on AI and ML. Cool stuff!

A quaint, fully bilingual museum which retraces the medical history of the Netherlands and the West in general. Perfectly interactive for adults and children! Free for students

Such a great little museum. Lots of exhibits with medical related stuff which is awesome. Also the staff is helpful, especially if you only speak English. The whole museum is actually very English friendly. Would totally visit again.

Absolutely amazing collection, my partner and I were in awe of every object! The interactive show in the beginning of the museum is incredibly well thought out & entertaining. All of the info is available on almost every artefact in the museum, but I wouldn't say it's a very 'reading heavy' museum, you can just browse through the objects without spending hours reading through descriptions, which is nice. Ample locker space, clean toilets & friendly staff are a plus.

The new exhibit "Besmet!" (Infected!) is very well presented and very interesting, with lots of insightful information. The whole museum is great, and includes lots of interesting activities for the kids, lots of interactive presentations. We saw that the inside garden is being prepared to be opened, it looks amazing for kids, with fun water (and science!) activities.

Very nice museum although a bit on the small side... Nice water play area in the courtyard for smaller kids that may not be able to appreciate all the exhibits.

We did the math expedition with the childern. Good explanation. Have to come back to finish the expedition and see the water playground in the garden with better weather...

Amazing museum about medicine and science advancements! They have an amazing display in the operating theater (only in Dutch) that had a fantastic light display. Saw their contagion display. They have so much info from current and past outbreaks. From a plague outfit to the vial from the first Covid vaccine injected in The Netherlands. That was just the first floor.

  • 5/5 Tim C. 2 years ago on Google
Great museum with loads of medical history. It was very interesting to see the 7min video in their little theater. Also with covid going on reading about other infections/diseases from the past was a great touch.

Excellent museum with a great collection! Went there for the third time last week, this time for the "besmet" exposition, excellent once again.

Nobody wore masks, children were running around, coughing and toughing everything. There are sanitizer stations after each room, but still made me feel uncomfortable. Otherwise, very interesting museum, lots of information presented in a fascinating way. Recommend visiting with care.
