Our Lady of Fourvière is an imposing church on the top of the hill with panoramic views of almost the entire city of Lyon. Inside, the rich decoration gives a grandeur to the temple that fixes you. I believe it is the most important attraction of the city without this meaning that this beautiful city does not have many hidden beauties for the traveler. Also for the climb to the hill I highly recommend the picturesque wagon with the cog railway.

The church is located up the hill of Lyon city, the view is spectacular. You can see almost all the building in Lyon. Also the church and art are beautiful both in and out. It is not crowded by the time I visited. It is easy to get here by train. Recommended to come as it must be the bucket-list for Lyon city!

Visited Lyon City of France in October 2019, city has old ancient history. Very beautiful city having running rivers dividing the city giving amazing views. Also visited the hilltop Church and viewed the city at night, though it was all during the rain but enjoyed the rainy view.

Majestic basilica overlooking the city from the top of the hill just screams "MUST GO" regardless of faith. We didn't realize there was a tram and walked up the steep path which made the view all the more rewarding and justified paying tourist trap prices for drinks at the cafe at the top. Going in the late afternoon allowed us to see both the day and night view and each were beautiful in its own way. The tram station is right across from the front gate of the basilica and takes you through a tunnel down to a busy area two blocks from the river front by Pont Bonaparte. Walking downhill would've been easier but we paid to take the tram down anyways because that's what tourists are expected to do.

Visiting this magnificent cathedral provides an opportunity to appreciate the exquisite beauty of architecture, transcending its purely religious significance. It is highly recommended to maintain a sense of decorum, refraining from raising your voice, and respecting the solemn atmosphere during Masses when exploring the cathedral. Upon concluding your visit, you can savor a splendid panoramic view of the city from the nearby lookout point and indulge in a delightful coffee and snack at the outdoor café in close proximity.

With rich history and architectural prowess, this church is dedicated to virgin Mary who had been blessing the city of Lyon. The guided tour is a must for photographers because it takes you all the way to the very top with 360 degree of bird eyes view of the entire city, but of course speaking French will help since the guide is only in French.

With one word wow! it's an amazing Basilique. Went there on the 14of July on Bastille Day. There is an train to get up the mountain but if you like to walk and little hiking just walk to it. And just an amazing view on the city.

I think it is the most beautiful place of worship in Lyon and I think it is difficult to say otherwise. It is definitely a place that amazes externally and internally indeed and it can be seen from literally every corner of the city center of Lyon! It can be reached by funicular and from the hill you can enjoy a splendid view! Admission is free and it is possible to take photos.

Very serene and solemn experience. Was captivated by the history and culture and mainly the architecture of the building. Had a solemn time there and prayed with a candle. The view across the city of Lyon is breathtaking. I just picture many years ago and priests walking those compounds. It was indeed a nice experience.

Very beautiful church. The priest passing by greeted my family and I sitting in the pews and struck up a conversation in my native language, my children loved it. It was a great heart warming welcome for the children as it was their first time in Europe and inside a church. A side note, as a visitor to any holy place, please be respectful, keep your voice down and control your children. Always make sure you are aloud to take pictures (never assume you are allowed to take pictures just because there are pictures online). While we were there there was was woman who thought that everyone in the church couldn't hear her.

Another beautiful Basilica set on the hills of a tranquil environment. Either drive, walk up the foothills or use the funicular (only €3 return). Really enjoyed this space as it’s like a small town with some amenities, food places and shops. Take your time here and truly enjoy the historically nature of the building, land and the fire of Lyon.

This basilica is located in the most strategic point in Lyon to get a great view of the city. Just walk around the basilica to the other side of the plaza and you will see all of Lyon in front of you. You can see the two rivers, and all the areas up to the far mountains. For the basilica itself, I really liked the lion statue at the entrance, it's a great piece of art. The candle stands inside are so beautiful with all the colorful candle cups. I also liked the stained glass and paintings. I'll share some photos here.

This is quite simply one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. The Stained Glass windows are wonderful, especially around the altar. The mosaics around the knave are incredible. The views are spectacular. The external building is so well cared for.

The Basilica is beautiful inside and out, especially when seen up on the hill. The view looking out over Lyon is even better, you can see for miles and look down on all the other landmarks that you probably walked past on your way to this one. Stunning.

We walked through both floors and around the Basilica and it was very amazing. Tons of extremely impressive mosaics and lots of gold. A very amazing and dramatic view. They very well explain all the mosaics and art in the hall. The descriptions are only in French so make sure you either have your translating camera or someone to read the descriptions to you if you need as they are quite interesting. The lower floor was super unique showing different countries views on the church which isn’t super common it feels.

Beautiful church! It’s a place to gaze at and enjoy. We took the stairs to reach it. The church is located on the top of the city, which provides an excellent view to ponder the beauty of Lyon.

A beautiful piece of art. A great location to enjoy the view of city from the height. It is an equivalent of scare couer of Paris but maybe slightly better I feel. You can either walk uphill to this place, or can take a cable train or even a car since the place is well connected with roads.

A mesmerising church on the hilltop. The inside is ornate and beautiful. It’s totally worth the visit. You can grab a train up or walk up through the garden but it’s quite steep. There are a few rooms to explore and you can pay for a tour and get to see the underground and the top.

Free entrance. Extremely interesting pictures and paintings. Quite and calm place for prayers. Inside there are several books in different languages to purchase. The cathedral is on the top of a cliff. You can come on foyt but the uphill will be tiring. There is also the alternative (preferred option) of a 🚠 from the Babtist cathedral. From the cathedral you can enjoy a full panoramic view of Lyon. There are also payed binoculars, a cafeteria, toilets and benches to relax. The wind here is stronger than down the city. A must place to visit during your stay in Lyon. *There is a small Eifel tower nrxtbti the cathedral which host antennas though.

The Basilica is perched on a hill with a wonderful panoramic view of Lyon. All the ornate carvings make for an interior that is just amazing and will leave you speechless. Entrance inside the Basilica is free, but you will need a tour guide to visit on the top, the towers of the Basilica, and of course to know more about the history of this wonderful Basilica. However, the tour will be in French. The price is 10€ for adults, 5€ for under 18 years old, and free for under 5 years old and with limited slots available each day. After climbing up 345 stairs, it will be totally worth it to get your camera ready to capture every moment.

Beautiful inside and out. The funicular was closed so we hiked up and despite the heat it was a nice journey. Wish we'd researched the guided tour - after getting inside there was more I would have liked to see, including the view from the top. Even so, the plaza provided a great view of Lyon. Unfortunately we arrived late in the day and we couldn't get a table at any of the restaurants nearby, so we ended up walking back down to the old town for dinner. I'd suggest planning ahead or taking a taxi.

This is an amazing Notre Dame! One of the best I’ve seen in France. There’s a few way to reach it, there is a metro station stop directly in front, you can climb up the steep steps and the steep hike they Jardin de rosary (which we did) or you can drive up and park nearby. Highly recommended.

About 15 mins after you cross the bridge into Old Town. It’s a long upward ascent to the Basilica, but the view at the top makes it all worth it. The architecture is beautiful and the Priests were also very welcoming when we went inside. Recommended to visit.

Visiting Notre Dame in Lyon proved to be a nice experience. The place has lots of religious and cultural artworks and statues. One notable aspect is the fact that there is no entry fee. From when I went there, it wasn't very busy. Photography is restricted in certain areas. There are also spaces for prayers and there is an option to pay about 3 euros to light candles. I highly recommend visiting this place if you are staying in Lyon.

You can see this beautiful cathedral in all directions as she shine brightly to all but when you finally climbed up the hills( long walk) and see her in person, you will feel all in awe! Stunning inside and outside, you will see entire city of Lyon… absolutely stunning!

One of the most spectacular places to visit in Lyon during the summer. You are able to see the city of Lyon from the terrace of basilica and in the middle of the summer this place can be quite crowded. If there is no clouds the view can be amazing as most buildings starts to reflect the sunlight, making a unique view. Inside the basilica is spectacular with French architecture is showing its best of times. Good place to pray as well if you are keen on doing so.

Just stunning - the highlight of Lyon for sure. They call it 'the upside down elephant' because it resembles an elephant on its back and it's strangely apt. The inside is beautiful and FREE to enter which is nice. Also really enjoyed the innovative contactless votive candle payment system. Great gift shop across the street too. Just beware the very steep hill and stairs up to the Basilica - they're no joke!

Best thing to do in Lyon city. Walking up is tiring yet a nice experience. There is also an option of taking a furnicular up but I prefer the walk even with a 5 year old son with me. Once you reached the top, the panoramic view makes everything worthwhile as u can see Lyon at its finest.

Spectacular Basilica with its painted ceilings, domes and walls. It is really worth the visit. It has also a crypt where you can pray, learn about, and admire statues of the Virgin Mary from around the world. The Basilica is situated on the top of a hill that offers a impressive panoramic view of Lyon. It is a landmark not to miss.

The Fourviére is one if Lyon's great landmarjs. It can been seen from nearly the whole town. It us not mearly beautiful from the far but also a beautiful cultural heritage from close. Its inside is filled with huge wall paintings displaying the connection of the city to Saint Mary. The Plaza of the cathedral has a great view over the city that itself would be worth a visit. When In lyon this is obviulously a must go place!

One of the most beautiful churches I have been to, and would probably be difficult to beat! The amount of detail you see in every corner is breathtaking and it is unbelievable how they were able to preserve this. If you are okay for a short climb, I suggest you walk the hill going up there and pray the rosary as well if you're Catholic--every or so meter you would see a rose marker on the ground that can serve as 1 bead of the rosary. Otherwise you can take the funicular going up.

Spectacular!! An absolute must. We visited Lyon December 15-30/21. I recommend going in the evening at this time of year. The sight of the Basilica perched on top of the hill, from Vieux Lyon at night, with the incredible light show was simply spectacular ❤️ Then head up the hill and witness the magnificence of the light display, choreographed with music from the Lyon National Orchestra and Lyon Opera, on the outside of the Basilica. I was speechless. The inside of the Basilica itself is very impressive. Don't miss a visit inside after the light display!

Beautiful interior and lots of history. It was nice to quietly look around and it was free! The views from just outside the Basilica which look over the centre of Lyon and it’s rivers is stunning, although I would suggest taking the pathways down the hill a bit further so your view isn’t obstructed by the trees.

A must see if you are visiting Lyon. It's a very steep and long walk up so we caught an uber from our hotel. Once up there is you get a beautiful sight of Lyon as it sits ontop of the hill overlooking the city. Inside there are 3 churches and one was in service when we arrived in the morning. The church's are stunning and ornate. Beautifully maintained and well respected by the visitors.

From Italy, to Spain, to Portugal and France, this is probably the most luxuriously decorated church we've ever seen! Its surprising so well preserved and from sculptures to the mosaics this is such a beautifal one! Lots of activities in the church, on the day we were there there was a live band performance. Unfortunately the crypt was closed.

Located in top of the hill. Definitely worth a visit. Also there is a treasury downstairs that should not be missed. From Lyon old Town, take the F2 funicular to the church. After the church you can walk down 5 minutes to the Roman ruins

This is one of the more interesting site to visit in Lyon. The Basilique has immaculate store work not seen in centuries, but also has the feeling that some work is left to do. It leaves some interesting thoughts in your mind as you walk around the structure. Inside the tile and store work is ornate and beautiful. Of course there are also some shops around the structure, which is nice, and some other historic sites a short walk away. You don't need a lot of time to explore here, so don't sweat it if you just pop in for a quick look around.

  • 5/5 Melvin L. 10 months ago on Google
Suggestion. It is anice place for outdoor walks. 1. Recommend to take the train up because the walk can be really tiring. Perhaps buy one way and walk down after. 2. Stay hydrated and bring water. It's slightly pricey to get drinks by the Basilica. 3. Wear comfortably. It's more like a hike. 4. There's a proper toilet upstairs.

Really great place. Inside church u can see great art of design. Back side of church you can see Lyon city n River . U can take metro from Lyon part dieu ( west side mall)/ sax gambetta. Just had an incredible experience at the Notre-Dame Basilica Fourvière in Lyon! 🙌✨ The journey to reach this magnificent landmark was absolutely worth it. Climbing the steps up the hill, taking in the stunning views of the city along the way, and finally standing in awe of the basilica's beauty – it's a memory I'll cherish forever. Lyon, you never cease to amaze me! 😍🏰 #NotreDameBasilicaFourviere #LyonExploration #UnforgettableViews

Very beautiful church. Architectural masterpiece. Interior is something to see. There is a lot to say, it's worth the walk up the hill.

The view of Lyon from up here is marvelous. The Basilica is itself beautiful. You can stand outside and just observe the many motifs on the building for some time. The church floors are also beautifully done with mosaic.

Lavish and beautiful interior. Free entry. Funicular goes right up to the entrance of the basilica. Amazing views of the city from a viewpoint near the basilica. Unfortunately, basilica's rooftop is only accessible with a paid guided group tour.

There is a reason this place has 20K reviews. It is unbelievable. Truly one of the most beautiful spaces I've ever been in. Every surface a piece of art. The mosaics in perfect shapes, the stained glass, the dark wood, the columns and carvings. It's a feast for the eyes. Don't miss the painting of Mary and the Lion on a cloud over the door. Lyon is truly blessed with this jewel.

The interior is spectacular. Also a good spot to see the city in sunrise/sunset. Can be a little bit crowded during the blue hour.

Lovely Basicala should be on everyone's bucket list. Beautiful mosaic and sculptures everywhere a true feast for the eyes, not a five minute visit as so much to see.

The most representative of the monument at Lyon city. It is a very famous place, where often for the 14th July 2023 (national day) fireworks have been launched and seeable from the Saône river.

Beautiful architecture and interior. Mosaics on the floors, narrative murals on the walls, and stained glass windows. Still an active church. Fantastic view of Lyon and the rivers from this high point. A small coffee shop next door.

A building that draws you to it from even across the river. It is beautiful and the views from the grounds are fantastic. You may not always be able to sightsee inside as they have services often. Truly holy atmosphere.

So amazing! Gorgeous inside and great view on Lyon. Must to visit. We took funicular on top (use simple 2€ ticket if you go one direction or would on top less then 1 hour) and then went down on foot.

The revered basilica for the Lyonaise. Though minor, it is their Notre Dame and it is as important as the one in Paris. It was built with private donations in the late 19th century in a dominant position overlooking the city. It is the highest point on the top of the hill where a fourvier can get up to. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of Trajan (Vieux-Forum). Two styles of architecture, Romanesque and Byzantine, can be seen here, which were not a popular choice at the time. It was designed by Pierre Bossan. It has four main towers, and a belltower topped with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary similar to that of the Duomo in Milano featuring fine mosaics, picturesque stained glass, and a crypt of St Joseph.

A beautiful, ornate cathedral that I would highly recommend visiting for anyone who appreciates such places. It probably won't be quiet, as it's a big draw in the city, but it won't matter. And there is a great view from just outside the cathedral as well as a restaurant and café. Parking your bike isn't super easy, is my only criticism, as there doesn't seem to be any dedicated spaces for them. However, I was pretty easily able to put it somewhere.

Very nice church. To get there, me and my friend did the 20 minutes long pilgrimage, which I recommend doing only when it’s not too hot.

The Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon is an architectural marvel, standing proudly atop Fourvière Hill. Its stunning blend of Byzantine and Romanesque styles captivates visitors with intricate mosaics, towering spires, and breathtaking views of Lyon. The interior is a masterpiece of art and craftsmanship, adorned with richly detailed religious motifs. One of the most beautiful cathedral I have ever seen. It also has another floor right under the main church dedicated to the saints from around the world. 2 mins fernicular ride takes you up the hill.

Very beautiful basilica that you can visit for free. The view of the city from up there is incredible as well. You can either walk up or take the funicular. It’s definitely worth the walk because on the way you can see lots of roman ruins
