Bigger than it seems and a lot of content in English. Even an explanation of the looms that other museums lack.

I have to join the haters on this one. I honestly have no clue what is going on in this museum. Just left confused. For us non-French speakers there are some audio pieces in English but they seem to be ChatGPT translations and digital voice readings. Strange choice when it appears plenty of money was spent on… something. I’m still not sure what it is.

Unfortunately for the amount of tourists who come through, there is very little in the way of multilingual signage to help navigate you through the maze of rooms. (My husband and I speak English, Spanish and some French.) As a person who walks with a cane and uses the lifts, it was easy to get turned around from the “natural” flow of the museum path. As with so many museums, If you have mobility issues, you will have to do more walking than the average person because this museum is formatted to tell a story. Be sure to look for the information booklets in your language before starting your walk because the displays are in French. They DO have portable seating. So that’s a plus. By the time we found the window that showed us the lowest level and a glimpse into the beautiful historical museum we thought we’d see, we were exhausted and didn’t stay to see it. I wish the viewer would be directed to start the tour there and work your way upward through time. When we attempted to leave the building following the handicapped exit signs, we arrived in a small area marked “Security”, no one was there and the door was locked. After waiting for a few minutes, we decided to exit via the front door down several stairs.

(Translated by Google) Very comprehensive museum on the history of the city of Lyon. We plunge into the past with pleasure thanks to stories to listen to and we also better understand the architectural evolution of the city as well as all the problems encountered. One of the most stunning places to visit in Lyon. I discovered this place while wandering in the streets of the Vieux Lyon, I instantly felt the need to discover every corner of the museum. I learned a great deal about the history of the city, regional products, important figures simply through art! Paintings, historical objects, sculptures. The thing that I truly appreciated in this museum is the use of technology to tell the story of Lyon, simply one of the most beautiful cities in France.

We happened to come during a festival so the museum was free. We speak a little French, so we could understand the exhibits. There was also a lot of hands on activities. We were pleasantly surprised.

The staff is helpful but the structure and curation of the place could be much better. It seems it tries to avoid social and political topics which for a museum of history is a bummer.

Extremely thoughtful and relevant. It really did shift my perspective about the city and gave me a lot of insight into the impact industry has had on the workers and local ecosystems while still being engaging and enjoyable. I'll need a second visit for the Marionettes, though. Suggestion for improvement: There wasn't much information given in the ticket office nor was there a map provided. But something that needs real attention is the many unsignaled level changes, ramps, and steps on the floors. I saw another visitor stumble to the point where she almost fell and had been taken by surprise at some of the uneven floors myself.

Enjoyed the visit of the museum. Helpful to understand the history of the city. The museum is interactive with modern details. Even if you can "rush"it, I would recommend to spend 1.5 hour and then go for a drink in the Gardane garden.

As a resident of Lyon, I take delight in going to this museum. It is historic in its setting, welcoming in its ambiance and gives a fair notion of the roots of what made the city and the region what it is today. It isn't great with the history of the medical, chemical and biotech sciences that ushered Lyon into the current era. But for deep history it paints and good picture.

Guided tours are interesting (€ 3 with the museum card). (Translated by Google) Museum located in a very beautiful building. The exhibitions on the evolution of Lyon and the one on water are very interesting, especially since they are interactive. I welcome the intention to make the younger generations aware of human activity and its impact on the surrounding environment. I had a little more trouble (although the subjects are interesting) on the last part of the museum which follows a very conventional frame with exhibits and signs to read.

Excellent little museum which covers the history of puppets and puppetry, and has changing exhibits in local history. Well laid out with a garden and restaurant/café on the third and fourth floors. There is a small shop at the entrance, and toilets on the 3rd floor (in the café) and the ground floor by the exit, where the lockers are. Sadly, the revolving exhibits meant that the main thing I had wanted to see wasn’t on display! That was Jean-Baptiste Willermoz’ Masonic apron. This hero and prolific Masonic writer was a silk merchant in Lyon and one of its more famous - and colorful - citizens. He was a friend of the celebrated French Christian mystic Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin. His brother, Jacques-Pierre, a doctor and alchemist, was executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror, and Jean-Baptiste escaped a similar fate by one night! During the bombardment of Lyon during the Revolution he made many dangerous trips out of the city by night to save historical documents. So it is a little sad that this illustrious family now finds its artefacts in storage…☹️

Such a disappointment - it used to be a great history museum, rich with information and easy to follow. Now it has turned into a bland, dumbed down, mash up that looks like a corporate event tailored for 5 year olds.

Nice light presentation of Lyon's city history. Ground floor audio and written presentations in French, English, and Spanish. All remaining presentations are in French mostly.

Quel dommage! What a shame! This WAS a great historical museum where one learned a ton about the full history of Lyon....now it is more of a corporate, PR driven light-weight experience in which very limited informaiton is imparted and the scope appears to be to entertain young school children. Too bad you cannot give zero stars....my reccomendation - dont bother going.

Be aware that, as per staff, the Top 2 floors are currently being "reorganized and reimagined". Accordingly, the museum experience, while still worthwhile, is only about half of what it would normally be, and may not be worth the money without a city pass.

Well we saw great images of the inside of the building on line but these are out of date and no longer accessible. So we paid 8 euros for a so so exhibition. We have no interest in puppets in fact they are creepy so I just can't recommend this. Dissapointed. Maybe the good bit is closed at the moment????

Unfortunately I cannot say anything about the museum, but about the Staff. I am very disappointed by this staff who doesn`t seem to know their own Governments Covid-19 rules. We wanted to visit the museum and only one person was not vaccinated, but she had been infected with Covid-19 and was immune and also had a certificate which was accepted everywhere else. But the lady from the museum told us, she cannot let her in because they NEED the QR code. This was no problem in any other museum which also needed the code. Also we looked it up on the page of the government which also said, that a letter about a recent Covid-19 infection is enough to join any facility. I am beyond disappointed by this lady who doesn`t seem to know her work, but probably just decided because of the race of my family to not let us enter.

Well done museum, nice staff. 4 stars because not much on role of silk in history of city and menu in restaurant only available by scanning QR code which didn't connect to website in my Android phone. Staff showed us it on their iPhone. Service fail for all Android users with zero non-digital back-up. Worth going but it's not long to go round. Cheap at least.

(Translated by Google) The exhibition "feet in the water" presenting the intimacy of Lyon with its rivers is too brief to present the subject well. Fortunately there is the restored wreck of a 17th century fish tank to enhance otherwise it would have been very disappointing. Moreover, for the price of entry, you can also visit the historical museum of the city of Lyon. This generous offer was hiding something !!!
