The previous reviews are very accurate. Thin walls yes so don't stay there and act surprised. It is a classic place. Great service, clean and safe. If you are looking for a reasonable price and don't need much amenities it's perfect. I'm never in the room much anyway and it's a 12 minute walk to Chinatown or the wharf

Absolutely fun hotel to stay in. I've never used a water closet before or had shared bathrooms so it was a cool little experience. They have a lot of posters, letters or just general things hung up showing some of the history of San Francisco. There are some good books you can find on their shelves and they have such quaint little seating places. The rooms have no TV or fridge but that is 100% expected with the smaller room sizes and when this hotel was built. The only downside for me was the wifi was spotty, slow or just sometimes cut out.

Old vibes, it feels like traveling in time and living the 1900s. I loved it for sure. The rooms and halls are super clean and it smells wonderful. My room had a view of downtown towers and it was always clean. One thing to keep in mind is that bathrooms and showers are outside rooms, kind of communal. However, I always found them available and super clean. The front desk is friendly and there is complimentary coffee drinks (machine) 7am to 1 pm as well as a microwave. The location is prime and totally worth the price. Loved my stay over here. One thing I wish I had better is thicker covers to keep me warm at night especially because I stayed during late December.

I want to start by saying the staff at the front desk were super friendly. The building itself is interesting and funky, and the design of the rooms was throwback in a charming way. But the reason my overall rating is middling is related to value for the price. The room was almost $400 including tax, and was quite small, with not very comfortable bed, very uncomfortable pillows, and all the bedding had a chemical detergent smell that was a bit overpowering. Combine these details with the shared bathroom situation, and it's pretty hard to recommend. But I'll end by saying once again that the gentleman at reception was very welcoming. Obviously I'm in a minority in my opinion here, based on the overall ratings so I suggest you consider my data point along with all the others.

This hotel is really well situated with Fisherman's Wharf within walking distance. Room was clean, shared bathrooms were also clean. Service was friendly and excellent. Free coffee and water provided. Lots of history and a very unique feel in this hotel.

Stayed for 4 nights with family - 2 rooms. You won’t find a better price and friendlier front desk staff. The rooms are tiny - don’t expect more than to have a place to sleep. The coffee machine is awesome and there’s actually plenty of bathrooms and showers between the 2 floors. Everything was well supplied and clean. We spent a lot of time at pier 39, which was just a short walk. Oh and Try the Italian restaurant next door as well. Very good food.

Can there be more than 5 stars for the location part? This hotel is everything you need and absolutely nothing more. I loved stepping back through time in a true to the early 1900 style of hotel. Be aware, shred bathrooms means shared bathrooms and showers. You’re not sharing it with one room but with a whole hotel, yet they were always clean and available. The bedrooms are snug to small, but there are plenty of outlets to charge your devices. Loved my stay

Loved staying here! The hotel is so cool and like stepping into a time capsule. The bathrooms were so unique and very clean. Our room was so cozy and our bed was so comfy. The guy at the front desk is so nice and so helpful! The neighborhood is great and so close to great restaurants and cafes. Definitely had some paranormal experiences as well. We will be back!!

For the age of the place it's very well preserved and doesn't feel tired or run down. Everything is clean and the interior makes great use of natural light and plants. Though the rooms are a bit small and there are no sinks or toilets inside as per the original design of the building, all in all it's a great place!

It was an overall good experience. The hotel is nestalgic and full of memorabilia with pictures of SF. The bathroom and shower facilities were taken care of. The only downside of the locatio is not a good area, was told to park my car away from the hotel. I had to park my car four blocks closer to pier 39 and yet to put it nicely, there were several peeps yelling at random things two cars down, and one looked high af.

I don't know why people give good review but the hotel was total dissapointment. The room is so small not even one person can fit. Why do one need to compromise so much for such high price. Just because it is old, why one sacrifice comfort, bathroom, fridge, AC..no lift..not ventilated.. Not maintained. On top of that no vintage cars as mentioned. Good bye

Very interesting stay. Super cool that it’s historic and the charm is unquestionable. However, the air went out while we were there in September and our room was sooooooo hot. Didn’t actually really take photos of the hotel but us in our room. The rooms are small but it was perfect for just the two of us. The shared bathroom and showers was an adventure. It felt weird walking around in my pajamas. Definitely recommend bringing slippers for easier ability to walk around at night.

This is my fourth time staying here. I absolutely loved it in the past. I loved that it felt like I had stepped back in time. However, this trip I was given the worst room possible. Not only is it located right beside a toilet but it backs onto the wall of a restaurant kitchen. The night was filled with constant banging and washing dishes up til around 11pm. Then the morning is a parade of people using the bathroom from 5am. This room is where you banish people who've been nasty. No idea what I did to deserve this room. Oh, and the door sticks. I thought I was going to be stuck inside.

Very disappointed ☹️, I saw the almost 5 stars so I booked a room there, horrible experience, the bed too small for two people very old mattress, share bathroom omg the toilets stinks so bad plus you have to pay parking 30 to 36 per night and not close buy if you have disabilities forget it the “hotel” have no elevator never again. I couldn’t open the reviews to read anything I just saw 41/2 stars and the price wasn’t bad so please read everything before you book here and make sure you understand everything. Aaahhh I forgot to mention that we only spent one night there , we booked in another hotel and left this one right away.

Hotel is well situated, a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf. For it's location the price is good and we stayed for 3 nights but that was enough. The place is quirky, shared toilets, showers and sinks not a real problem, (and they are kept clean), makes it feel like a hostel. However, on arrival there is a staircase from the street level that you have to lug your suitcase up as there is no lift and our assigned twin room was extremely small. Spent the 3 days constantly lifting my heavy case onto my bed in order to get to my clothes and there was hardly room to swing a cat with two of us in the room at the same time. Carpets look like they could do with a clean. Complimentary tea and coffee was only available from the vending machine from 7am to 1pm so if you woke up early due to jet lag or early start - tough luck. Suggest you bring flip-flops to wear when going from shower to bedroom.

Seriously one of THE COOLEST hotels I have ever stayed in. The entire place has an almost Victorian style charm an atmosphere that I’ve never experienced before in a hotel. It feels like I went back in time 150 years. Not to mention, the whole place is in a great location, very peaceful on the inside, fantastic rooms, and has all the amenities of a normal hotel, including a bath with great views. I would highly suggest this hotel over your run-of-the-mill regular hotel or motel. Would definitely come again! 10/10! 🏆🥇

Was a favorite before the shut down, excited to see it back. Folks that complain of the small rooms must not have very good visual interpretation skills, that’s not a fact that is hidden. We all know the standard sizes of American beds. Then you can see there isn’t much room remaining.

This hotel has such character and charm. Yes the bathrooms are shared (but always clean and a lovely vintage design), and I’m not sure if all of the rooms have sinks- ours didn’t- and there’s a slight smell from the carpets in some areas as they’re rather old, but the thing that stands out here are the staff. They’re so welcoming and have all kinds of tips about San Francisco. There’s also free coffee from 7-13, but the overnight guy on reception unlocked the machine at 6 so we could have one before our flight. Plus it’s a bargain in a brilliant location on the edge of North Beach- we easily walked down to Fisherman’s Wharf for the Alcatraz ferry. Definitely recommend!

Quirky hotel in perfect downtown San Francisco location!! Within walking distance of Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. Small rooms offered due to age of building (constructed in 1906) with shared baths, but the charm and convenience rules!!! Good italian restaurant on-site with a Trader Joe's one block away.

Can’t beat the price. Close to many hot spots to visit. Hotel is older and small. But that was the appeal. In a world of massive, cookie cutter hotels, this was an interesting change. Felt like a college dorm room. My goal was to explore the city, not stay in the room all day. So location was key and this had a great one. We walked to fisherman wharf, China town, Union square, pacific heights, and bars on Columbus st. We tend to walk quite a bit so if you’re up to it, the location is great. Parking is terrible, like everywhere in San Fran. We found a garage on Union st and powell. $40 overnight. It was manned and they had gates. Felt safer than street parking, which is impossible to find without a pass. Overall it’s a unique, simple hotel that meets your needs if you need a place to stay. Won’t have the amenities of the big hotels but you can’t beat the price. And it’s a cool experience to tell your friends about

Simply fantastic. The staff are super nice and helpful, the room was cozy but great. The bathroom and shower are shared, which is certainly an inconvenience, but that adds to the charm of the place and helps bring the price down I'm sure. The room had a sink, which was extremely convenient for brushing teeth, etc.

Mother-daughter trip-felt safe walking in the area at night. Perfect location to walk to North Beach. The cable car stops behind the hotel. They had just set up a new cappuccino machine in the lobby or there's Pat's Cafe right around the corner that had great breakfast. Beauty amenities such as cotton swabs, q-tips, shampoo & conditioner. Wifi worked well. Cozy rooms. Friendly and helpful staff. Fellow travelers respected the quiet time so we got a good night's rest. Staying there again for a future trip.

Stayed for 1 night but this place is absolutely brilliant! Friendly staff and good price and location. My room was small but perfect for just me. My absolute favourite thing was the original features and age of the place, a real treasure! Would highly recommend for a slice of San Francisco history. :)

One of my favorites hotels of all time. The rooms are small, you don't have a private bathroom. Don't have breakfast. But there's free water with lemon and they help you with anything you need. The location is great. And the decorations are fabulous. So you want a Cheap hotel in San Francisco you found it.
