(Translated by Google) If you are visiting Lyon, not far from the famous Notre-Dame de Fourvière Cathedral, which is also impressive and majestic with absolutely magnificent architecture, this historic site remains unique and breathtaking! Free entry ... These two places overlook Lyon and offer a panoramic view of the city. Surprisingly large and well organised museum that looks a bit dull from the outside. Once inside, which is free for seniors, there is a long ramp that brings you down to the lowest level. On the way, there are many interesting items on display, like sculptures and large mosaic floors. On the side there are large windows where you get a good view of the theater outside. That theater has free entry for all and is huge. There is a smaller theater which was used for music or oratory performances

Lots of cool ancient Roman texts, sculptures, bowls and especially the mosaics. The Lego exhibit was really well done with various builds alongside actual exhibits, it’s a good way to show what the past looked like and also engage the younger audience.

As a part of my Sperm Donation World Tour of France, it was important to learn about Roman history here, spectacular to imagine the effort and what went on here many centuries ago!

Great theatres, great museum, great view, great place overall. Cheap museum (4€/person) but with more to see than most have energy for. Excellent exhibition with one small exception and that is very small signs and not consistent in english. The theatres outdoor may be missing a lot of structures compared to for an example the theater in Orange but you can still imagine the grandeur they once had. Overall a must visit if you like history/Roman time

For 2.5Eur entry fee, it provides a lot. Yes all the exhibits are sort of second tier, but gives you great context of the local area. Needs more English localisation, however.

Really amazing to learn about Romans founded Lyon and the artefacts and mosaic were immaculately preserved. So many things to see and one can easily spend hours here. Tip: Bring own bottle of water. I haven’t expected I’d be spending such a long time here. But there were no places inside to get a drink. Understandably since it’s a museum, but definitely will bring my own bottle next time.

The museum's location atop the Fourvière Hill provides a breathtaking panoramic view of Lyon, setting the stage for an enriching experience. Inside, the exhibits are a treasure trove of artifacts, sculptures, and archaeological finds from the Roman era. The highlight of my visit was the remarkably preserved Roman theater, which is part of the museum complex. The museum also offers interactive displays and multimedia presentations that bring history to life, making it engaging for visitors of all ages. The staff at the museum were friendly and knowledgeable, readily sharing insights and stories about the exhibits. In conclusion, the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about Lyon's ancient past. Veni, Vidi, Edi! (I came, I saw, I was enriched)

This was a really great museum; one of the best museum experiences I've ever had. The layout was great, and the special exhibition of the Legos is a really great addition.

(Translated by Google) Rome in miniature. All of Lyon, sorry Lugdunum, awaits you in this very well presented museum. The view of the theaters is spectacular. The entrance fee, very reasonable (not even the price of a beer, that is to say). Too bad the exit corridor is so sad, there must be some spare parts to exhibit there.

(Translated by Google) I have known this museum for about 4 years and have seen the quality deteriorate for some time. The last time I visited this museum was a month ago with relatives and I was amazed to still not find any visitor documentation or leaflets presenting the museum and its collections to recover, it was already the case in previous years ... The reason given by the staff being the last time the COVID I did not notice. What a surprise today to find various self-service paper documents at reception, but still no document presenting the museum and still no visit brochure! Any cultural site worthy of the name delivers such documents. Doesn't LUGDUNUM have a dedicated service? In addition, half of the screens have not worked for some time now and the attractive animations are gradually diminishing. What is going on ? Has LUGDUNUM taken a new direction jeopardizing its reputation?

This museum is outstanding. We were astonished by how good it was. It’s five or so floors full of Roman treasures most of which are very well arranged and presented. The mosaics are easily the best we’ve ever seen anywhere. Some of them are huge and look like they were laid yesterday. The audio guide is very good and well worth having. If you have any sort of passion for Roman history and antiquities, this museum is absolutely not to be missed. Allow at least an hour and a half as there is lots to see and take in including the ruins of the ancient amphitheater. Tip: if you walk up the hill to this facility you may get a little Lost bear Notre Dame as we did as they seem to be missing a sign there. We got directions from a lovely local who just said keep going in between the two yellow buildings. She was right! We walked between the buildings and on a little way and there it was!

This museum is showing a collection about the prehistoric and gallo-roman history of Lyon. It is a great collection, I am surprised by how lively most of the artifacts are, some sculptures are full of life. Also the technological prowess of the Romans is illustrated by several items : - a water pump, - the remnants of a ship, - the system to raise the scene curtain in front of the theater with counterweights. There are also beautiful human objects including dishes, jewelry, weapons, ...

Lugdunum is a very spectacular Museum. The architecture is amazing. The exhibition is great. It deals with the Gallo-Roman era of the city of Lyon. The museum itself provides an overview of the Roman city, its houses, architecture and history. You can walk down from the 4th floor to the 1st floor and the exit. Large windows open the view of the amphitheater, which is still used today. Grand architecture, grand exhibition, grand archeology. Lugdunum is a must for every visit to Lyon.

(Translated by Google) An extraordinary Gallo-Roman Museum firstly because of its contemporary architecture “all concrete” on 4 levels with impressive spans. And on the other hand by a large collection of objects, stones, reconstructions, models, sculptures all sublimated by concrete! On the exterior side, this Museum is covered with greenery and only suggests a few openings which overlook imposing Gallo-Roman remains (Original) Un Musée Gallo-romain extraordinaire premièrement de part son architecture contemporaine « tout béton » sur 4 niveaux avec des portées impressionnantes. Great museum! Astonishing view to the amphitheater!! In December 2021 there was a temporary exhibition about power in Roman times... amazing work!! Unlike the Beaux Arts museum this does have descriptions in English which I highly appreciated. Overall, this is a must visit museum in Lyon.

Beautiful museum but not tourist / non-Francophone friendly - when we arrived we were told it was also in English but many of the explanations were all in French of had a small amount of English. Again style, architecture, contents, etc. worth seeing but it’s just a shame for those of us curious about the story behind it all!

A must if in Lyon, even if high on the hills. The museum is beautiful by itself, all architecture enthusiasts should visit. Amazing historical objects! This collections are reasonably well organized and extremely adapted to children in the cutest way possible. Unfortunately, only accessible in English for Adults, while the games for children are all in French. Museum has some accessibility: touch figurines, ramps and elevator. If in hold of a City Card (2023) it’s a guarantee of free pass. My complains are about the not so warm reception with tourists - the classical French stereotype of dismay. Also the very few working hours, which are also typical for France. Ten minutes before the closing it’s announced on the speaker that you should start going to the nearest exit, however, in my case, minutes before the time, the main exit was already closed and the other ones very hard to locate, since the attendants insist on speak French even when they know English it’s a bit hard to ask for help. However, it’s still a must visit if you go to the ruins of the theater cos of the beautiful models and explanations they have for what the place looked like at its prime.

Really beautiful facility! There’s always a lot going on there. When we were there, they were setting up for a concert and the band was sound checking. Our friends have been there before and got to see a real mock Roman sword fight! The history is really incredible and the facilities are in great shape. This location is free to enter and no tickets are required.

Entry is €4 for an adult but it's a large and excellent collection, I'd recommend planning for at least 90 minutes if you want to read about all of the displays. Plenty of artefacts from every period and aspect of life in Lugdunum and offers great views of the adjacent ancient theatre

Excellent museum covering the history of Lyon from its founding in 49 BC. Unbelievable collection of Roman artifacts including several very well preserved mosaics. The design of the museum is also very impressive as it has been completely integrated into the landscape adjacent the two fantastic roman theatres. Included in the Lyon CityPass. I would definitely recommend a visit.

A museum with plenty of interesting items but clearly designed with the idea we had of museums many many years ago. A bit of a collection of items with overly specific context-less descriptions more than a modern museum. Plenty of old signs saying "this will be fixed" (or updated, or whatever) gives the impression of abandonment. The lady at the ticket office wasn't really welcoming either.

This is worth a visit to see such a longstanding amphitheater from more than 2000 years ago

I visited this place twice because it left an impression on me. To think of all the events these stones have witnessed.

A modern museum about the roman past of the city. If you got kids, could be a great place to visit as they have a lot of things to do for the children. There are lot of things to see and learn. Impressive.

Beautiful Roman amphitheatre with an attached museums. The museum is a steal for 4€ as it contains plenty of artifacts such as Romand statues and intricate mosaics. As well, spread throughout the museums are interactive displays for children to learn about the Roman civilization. Only downside of the museums is the description cards could use and update (lacks information, some are showing their age).

Seems interesting but almost no English translation. If you don’t know French you might want to skip that one. Some cool artifacts to look at though.

Pretty good museum on roman history and relics, distributed over several floors. The route is downwards with elevators available to go back up. It has some nice pieces and lovely mosaics. There are several stops for children to do a quiz and carry out some fun activities. They have two panoramic windows onto the amphitheater. All in all, a good museum given the relatively low prices.

Fantastic museum, incredibly helpful staff, good exhibition and the architecture is beautiful. Do yourself a favour and check it out. But make sure to take the time to wander properly and appreciate how they put the space together.

The museum is very beautiful! I'm super amazed that the museum was built as a wheelchair-accessible place from the beginning and it's not something extra. It's very friendly for kids and there are a lot of activities for them that will help them learn and have fun.

Witness the Roman architecture beauty in this amphitheatre. Similar to the Colosseum, this monument offers one a glimpse of the Roman technique and design.

An interesting museum on the history of Roman settlement in Lyon. Organized in a spiral downwards, there was tons of artifacts, such as beautiful mosaics and old roman art. At only five euros, they was plenty of information on the daily life of the Romans in this area and why they settled it. Lots of little activities for kids as well. Overall, it was a very informative museum with lots to see. Plus it was directly overlooking the Odeon. The museum bottom floor exits to the odean as well, which was pretty cool. Overall, definitely worth seeing. It may not have been the largest museum on Rome I've seen, but it was definitely one of the better organized ones.

If you want to get a great view of the city and listen to music or just have a funny time discovering ancient places - it’s a right choice. When I was there - it was a free entry for visitors. So, we could attend a rehearsal of some rock groups.

Very interesting museum about the Roman history in Lyon. And the architecture of the museum is beautiful. It is accessible to everyone, you have elevators at every floor.

The museum, itself, was as remarkable as its contents. Informative and educational as well artistically pleasing.

A very well organised and impressive Museum exploring Lyon from Roman colonisation through to Christianization. The free audioguide is worth picking up at the entry, which provides explanations and further context for each area (esp. for non-French speakers). The exhibits are organised chronologically as you descend through the facility - which itself is worth visiting for the architecture alone. The 'light cannon' windows, built into the hillside also provide a fantastic view of the Ampitheatre. I would recommend visiting the museum before the Ampitheatre, so that you can explore the ruins with more context 😊

The importance of Lugdunum can't be stated enough. This Museum is an homage to it. If you love Roman history, you must see this Museum. The area is cute too and the Amphitheater is impressive

The Gallo-Roman Museum in Lyon-Fourvière is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Spread across several floors, the museum takes visitors on a journey through Lyon’s Roman past, with exhibits showcasing everything from intricate mosaics and sculptures, to ancient coins and weapons. The highlight is undoubtedly the restored 2nd-century theater, which is still used for concerts and events today. The museum also offers guided tours and workshops for children. Overall, a fascinating and well-curated insight into Lyon’s rich heritage. France was an important part of the Roman Empire, known as Gaul at the time. Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in 58-50 BCE, and it became a key territory of the empire until the collapse of Roman influence in the 5th century CE. Many Roman ruins can be found throughout France, including the famous Pont du Gard aqueduct and the amphitheater in Nimes. The Romans left a lasting impact on French culture, including the use of Latin in language and law, and the development of a centralized government system. The Roman Empire had a significant presence in Lyon, which was known as Lugdunum during Roman times. Lyon was the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis and served as an important political, economic, and cultural center. It became a major hub for trade and had several Roman structures, including a theater, amphitheater, and aqueduct. Lyon continued to thrive even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and played a crucial role in the Middle Ages and beyond. Today, traces of its Roman past can still be seen in the city's architecture and archaeological sites
