This is a mandatory culinary experience when you're in Montreal. The meat is marinated for 10 days before being smoked for 12 hours and steamed for 4 hours. The result is the juiciest smoked meat sandwich. I highly recommend the rye bread and pickle to go with it. This restaurant specifically is the North Star of smoked meat. It doesn't look like much when you walk in, but when you eat the sandwich you can taste the tradition and history. The staff are really friendly and funny. Please stop by here if you have time in Montreal.

The Smoked meet sandwich is really good but I feel all of the hype of this restaurant kind of let's it down. It was fantastic, melt in your mouth meat but is it the best I've ever had? No. The giant pickles are fantastic but the fries are way to greasy and not very crisp. I probably would of enjoyed it more if I hadn't been told by everyone that this was the place to eat in Montreal. May eat here again but would do take away because it takes a while to get a table.

I have been coming to this place every year for five years. I visit Montreal for work and this place is a must! This is not just a beef sandwich shop, this is THE salted beef/pastrami sandwich shop. You cannot come to Montreal without a visit. I recommend the half lean half fatty combo, the fatty cut is cooked so slowly it melts in your mouth. I am someone who hates fatty meats, but this really adds to the flavour and is not chewy. Top this absolute titan of a sandwich off with a side of fries, a pickle and a cherry soda and you've got a complete night. The staff are friendly and there is a reason you normally have to wait for a table. Popularity means queues and queues mean good food.

I’m from New York and I thought I knew what I was getting into coming here but smoked meat is quite different from pastrami in terms of the texture and even taste! Sandwiches are good portions at lower prices, with options for pickles, slaw or fries as a side. Bar staff can be a bit gruff but overall it’s an efficient process!

First time there and probably last. This place has become famous to a degree where they think they don’t need to make an effort. So if you have been drinking all night then it’s probably a good place other than that it’s just an over rated extremely expensive place. Our order for 2 came to over $40!!! That’s for 2x towering meet slapped between soggy white loaf, 2x cans and a small fries( what seems like it’s been soaked over night in oil then fried, then soaked in more oil. Oh and no pickle insight. Better going to a deli at a grocery store and load off the meat there and you might have money left over to buy a nicer bread.

Very tender beef in the sandwich. The portion is good. There are two separate entrances and we accidentally walked into the take-out one and just realized that after we finished the meal. The sandwiches seem to have been prepared before our order. The meat doesn’t taste smoky at all although it’s called smoke meat. It’s actually more like steamed. Stronger flavour would be better. The dinning area of the takeout store is not that pleasant, with some flies while we’re eating.

Schwartz's Deli in Montreal holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike as a beloved institution known for its iconic smoked meat sandwiches. During my recent visit, I had the opportunity to sample their renowned fare, and while the experience was undeniably enjoyable, there were a few aspects that prevented me from awarding it a full five-star rating. Schwartz's Deli is a no-frills establishment, exuding an old-world charm that adds to its authenticity. The star of the show, their smoked meat sandwiches, are undeniably delicious. The tender and flavorful meat, thinly sliced and piled high between slices of rye bread, delivers a taste that is quintessentially Montreal. The generous portion sizes ensure that you won't leave hungry. However, the downside of Schwartz's Deli is its popularity. The long lines and wait times can be quite daunting, especially during peak hours. While the staff works diligently to keep the line moving efficiently, it's worth considering this aspect when planning your visit. Additionally, the dining area can be cramped and noisy, which may not be ideal for those seeking a more relaxed dining experience. Overall, Schwartz's Deli is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in Montreal's classic smoked meat sandwiches. While the ambiance and wait times may not be perfect, the authentic flavors and hearty portions make up for it. A solid four-star experience that showcases the essence of Montreal's deli culture.

Schwartz's Deli is an iconic gem! The ambiance exudes a classic deli charm, capturing the essence of Montreal's culinary history. The smoked meat sandwiches are an absolute must-try—flavorful, tender, and perfectly spiced. The bustling atmosphere adds to the experience, making it feel like a true Montreal institution. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Schwartz's is a culinary journey worth savoring.

Definitely worth checking out for their world famous meat sandwich. This place has A LOT of hype so expect huge line ups even at off peak hours but it’s totally worth it. The sandwich is incredible - would recommend getting the pickle and coleslaw to go with it as a perfect trio pairing. There’s some seating in the back but not particularly great options to dine in. Service was really friendly and they did a good job in managing the lines while keeping spirits high. Overall vibe and ambience of the place is really unique and cool. Definitely check it out if you’re in town!

Do yourself a favour and have a sandwich at Schwartz’s Deli because they are phenomenal and an explosion of flavour in your mouth. There is a reason this place is an institution, the menu is simple and delicious. Smoked meat sandwich for the win! Pickles and fries on the side were also really good

I arrived after 9pm and there were only a couple of people in line. Service was really quick once I was seated. The smoked meat sandwich was excellent! It wasn't dry and the flavor was really good. I really liked the diner feel as well. In a city full of fancy restaurants it felt good to just pull up at the bar of a diner and have great food.

Arrived at 10am in the morning, and there was already a line outside of the store! The service was quick and I didn't have to wait so much time at all! Ordered the famous sandwich and it was sooo good. The price was reasonable (even cheap relating to other places). Highly recommend!

So glad we made it here. Loads of recommendations from anyone who had been to Montreal. The dining room looked crowded and we hesitated going in for sit down but the line moved really fast. The welcoming and spirited staff know how to get a large volume of diners in and eating in a hurry without making us feel rushed. Couldn't believe how fast the food made it to the counter and it was absolutely delicious. Simple and easy to eat but very satisfying. Happy we sat at the counter so we could interact with our excellent server. He and the gentleman making the sandwiches were having loads of fun and it made our meal memorable.

Came here after so many years to sit in and enjoy the restaurant vibe that I remembered when I was a kid. The smoked meat was superb as usual and the fries were delicious. Again, not enough is said about the folks who work there and serve you. They are so courteous and are always wanting to please. Had a good conversation today with our server asking when they’re going to have a Schwartz’s in Toronto. Looks like it’s not gonna happen. Oh well, I guess I will have to continue to come to Montreal for my smoked meat fix, and I don’t mind at all. Thank you!!

Once upon a time, on one of my first trips to Montreal, some friends recommended going to Schwartz's after a night of drinking in a pub nearby. I ordered a "fatty" sandwich with fries, a pickle and cherry cola. It was absolute heaven on earth and was the first of many subsequent visits. Fast forward to today... I went out of my way while in Montreal for business to have the Schwartz's experience. I don't mind the large lineup of tourists... but sadly the quality is not there anymore. Instead of melt in your mouth brisket, the meat was chewy and bland. The fries were cooked in old oil that was not hot enough... They were a soggy and oily mess. The staff no longer asked me what type of meat (fatty or lean) I would prefer. It is still a good meal, but nothing like it once was.

As one of the most famous places in Montreal it was delicious. I would highly suggest not getting the sandwich and instead get a large plate, which includes bread and meat and you make your own sandwich. Much more affordable. Get a large plate and a poutine for $50 everything included. A must visit spot for Montreal. The customer service was great, and the service was quick and efficient. I went twice and once there was a line but it moved quickly. If you just want to pick up a sandwich or large portions of meat you can go to there sister restaurant beside the store.

Really enjoyed the smoked brisket here at Schwartz's Deli!! Wish I got one more to munch on, but was satisfied with the one~ It was simple but flavorful. Would definitely come back again! By the way, for those who are going for the first time, the first door is for takeout (much shorter of a line which means you'll get to try their delicious food a lot more quickly), and the second door is for dine-in (this line was incredibly long). We went with the first door :) Oh, and don't forget the hot peppers!! It balances out the fatty flavors of the smoked brisket~~

I was really looking forward to going to Schwartz's deli. I've been to Montreal many times and never actually made it to this deli. I was pretty excited to give it a try. I found it to be a lackluster sandwich. It seems to very much be lacking in any sort of flavor. The server did not ask me what trim level I wanted and assumed I wanted a medium trim. It was very fatty the second picture in my review is all of the fat that I pulled from my sandwich. If given a choice i would have ordered the lean version no doubt. One would think that with all that fat the meat would be amazingly tender but it was not. The pickle was excellent. Staff was friendly but unfortunately the food did not live up to all of the hype. I will not be back.

Overall: good place to eat quick and leave. Get the sandwich, pass on everything else as it is over priced and unsatisfactory. Food: sandwich was smooth and flavourful as you would expect. Pickles were also delicious. Fries, on the other hand was old, greasy, and stale. Service: decent. Some rude and some polite. Environment: very small space - expect to sit with other people in the restaurant. Overall, unkept and dirty in appearance.

When in Montréal, Schwartz is still a must-go destination for smoked meat sandwiches. It has been around for nearly a century. We came by on a rainy weekday morning and were able to walk straight in to our pleasant surprise. Inside the diner, not much changed since our last visit other than prices. Famous people dotted the walls including Celine Dion who also turns out to now be a co-owner! While we ordered our sandwiches, our waiter confirmed his younger self stood beside Chris Rock. But don’t count on much of a personal touch with the fast pace of service driving diner flow. The sandwich platters ($13.25) arrived with heaping portions of smoked meat. We happily consumed these with Coke while other tables added pickle on the side. The smoked meat was well-seasoned, moist and particularly flavourful in the fattier slices. Magic with some rye bread & mustard, that’s all you need! Old school vibe was everywhere in this small yet bustling deli shop. Ceilings were as poorly maintained as ever. Cash was paid at the front. Staff did well to manage the lineups that soon built up not long after our meal.

Hadn't been to Schwartz's in 13 years. And just as I imagined, it's exactly the same. If you expect the friendliest service in the world, this isn't your place. But it's part of the charm as employees have been there for decades, they still bring the food quickly and without a hickup, so no complaints there. Food is still great, gotta get the Cherry Coke with the pickle and plate of smoked meat. I go medium, some prefer lean but if not it is too fatty and tough to eat. It's a must when you come to Montreal and always will be.

A cool place for sure with lots of history. But i don't see what all the fuzz is about with their Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwiches. I found it to be very underwhelming. Had such high expectations after reading the reviews. But its a very very basic Sandwich. Bread, a little bit of Mustard and the Meat. That's it. Just like the picture shows. I asked for the most popular item on the menu. And yes, they were very busy and sold a ton while i was sitting there. I'd probably go back to try something else, but won't make a detour for their Sandwich.

A special resto, old enough to make it super famous in Montreal. The smoked beef is very delicious. But the menu isn’t rich enough to offer various options. I’ve already been there twice, and could repeat it. Service is quick as expected. The restaurant is always busy and sometimes people line up outside waiting to enter and be seated. All in all, a nice experience and worth a try.

Schwartz’s Deli is a staple in Montreal. I am very glad that my partner and I were able to try their food! The deli have two different entrances, they have a more formal sit down dining area (the right entrance), and a pickup entrance (the left side). We went into the left side. The pickup area has some bar seating if you walk towards the back. Their food is quite phenomenal! I loved the sandwich and their fries. My only complaint is I thought it was slightly overpriced, although I understand this is a novelty place.

Came here under recommendation that is was the best smoked meat in the city. There was a long line up to get in to sit down. We waited and eventually were seated at the bar stools to get in sooner. This place lived up to the hype. It was delicious. We had the #2 Poutine with smoked meat and #4 classic smoked meat sandwich. We also had great friendly service by the gentleman serving us behind the bar. Definitely would recommend and would come again. Worth the lineup wait.

🛑 MUST TRY 🛑 if you’re in Montreal and you’re looking for a place to have a delicious and reasonably priced meal, you must eat here! Briana was our waitress and she was fantastic! She made our experience at this staple of Montreal’s restaurants a great experience! A must try is the sandwich with a pickle and a black cherry drink.

13000 reviews, near 5 stars. You can imagine. It's delicious. Very plain but it works! It's delicious. Just meat, bread, and a tiny dot of mustard Its expensive for what you get but you get to understand what people are talking about. The meat is extremely tender and delicious. I wish they would put more work into condiments and bread but since the meat is so good, it makes up for it

You gonna love this place. Schwartz's Deli was recommended to me by local because I wanted to try the "Montreal" version of poutine with meat! Absolutely great service, huge portion of food and yummy drinks. Also check the "wall of fame" full of photos and celebrities they visited Schwartz's Deli. And definitely try their sandwich with mustard and meat only + pickle.

Great fast service. Full attention to safety & COVID-19 protocol Grateful for the options available! Juicy...(high fat) content or dry... lean (no fat) we wanted our smoked meat sandwiches dry! Mom's cholesterol concern. Great sandwiches but didn't come with traditional pickles on side. 👍 really enjoyed the atmosphere! Must try. We ordered "dry" of course it was good... I think juicier would have been better.

We heard a lot about this place. After a lot of searching for a place to park we finally managed to reach the place after 10 minutes of walking. There was quite a line up outside their sit in restaurant. We waited for 20 minutes before we got in. The place was cramped and we had to share the table with another family. The server was quick, and was very friendly. It was surprising that he was the one who ushered us in, took our orders and delivered too. He was quite immaculate in taking so many orders. However the sandwich itself was not quite what we expected. It was good but I can't say it was great. Maybe my expectations were different. They need to open another location for people to sit down and enjoy the meal. The current place is quite uninviting and you don't feel like sitting there and having a relaxed meal. The old charm can remain as it is but a newer and more spacious place will draw more customers. But the place is definitely worth going to at least one just for its historical value.

Schwartz’s Deli is a meat lover’s paradise. Their smoked meat sandwich is a true delight. The meat is perfectly smoked and seasoned, and the rye bread with mustard complements it beautifully. The vintage decor adds to the charm of the experience. If you’re in Montreal, don’t miss out on this iconic deli.

I have no idea what happened to this place but damn it’s nowhere near as good as it used to be. The meat was dry, unflavoured and overall disappointing. I remember back in the day thinking this was the best smoked meat sandwich I’ve ever had but it barely passes as a good sandwich anymore. How the mighty have fallen, sad.

The deli is always busy and the service is great. Makes you feel like you're welcome and they give recommendations on how the meat should be done. Our sandwiches were great with coleslaw salad. A traditional place and it's no wonder why there's always a line.

I went into this having very high expectations because of all the hype around this place. So it would have been easy to be disappointed. However that was not my experience. The food was amazing. We got the classic smoked meat sandwich and cherry coke to wash it down, just as is recommended. Our wait wasn’t super long even though we had a party of 6. The dining area is small so we were packed in tight. The service was good, no complaints here.

Excellent, tasty smoked meat sandwich! We were in Montreal for just a day and we knew we had to come to Schwartz’s. everyone we talked to recommended it and said it was a must-try. We took the route 55 bus from downtown Montreal, it was very quick but a bit crowded as it was afternoon rush-hour. It drops you off right in front of the deli. When we got there, there was a bit of a line but it moved quickly and we were seated within 15 minutes. This was on a monday late afternoon. It is cramped inside and loud but it all feels very authentic. The interior decor is super interesting as they have saved many newspaper features and magazines with the deli featured. I had the smoked meat sandwich, which comes with mustard and piled high with delectable meat. It was extremely tasty and very filling. The meat is not fatty, and it falls apart in your mouth- just delicious. We also had fries, coleslaw and a pickle. The pickle was really good and had a similar spicing and flavour to the meat which was very unique. All in all, a great experience! We also purchased some of the spices to take home.

Really really good smoked meat. I want to get the smoked plate next time I’m in Montreal. Service and Atmosphere was good. Only issue was sharing a table with another group but that is fine since we were in and out in 20 minutes or so. The server was very accommodating for the group beside us even during the chaos and rush from the long line forming in-front of the store.

Once we talked about Montreal, you cannot skip Schwartz’ Deli!!! Their smoked meat sandwich is AMAZING!!!!! A Montreal must try! It’s a bit hard to find a parking place but you can check out the back street behind the restaurant, plenty of parking spaces! And of course, it’s so tasty so prepare for a long line!!

I came here with high expectations and being a foodie I wanted to savor the famous smoked meat sandwich. The taste was fabulous, it had a perfect amount of spices and salt, right serving temperature and the portions are generous. But… for my taste the sandwich and the meat itself are a bit dry. When I was eating the last bites I was struggling to swallow because of the dryness. I went there on a rainy day and it was a 20 minutes line. We ate at the bar and it was difficult to enjoy our meal because the place was packed and there were always people behind us waiting in line to pay at the counter. From my point of view I think the place slightly overrated and you can find better smoked meat in Montreal without having to make a line or to be troubled by the cramped restaurant.

It was the very first place that we visited since coming to Montreal and it didn’t disappoint. The history and the reputation was warrants the price and the line in front of the deli. Descriptors like amazing, superb, incredible come to mind. Easily the best smoked meat I have ever had, damned great pickle and the coleslaw was unbelievable. Finally getting to eat here was worth the wait to have it with my wife and son. And the Black Cherry Cott soda beats any other brand in North America! Our server was patient and honest with us, his recommendation of number of sides was perfect! (I think the receipt said Giovanni was our server). One thing I do have to mention is the bread, it was great. Almost as good as Winnipeg 😉

Had high expectations and Schwartz's didn't disappoint! The smoked meat sandwich and pickle were undeniably delicious! I also enjoyed the poutine, though I would've preferred indulging in more of their smoked meat (noting that their portions were generous). The service was remarkable - smiles across the board with a great attitude! I'd simply recommend coming early as the queue can be daunting. That said, it's definitely worth the wait.

Almost like a New York experience with insanely thick corn beef deli sandwiches. Be prepared for long lines. It's the spot to get smoked meat. But other smoked meat shops around town have just as good tasting sandwiches. There they offer lean medium fat and lots of fat cuts for the sandwich. Also the pickle is really good. There are cheaper options in town though. Sat at the bar at 11am and at 11:45 it was full. There is a takeout option as well beside the dine in entrance.

The line might be long but it moves quickly. The traditional sliced beef sandwich with mustard is simple but delicious and the portions are very generous - come hungry and don't forget to order the pickle and cherry soda. Not sure if this is necessarily the best sliced meat sandwich in town, but definitely not one to be missed. Would come back again the next time we're in town.

Finally made it to Montreal to try these sandwiches. Two words: WORTH IT! Brisket that’s aged 13 days and cooked how you like it served on Rye bread - you decide if you’d like mustard on it (and you do). They suggest a cherry coke with it (again, yes you do). Fries are great, coleslaw is awesome and they have giant pickles as well. Poutine was just as good with the meat on top! It’s the only location there is, make sure you try it!!

Exceeded all my expectations, thought it would be hype and a tourist trap but was super legit. Definitely a must try when in Montreal. The smoked meat was so tender and juicy, not too salty. The sandwich was well balanced with bread and mustard. Only wished I got a second sandwich to save for later.

My wife and I had the smoked meat sandwich. It was very delicious and we enjoyed it. We were visiting Montreal in the weekend. Definitely try if you are in Montreal and haven’t tried it already. We will be coming back for more

We went around 2 pm on a Friday afternoon and had to wait in line for 10-15 min. We sat at the counter and ordered a big plate of smoked meat with bread, pickles and peppers. It was delicious and a great experience. I enjoyed sitting at the counter.

It was my first time back here in almost 10 years. Long line stretching out on St Laurent, even with the take out line. After patient waiting, I was ushered in for my chance to order their much celebrated smoked meat sandwich. After adding a can of Coke, tax and a 10% tip (for takeout!), the bill came to just over 20 bucks. "This had better be really, really good" I thought to myself. And you know what? It was really good. If you haven't had it before and you can eat meat, you need to go for it at least once.

My husband and I ordered 1 smoked meat sandwich to share but ordered another one because it was so GOOD! I also tried the 1/2 sour which is a half pickled cucumber. It was a good combo with the sandwich. Our waiter was also super friendly and outgoing which added to our good experience!

What’s better than an amazing plate full of smoked meat and some perfectly made poutine? Service that is kind, helpful, humorous, and professional. Our waiter was more than amazing and that was the mustard on the smoked meat! Definitely reminded me of Blooms! Thanks for the great nosh.

Went here for the first time despite being to the city many many times but always liked to go elsewhere (Main Deli RIP), but decided to finally give it a go. We luckily got there when there was no line (around 4:45 on a Sunday), so we were seated right away which was great. The place has VERY tight quarters so be aware of that when you go. Can’t say I’m a big fan of sitting at a cramped table with other diners but that’s just me and I guess it’s all part of the experience! As for the smoked meat, it was delicious! I like mine fatty and it was just that. We also got a side of fries which I was somewhat disappointed in compared to other fries I’ve had in the city. Overall it was a good meal, with quick service. While it isn’t my fave smoked meat, I’d likely go back when I’m in the city again but maybe for takeout instead.

This was a great experience, honestly I don't know the origin of the recipe of this amazing smoked meat that I had but it was very tasty, tender and juicy. ..the place itself was crowded and they make their guests share the tables to avoid queues.. we definitely can't consider it as a fine dining place. Additionally the place has an old style of decoration and not very neat. The staff are friendly and helpful. To conclude, Shwarz is a must do when in Montreal.

The best smoked meat in town! Been living in Montreal for 5 years and I've tried Smoked meat at every restaurant that I've been to that offers it but nothing else compares. Staff has always been super friendly with me. There is limited seating in the deli but they have a takeout side to the restaurant. If you want a more relaxed experience I suggest aiming for mid day on like monday. Or be ready to wait but it's worth it.

This place is an institution in Montreal. Expect lineups out the door at any time of day and an absolutely packed restaurant. This might be some of the best smoked meat I've ever had PERIOD. The sandwiches are packed with smoked meat and are served modestly on very good rye bread and minimally adorned with mustard, which is fantastic because it really features the excellently seasoned brisket. That's it. It's busy and they like to turn the tables over quickly so don't be surprised if they bring you the bill before you ask for it. Not a place to linger and chat for an hour after lunch. The dill pickles are massive and wonderfully garlicky. Make sure to stop by their store next door to pick up a pack to take home. I'll be back next time I'm in Montreal.

So good. If you're visiting you Montreal, you can't miss this place. Don't let the line and crowded inside deter you. They're super friendly inside and it's absolutely 100% worth the wait. Get the typical smoked meet sandwich on rye and get a smoked meat poutine for the table.

Lived up to the hype! I definitely recommend getting takeout since the line moves very quickly. The smoked meat sandwich is very loaded and ours was very juicy. (I've bought packaged Monreal smoked meat from them to warm up at home before and it's much drier; I definitely recommend the sandwich to go instead.)

Great service! Long line up but moves really fast! They have a great system working for them! The sandwich is worth the wait. Highly recommend this place!

The smoked beef is so tasteful.. if you eat at the same day, order the hot beef. Otherwise, get the cold one in the refrigerator. The takeout line was fast.

It is a 5-star rating on everything except for the fact the tiny space for a huge number of fans from all-over that crave the Montreal smoked meat they serve. No doubt the food is one of the best out there, but lining up (in sun and showers) hours? Of course, we love lining up but please, the people lines even interfere with the bus 🚌 stop a few steps away. Someone will get hurt sooner or later, and so I’ll just say it, open another store. Please!!! Okay, but it’s worth the wait and exposure to elements.

Best smoked meat I have ever tasted! The restaurant is extremely popular, so be prepared to wait to get in (we waited about 15 minutes). The sit-down area is arranged in long tables of 6, so be prepared to sit next to people you don’t know. Staff were friendly and spoke French and English. There is also a take-out only section, but we didn’t go there. I would highly recommend Schwartz’s to anyone visiting (or living) in Montreal. Their meat is truly phenomenal.

🫤 We came here to watch the Stanley cup final. The manager very kindly changed the screens to allow us to do so. Unfortunately, they played music instead and it was like being at a club. Not really a bar/restaurant atmosphere. Overall the waitress was extremely helpful and the food was ok. However, w...
