A fifteenth century fort that was established as a guard of the city at that time. The place was very important considering the security where the pirates used to attack Dhaka. Now, the place is a symbol of history and the government is taking care of it. Inside here, one pool and one museum are also located. A ticket is required to enter the area. The place is not quite large so 30 minutes is well enough to visit this full area. A digital camera is allowed here but sometimes you have to pay some extra money for this. But, cameras are not allowed inside the museum. Wheel chairs are accessible. Car parking facilities are not available separately but can be parked on the roadside.

Idrakpur fort is one of the most important and technically sound piece of craftsmanship archeological site of Bangladesh. Built by Mir Jumla by 1660 a.d., this place had a huge historical impact. This fort was build to keep pirates from attacking. The place is majestic as much as beautiful to view. The build style is very fine. A mixture of art and strategy.

Idrakpur Fort situated at Munshiganj proper, now on the west bank of the canal running through the town, and on the eastern vicinity of Deobhog village. This water fort was originally built at a strategic point on the junction of the river Ichhamati (now dried up) and the Meghna. The location of the fort had earlier been named as Idrakpur. The development of the township in the locality with the name Munshiganj is a later innovation. Still there is a village named Idrakpur in the suburb of the town. The surroundings of the fort are now filled with earth, and in some places the silt has risen up to the level of the parapet. The erection of the fort was intended to check the advance of the Magh and Portuguese pirates proceeding towards the Mughal capital city of Dhaka. It was probably built by the Mughal subadar Mir Jumla in about 1660 A.D. This brick built fort, quadrangular in size, runs from north to south measuring 86.87 meter in length and 59.60 meter in breadth. It consists of two main parts: i) the wider open area surrounded by curtain walls crowned by machicolated merlons, with engaged rounded corner bastions also crowned by merlons and pierced by musketry, and ii) the smaller area containing a round drum of huge dimension surrounded by another series of similar curtain walls. An approach to the drum is provided from the bigger court. The main entrance gate of the fort is on the north with a high rectangular bastion crowned by machicolated merlons which served as a guard room.

Idrakpur, now Munshiganj was a strategically very significant point as it was the junction of a number of rivers including Meghna River, Shitalakshya River, Ichhamati River and Dhaleshwari River.[3] The fort was built on the bank of the junction of Ichhamati River and Meghna River. The Portuguese and Magh pirates used this point to move forward to Dhaka through Shitalakshya River. On their way to Dhaka they used to loot other important cities like Sonargaon and Bikrampur.[4] Mir Jumla II was determined to protect Dhaka and eager to develop the wealthy area Bikrampur. So, he came up with a triangular defence strategy to protect the cities from the Portuguese pirates.[2] Idrakpur Fort was the centre of his strategy. The erection of the fort was intended to check the advance of the Magh and Portuguese pirates proceeding towards the Mughal capital city of Dhaka. The fort was also used as the naval base of the naval fleet of 200 frigates under Mughal admiral Abul Hossain.[2] According to the strategy, whenever the pirates made an attempt to advance to Dhaka the Mughal soldiers would be ordered to start firing mortars both from the cannons of their 200 battleships and from the Idrakpur Fort leaving the pirates with no options but to retreat or die on the rivers. However, if any of the pirate ships survived the initial attack and tried to advance to Dhaka the Sonakanda Fort and the Hajiganj Fort, situated on the eastern and western bank of Shitalakshya River respectively, would start throwing round-shots to those ships and vessels and sink all the pirate ships on the river.[1] It was probably built in about 1660 A.D.

In the heart of Munshiganj city, lies the historic Idrakpur Fort. Dating back to 1660 AD during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the fort was named Idrakpur Fort by Mir Jumla, a general and subedar of Bengal. The fort was built as a defensive structure in the area of Bikrampur to safeguard against the attacks of the Mughal pirates and the Portuguese. Interestingly, it is believed that there is a tunnel connecting this fort with the Lalbagh Fort in Dhaka. Compared to the Hajiganj and Sonakanda forts of Narayanganj, Idrakpur Fort is slightly smaller in size. However, it is regarded as a unique monument of Mughal architecture and was declared as such in 1909.

    - **A moment of tranquility**: A person enjoys the peaceful view of an ancient structure and its reflection at sunset. - **The beauty of history**: The setting sun casts a golden glow on an old structure, revealing its intricate details and creating a stunning reflection on the water. - **Reflections of the past**: A person sits on the steps of an old structure, contemplating the history and stories behind it, as the sun sets and the water mirrors the scene. - **Sunset at the old temple**: A person relaxes on the staircase of an old temple, surrounded by a lush garden and a calm lake, as the sun dips below the horizon.

Beautiful historical place. The responsible people also kept it clean. It can be seen that once this fort was the highest and all the rest were low. And now the fort has fallen down to build roads and houses.

Subedar Mir jumla Built idrakpur fort on 1660 a.d. at the same time Sonargaon fort in Narayongonj And Sonakanda fort in chandpur were built to protect pirates attacks in Bangla. Besides this,Poolgata bridge and kandapara bridge were built by Mir jumla. Poolgata pool is still exist. But kandapara bridge is no longer exist. Because of river breakdown. Thx

(Translated by Google) Idrakpur Fort ... Idrakpur fort in Munshiganj district is one of the four water forts built to protect Dhaka from external enemies. The fort, built during the Mughal period, is still intact after 300 and a half years. Munshiganj district belongs to ancient Bikrampur, the one-time capital and cultural center of south-east Bengal. It is a historical town located only 26 km south-east of the capital. Until the middle of the sixteenth century The name of this area was Idrakpur after the name of Idrakpur fort. Due to the permanent settlement of the British rule, the area came under the zamindari of Munshi Enayet Ali of Kazi Kasba village in Rampal. Since then it has been gradually renamed as Munshiganj. Padma, Meghna, Dhaleshwari, Ichhamati and Shitalakshya are the main rivers of the district. The six upazilas of the district with an area of about 955 sq km are Munshiganj Sadar, Tongibari, Srinagar, Louhjong, Gazaria and Sirajdikhan. Atij Dipankar, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Sarojini Naidu, Satyen Sen, Manik Bandyopadhyay, Buddhadev Bose, Samresh Bose, Shirshendu Mukherjee, Humayun Azad and many others were born in this district. This fort is located at Idrakpur in Munshiganj city. The Mughal subaddar Mir Jumla built the fort at Idrakpur in 160 AD on the banks of the old Ichhamati river in the present district headquarters. It is slightly smaller in size than the Hajiganj and Sonakanda forts in Narayanganj. The fort was built to protect other areas, including Dhaka and Narayanganj, from the attacks of the Mughals and Portuguese pirates. It is said that the fort was connected to the Lalbagh fort in Dhaka by a tunnel. There are many holes in the surrounding wall to shoot at the enemy from inside the fort. The Idrakpur fort was declared a protected antiquity in 1909 as a symbol of Mughal architecture in Bangladesh. Idrakpur Fort is a Mughal architecture located in Munshiganj town of Munshiganj district. Mir Jumla, subaddar and general of Bengal, built this fort in 160 AD at a place called Idrakpur on the west bank of the then Ichhamati river in the present Munshiganj district headquarters. The fort is slightly smaller in size than Hajiganj and Sonakanda forts in Narayanganj. 72 m × 62 m. This rectangular brick fort was built to protect the whole area including Dhaka and Narayanganj from the then Mughal pirates and Portuguese invasion. There is a rumor that this fort was connected with Dhaka's Lalbagh fort by a tunnel. There is a circular enclosure at every corner of this high walled fort. There are numerous quadrangular holes in the wall for firing at the enemy from inside the fort. In the middle of the east wall of the main wall is a circular platform 33 meters in diameter. Almost every fort had this system for monitoring the movement of the enemy from a distance. An additional wall surrounding this stage joins the main wall. It was built to strengthen the fort's defenses. Ichhamati, Dhaleshwari, Meghna and Shitalaksha rivers are located within three kilometers of the fort. The Idrakpur fort was declared a protected monument in 1909 as a unique masterpiece of Mughal architecture.

The place remains closed one hour for lunch. Better be there before 1:30pm or after 2:30pm for those who are traveling there from far.
