Areca hotel was reasonably priced and had a number of great amenities. The hotel had a lift, which was really convenient for getting around the building, and the water pressure in the bathroom was excellent, making for a refreshing shower experience. One of the best things about this hotel was that they provided a complimentary tea break, which was a nice touch and really added to the overall experience. It was great to be able to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea and a snack after a long day of exploring the nearby attractions. Speaking of the attractions, the location of this hotel couldn't be beat. It was within walking distance of all the major sights and landmarks, which made it really easy to get around and see everything we wanted to see. However, I will say that the limited parking availability was a bit of a downside. If you're planning to drive to the hotel, you may need to be prepared to park some distance away and walk to the hotel. That being said, it's a small inconvenience for all the other great things this hotel has to offer. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable, affordable place to stay with great amenities and a fantastic location.

Cos of an oversight, I had the opportunity to stay at two hotels during my recent trip to Penang - one of which was Areca Hotel Penang! Not my first visit to this beautiful island but definitely one of the best boutique hotel stays I've had here! I stayed in room 304 from 5th to 8th November 2022. Great experience! What I love about the hotel: the laid-back, Peranakan charm of the lobby and clean rooms with a comfortable bed! Plenty of spots to chill and reflect on life around the hotel or take photos. The front-desk managers were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and professional. They even called to ask if everything is okay after we checked into our room. There's even a fan in the room which really helps to cool the room quickly. Toilet is rather small tho and there were some stains in the towels given to us. Locational-wise, walkable (like less than 5mins) to various popular food joints and malls e.g. Hutton roti bakar is just behind the hotel and you can also walk over for supper as there are stalls selling roti canai at night; Penang Street Chendol, Ming Xiang Tai Pastry, Chowrasta Market, Toh Soon Cafe, etc. Easy to obtain Grab rides to anywhere too. No need to bring your own toiletries as it's all - including room slippers - provided. There's an elevator in the hotel which is a huge plus point! If you are concerned about noise, you can consider requesting for rooms 303, 304, 305 which are located on the second level and away from the hotel's cafe as well as a place of worship. We didn't have any issues with noise... we can't really hear much once the door is closed. The hotel provides complimentary daily high tea for all hotel guests from 3pm to 5pm, which is nice of them, just don't have high expectations... the food are just light snacks like sandwiches, biscuits, canned fruit, french fries, coffee and tea. Would be better if they serve more authentic local stuffs like kueh kueh, traditional pastries, and desserts.

Multiple weeks spent here in May 2023. Room was a top floor spacious room with a king size bed with lots of pillows. Lots of staff serving the hotel and they were frequently cleaning the common areas while another crew cleaned the guest rooms. Everything was well maintained and kept neat and tidy. I appreciated the 24 hour front desk staffing and they all spoke English. Each room has its own temperature control unit and you adjust it to your liking. Hot water in the shower and sink was never a problem. Hotel is on a quiet, one block long, one-way street so I didn’t notice any continuous traffic noise. The hotel is in easy walking distance to the core of UNESCO Heritage Georgetown and there are many, many food stalls and restaurants and market places within a ten minute walk Komtar is a five minute walk away. The Rapid Penang free CAT bus has a stop one block away. Great place to stay and highly recommend Areca especially if this is your first visit to Georgetown. The Areca Hotel YouTube video provides an honest introduction and tour of the hotel.

great staff, very helpful and polite! the old-style fashion of the building is lovely but the room in not so comfortable.. no noise insulation and poor thermal insulation.. the aircon was working hard to keep the room temp acceptable. in the morning you can hear every other guest waking up, having shower, chatting in the hallway and even the voice and traffic from outside. nice place, but won t come back

Property was beautiful and well decorated as a conserved shophouse. Beds and pillows were surprisingly comfortable. It was lovely that they provided refreshing iced water at the lobby for the very hot Penang days. However, the amenities were minimal - they provided 2 in 1 hair and body soap. Toilets required slightly steep stairs to access so try to get a accessible room if you’re booking. Power points were not particularly accessible in the room. The most jarring issue is having to find my luggage lock fiddled with after the room was cleaned. So beware with your valuables when you leave the room!

Stayed here for 1 night in the heritage room which was bigger than the garden room. We requested the staff to show us both the room and decided that the garden room was too small for our liking and we opt for the next available option. There is a complementary tea time snacks but need to have checked in before 5pm to enjoy this privilege. Parking can be a little challenging because it's public parking by the road side. Suitable for those looking for heritage staycation.

Great location and affordable hotel. Heritage furnishings gave the building a very different feeling. Location was very accessible with many attractions within 10 mins grab ride. Can also ride to airport or main island in about 30 minutes. Service was welcoming and attentive. Room was huge. Stay comes with free afternoon snacks and coffee/tea at their restaurant Only downside was hotel was very near to a mosque, and everyday at 616am the prayers would start loudly and go on about 10 minutes. There were prayers around 8pm too (not sure if prayers were more than twice daily as we were out in the day) To get to the toilet there is a steep flight of stairs so need to be careful. Toiletries were minimal but workable. The 2 in 1 shampoo and body wash was hoisted on a tall rack which was a bit high to reach. The rack to hang towels was too high too - hope the design can be more ergonomic

everything was just amazing at this hotel. The rooms, the location and the services provided were all outstanding especially for the price. It's got a great location that's not exactly in the middle of all the busy all night bars but a short walking distance. I love the fact that the bus stop and the food options are all so close. The rooms were very nice and had a nice historical feel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and always said hey when we passed the reception. The thing that tops everything off was the inclusion of a daily afternoon tea - everyday there was a slightly different selection of Penang snacks to try which was such an amazing experience. Heavily recommended, and definitely a great option when we return to penang to.

This place is fine. Not great though, especially considering how expensive it is. The room is large, but strangely played out. The bathrooms small and smelly. The plug sockets are poorly and inconveniently placed. The building itself though is quite nice, and the location is good, except that the wedding venue across the street makes for some very noisy evenings. For €130+ you’d expect more.

Old building which was internally refurbed. The beds are comfortable and everything is clean. Breakfast is good, but nothing special. We upgraded our room because before we got a tiny tiny room, no place to even open the suitcases; so make sure to book the right room; the second room was big enough but also not perfect. It had just tiny windows so there was no daylight and the ac was directed straight to the bed so it was a constant battle between to cold when you turned the ac on and to warm when we turned it off … the location is good because you can walk everywhere in the city

I love the stay here. Staffs were really helpful. Located at the heart of Georgetown. Near all the attraction places. Room is so spacious for family suite. Good food at hotel cafe. Except for the parking lot, quite struggle to find. Overall it is nice to stay here.

The staff at this property are all great! Please give your staff awards. The bed was comfortable. The vintage aesthetics were awesome. Superb location. However there was light coming from the outside made it hard to get a good sleep. The room was clean but small for the price. Breakfast was not great. For that price should get a bigger room and better breakfast

Very good service, hospitality like friends take care friends. Clean room and very convenient to access the attraction point. Applause to the gorgeous unique decoration& beautiful furniture. As it is classic doors and windows therefore they are not sound proof and you will heard a noisy chit chat in the morning. If you have a good ears ,bring ear plug could help you to wake up a little more late.

Great and warm service from hotel staff. Superb location, the included breakfast was not bad, big portion. Our stay was great! It would be better if there is smart TV for more entertainment option and it could be challenging to find a parking during the day / high peak season. Thank you again for such lovely experience!

What I love about the hotel: the warm and inviting, Peranakan-style decoration of the lobby and clean rooms with comfortable beds! Plenty of areas to chill and reflect on life as well as Instagrammable spots around the hotel. The front-desk managers were friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and professional. They even called to ask if everything is okay after we checked into our room. There's a fan - on top of air-con - in the room which really helps to cool the room quickly and is a God-send in the tropical, humid island weather! However, the toilet is a little small and tight and there were some stains in the towels given to us on one of the days. There were also some signs of wear and tear. Locational-wise, walkable (like less than 5mins) to various popular food joints and malls e.g. Hutton roti bakar, Famous Laksa, Penang Street Chendol, Ming Xiang Tai Pastry, Chowrasta Market, Toh Soon Cafe, Hema Hema Ice Cream, Chulia Street, etc. No need to bring your own toiletries as it's all provided including room slippers. There's an elevator in the hotel which is a huge plus point if you have big luggages. If you are concerned about noise, you can consider requesting for rooms 303, 304, 305 which are located on the second level and away from the hotel's cafe as well as a place of worship. We didn't have any issues with noise... we can't really hear much once the door is closed. The hotel provides complimentary daily high tea for all hotel guests from 3pm to 5pm. Overall, a pleasant hotel that is strategically located yet still retain its peacefulness for a comfortable stay!

Wonderful amazing team of staff ever ready to serve with a big smile. Cafe staff was very welcoming too. Truly a pleasant 3 nights stay in room 207 with high efficiency of service. Ambience is cool and location is superb, easily accessible to food bazaars and malls. Thumbs up for the GREAT team! Will come back again. Thanks to all.

Overall pleasant; but I think there may be better options around. Rooms open up to a central courtyard which can be noisy. There may also be a slight mosquito problem especially at the outdoor area of the dining, which also at times can detect a faint sewage smell. Hotel should consider vegetation to mask this.

I love this hotel! I love the vibes, the surrounding, everything! Staff is friendly, explained my question well. We got complimentary tea time and it was good! Breakfast also delicious even it is not buffet one. Garden room is a bit compact, but everything I need are there. The hotel is walking distance to Line Clear Nasi Kandar and you can wandering around to discover other restaurants and attractions as well. is very good. Room is spacious. Suitable for family with kids. The design and decoration was unique and aesthetic. Convinient store just beside the establishment. Staying in a room with view very nice. Didn't get the time to try the pools and breakfast buffet. Overall very nice room.

4.5 stars! The hotel is located perfectly in Georgetown,Penang. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We had breakfast included in and the pancakes were so good. The rooms were very comfortable and good ac and ceiling fan. There is a sitting area which is really nice to sit or have some famous Cendol. The only remark is the doors are not sound proof so you may hear some noise in the hall wall from time to time but you don’t hear anything from the rooms next door. If you are visiting Georgetown, come here!

Good comfortable stay for 5 nights. Friendly staff, only tip I’d say is please do make guests aware of the complementary laundry service in advance. It’s something we’d have used but didn’t realise until checkout! Thank you for a nice stay

I stayed here in 2019 and enjoyed my stay on all levels: the room, the staff, the breakfast. I am now staying in 2023. Very different. The checkin person was not at all welcoming. When I asked her where I could find Hawker Street Food (for which Penang is famous) she said I'd need to walk about 15 minutes. I went for a walk and found Kimberley Street... 2 minutes from the hotel ... where there is AMAZING Hawker Street Food. Why did the receptionist not mention this? I stayed in a Garden Room which is very small. The ceiling fan has only one speed .. fast ... so it's hard to sleep with it on. The air-conditioning is very noisy. I would recommend staying in the bigger Heritage Room. The service in the restaurant for breakfast was so so. Again unwelcoming. I recommend not bothering with the breakfast. There are plenty of eating places to choose from outside at a fraction of the price. Has the hotel new owners? The location is AMAZING though. Would I stay there again? Absolutely, but next time in a Heritage Room and without breakfast.

Stayed in the heritage room for a night. Good location with walking distances to Komtar. Friendly receptionist and room was spacious and clean. A bit of colonial styled interior. The bathroom had good heater and water pressure. Was little disappointed with the breakfast the next morning, nasi lemak was way off the mark. Not something you would expect with Penang standards. Otherwise its a wonderful place to stay.

Pros - staff were very hospitable and accommodating towards our requests - no one-use soap bottles were provided. Soap was provided in a wall mounted and reusable bottle. Kudos! - complimentary and yummy tea and snacks provided every day - very clean Cons - wifi was not reliable so working was difficult - outside walls were thin so we could hear neighbours in the walkway chatting and opening their doors. This woke me up when they got noisy. Overall: would recommend!

  • 4/5 Elizabeth S. 7 months ago on Google
Hotel service and food were great. A bit pricey though. Being in Georgetown has its drawbacks. It can be noisy and soundproofing isn’t great in these older style shophouses. The upstairs rooms with two beds on the top floor had better maintained rooms than the ground floor room that I stayed at. You’ll still hear the mosque each morning.

  • 5/5 Philip N. 9 months ago on Google
We had booked one night here while escaping from a very bad hotel we didn't want to stay at. The reception staff was very courteous, helpful, and went out of his way to help us. The room was clean, well presented. It has the old house charm on the outside and modern renovated amenities on the inside. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others while in Penang.

The location is good and walkable to nearby attractions. We drove there but there are no parking facilities. Have to compete with the cars along the public road outside the hotel and had to jump a few loops to pay through the app.

Love the vibes! The first room I stayed in (forgot about the room name but it was in 2nd floor) was spacious, clean and has big wardrobe, cabinet which guests can comfortably use. There is also sofa, tv (sadly not android tv), hair dryer and iron to use :) the second room moved to in 1st floor aslo a good room stay, smaller but still has some facility to use. Smaller wardrobe, cabinet but still worth it.

I think this heritage hotel is one of the best hotel in penang. The room so spacious. The location so strategic near the best spot for kuliner. Near komtar. There so many bus route around hotel. We got fre afternoon tea and the ice cream so delicious. FYI the staff is helpfull

Pros: - exceptional, located minutes away from so many delicious food e.g. Penang road famous laksa, koay teow and chendol, roti canai at the store right behind the hotel was great too - good location to easily grab to other place during rainy days, further food places can also reach in 5-10mins walk - very friendly and amiable staff, made the stay enjoyable :) - allow storage of bags before check in time and after checkout time - clean beds :) Cons: - room floor cleanliness is slightly questionable- still have some hair lingering from prev guests when we checked in, though floor was cleaned the next day~ - lots of mosquitoes in the room & toilet - thin walls, alright since there’s barely any guests walking during the night

For a hotel, this awesome boutique hotel is so stunning. The feel is like staying at a wealthy family's palatial home, which it was formerly. The ambiance is calm, and quiet. The long corridor with plants and seats is great to relax in after a day of exploring the UNESCO Georgetown. Walking distance to Chowrasta Market, famous Cendol, historical mosques and retail therapy like Prangin Mall Komtar. The team at Areca is wonderful. Hospitality as it should be, warm and friendly. Will definitely return to stay.

We stayed in the family suite with two queen beds. Beds are comfy, the room is clean. We just parked at the parking space near the hotel. Parking can be a problem if there’s a function at Majestic opposite the hotel. Walking distance to malls, restaurants and food stalls at Penang road. Hotel staff is friendly and helpful👍 The hotel provides complimentary one small bottle of water per person. Subsequently, additional bottle is chargeable at RM2.

Stayed here over the Christmas weekend. Front desk staff greeted us every time. Small room on the highest floor. The air-conditioning wasn't working very well. Luckily I was fine with it. Wonderful historic building. Beautiful space. Rooms are nicely decorated in a traditional style that suits the building. We had a garden room but would chose a larger if we stayed again as it was a bit tight. Lovely, free afternoon tea with plenty of sweet and savoury snacks. Staff were all so helpful. Cannot say enough good things about this hotel. If you're looking for an interesting breakfast option, there is a roti baker right next door in Hutton Lane ... line-ups can be long on a weekend morning but they do good roti canai.

In the historical building, they have manage to create a hotel with a nice colonial feeling, with great artifacts and tiles. The room i stayed inn are at ground level inside the inside garden. The room is big with a good bed, and delicate bathroom. In the room there are a safe to put your belongings in, a fridge not filled but you can fill it yourself, TV with some international news station, a bed (King Size) that are very comfortable. They serve breakfast everyday, from a menu of standard dishes. They have fresh fruits and juice. Instead of ordering a plate, I did order some items instead. That was nice that they could do that. Everyday the serve afternoon Thea, with some to nibbling on beside a nice thea The staff is always in a good mood, and smiles and say hello to you, when you arrive og come back to the hotel. I feel very welcoming here I'll stay here again when I return to Penang

An excellent boutique hotel for your getaway in Penang and Georgetown in particular. Located at the heart of Georgetown, with great tourist spots in just walking distance. The hotel is situated just next to the Penang Police Station; thus reassuring safety and security. Their rooms are fantastic! Very welcoming ambience; and I personally love their shower gel — with refreshing scent of nutmeg! Although rated as a 3-star hotel, surprisingly the service and amenities are 5-star! In addition, the hotel’s coffee shop serves delicious food ( the Nasi Goreng is fantastic!) and drinks — all within reasonable prices. Cheers to Areca and all the staff!
