BEWARE!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!! We checked in everything was fine until we go upstairs. PEOPLE LIVE IN HERE LIKE THEY ARE APARTMENTS. It had a weird smell. Thereā€™s no Ac at all. The walls are so thin. Our first night they were playing loud music until 3am. A fight happened outside of our door they were screaming and crying and the owners and managers did nothing someone else had to call the cops. The shower curtains are black at the bottom we pulled back our covers and a huge orange stain on the bed. You have to share a bathroom and shower with everyone the people that live there arenā€™t clean. Then the next day the owners kicked someone out and just left all of their belongings outside of the door.

We stayed 3 nights but were tempted to leave after 5 minutes of walking in our room. The room was small for four people and the bathroom door was half blocked by one of the beds. In my opinion this was not a big deal. The main issue was the sheets and pillows all stained with what I hope was wine (pics attached). Even the lamp was stained. How is it possible? Luckily when we asked the manager, he tried to give us different sheets and pillowcases, but we had to choose between the less stained ones... The hotel zone is the worst in the city: homeless people and drug addicts camped out on the side streets, often shouting and making a mess. It's not a safe place. I never leave bad reviews because I'd rather celebrate good places than criticize bad ones. In this case I really hope this helps someone: spend that extra 50 or 100$ and go to a better place.

DO NOT CHOOSE if you want to stay in a comfortable hotel. Staffs are not friendly. Bathroom is not clean at all. And I can't really stand the smell. This is the worst hotel I ever stayed.

The hotel is very nice, good service and nice rooms. Furthermore, it is located in a cosmopolitan neighbourhood. You can have nice chatting with local people 24/7 and get some lovely stories about the opioid history in the USA. Additionally, you can get free sandwiches and condoms in the street, so all you need it's there. I came with all my family, and specially the kids enjoyed the life changing experience, I don't need to worry anymore about them taking drugs.

The whole area is surrounded by homeless people, The hotel outside of the room is very clean but as soon as we go into our room and pulled back the covers we found Cigarette holes in the sheets and stains all over them. Later that night we found a cockroach in our room and we notice there is no fire alarm in the rooms. The next night we found another cockroach in the room. Towels are the size of kitchen towels those are the size I expect you to take showers with.

The Bay hotel encompassed a single brown door which had many friendly neighbourhood crackheads. If you like the smell of the naughty stuff this is the place for you. They said breakfast was included with the stay and I must say a stunning 2 broken toasters made the entire kitchen. We also had a lovely neighbour whom thought to himself it is okay to play his awful DJ music at full blast at around 11:30 at night. With the walls built like Chase Baldiā€™s muscle we heard every last part of the woeful tune until he had enough. Thank god! The only bonus of this was the they showed Premier League games on TV. The would have had two stars had it not been for a peculiar interaction with this bloke on the front desk. Donā€™t even ask, it was like talking to Jackson Scope.

Positives.....it's in Central SF, you can lock your door, the door from the street is locked, bedding and room was clean, there was a water dispenser in reception, my electronic key worked, it was cheap for SF, near to a whole foods, fridge and microwave in room (but no crockery or cutlery), communal bathrooms cleaned (but it only takes one person to leave it dirty), toiletries provided. . Negatives....I was woken at 3am with water coming in the light fitting, dripping due to rain, it flooded the floor, I had to move rooms, no refund offered, breakfast was the worst I've ever had anywhere, the heating didn't work and it was cold, I did ask about this, the TV didn't work, I did ask about this, the bed base was extremely dirty, "breakfast" was never ready at 8am while I was there, very close to the civic centre area where the homeless gather, not in a nice area, noisy street, very little soundproofing in rooms so can hear room next door, cup with mould in on outside windowsill with cigarette butts, clearly never cleaned (above street level). When I woke reception to say about the flood in the room, he responded as if it was a nuisance to him, rolling his eyes, not the type of response I would expect from any hotel.

On the outside it looks like an abandoned SRO but when you get inside, the place is spotless, the rooms are smallish and the bathroom is a beautiful place to take care of hygiene, and despite being on the edge of the tenderloin and next to a rundown SRO, it's absolutely peaceful and quiet! Again it's a pleasant surprise when you get inside. And the beds are high and very comfortable and cozy!

Arrived at 3am and it was no problem getting checked in, two nights for $90 is rock bottom. There are steep stairs, so either be in shape or plan to get in shape while there. And, don't bother with a lot of luggage. If you like loud booming of speakers and sounds of the wild side, definitely get the window overlooking Jones. Tents are lined up, and some homeless have none unfortunately. Otherwise, the stay was fine, rooms fairly clean. There was a light bulb missing near the bed so the only lighting was from bright overhead lights. We didn't bother to get it fixed for such a short visit. The lovely girl in the photos was named Cici..I asked.

Hey, know what you are getting when you book. Sure, they have shared bathrooms in the heart of tenderloin, but the price is fantastic. I wasn't expecting much but my room was clean, the bathrooms stayed clean, the front desk was nice and helpful, and there was even a very small breakfast of sorts. What more could you ask for? It may not be a Hilton, but as far as a cheap hotel for the night if you are going to the Warfield for a show or something? Perfect. Would stay here again no problem.

I just got here and I am already ready to leave. The sheets are dirty, there is no a/c, outlets and fridge don't work, and the block is full of homeless people hanging out front harassing everyone walking past. I've stayed at plenty of bargain places in the past so I did not come expecting the Hilton. But they can't even get the bare basics down which is really all that I ask for.

Positive experience itā€™s true I have seen a lot of great deals in my day like the grocery stores are near to front door and looks pretty good for the price! Itā€™s so authentically excusable and treating the house fair to take away the value of the housekeeping that covers everybodyā€™s needs equal pay and labor rights must represent the burning desires in us to contribute and understand leaving or time when you pass all the rooms and I love this Bay Hotel. Something is wrong and everybody knows itā€™s a peaceful protest and grab your backpack or your bicycle itā€™s time to come back to San Francisco and go places. Itā€™s a nice stop and housekeeping pleases everybody working hard to maintain and keep an eye out for problems that we donā€™t like. They are good people and donā€™t believe in goodbyes itā€™s a breakfast thatā€™s been used to supply the finest breakfast cuisines and milk and cereals and orange juice and toast and jam. Rooming share or room/share support when in need very old fashioned and hospitable food and conversation!

Super good option if you want something super cheap, close to restaurants or clothing stores and bus stops. My friend and I stayed at Bay Hotel for almost 1 week and we recommend it, breakfast 5/5 (something basic), the reception is very friendly. It is true that there are many homeless people but that happens throughout SF, in the time we stayed we mobilized walking until 10pm with tranquility but a lot of homeless people (everywhere) but it is part of the same city. Totally recommended, I would stay there again.

I booked a room on Expedia for $80 because the photos looked nice, when I got there it was actually really sketchy. You canā€™t just walk in the front either you have to ring a door bell and wait for someone to let you in. I was scared to stand out there alone with all my luggage because there was so many junkies camped outside. Iā€™m not from a nice area either so a few crackheads donā€™t normally deter me, but this was another level. And now the rooms are posted for $30, When I paid $80..I never would have booked a $30 room as a woman traveling alone. I asked for a refund and was refused multiple times so Iā€™m just paying for two hotels tonight I guess so I could feel safe

i had originally rated this place 4 stars but i have since changed my review i did the 250 dollar deposit for the room and have not received it back. i have emailed and called but they say they have sent it and to check my statement, pretty upsetting. Definitely beware when using your debit card for a deposit.

This is in my opinion the best cheap hotel in the Tenderloin. It is kept very clean with wood floors, plenty of space in the rooms, smart TV, microwave, and fridge. Great place to stay.

Lovely little place for the price. Free breakfast is good and the staff is friendly! I appreciated the toiletries the room came with. I would come here again.

Detectors and carbon monoxide detectors were ripped out of the wall, leaving loose wires hanging. There were cigarette Burns in the duvet, and an odd smell around the hotel in general. However, check-in was easy, there was a buzzed in entry which led to a sense of safety, and the room came with a fridge and microwave which was a nice perk. You have to pay extra for a private bathroom, and while the location is centrally located it is a bit sketchy.

Not too bad a hostel style hotel. The bed wasn't bad but I did find a dude screaming in the middle of the night and causing a visit from the police. Bathrooms are super clean, shared. Dense homeless population in the general location.

I stayed here for more than a week..im new to the area and didnt know theres homeless problem there but so far all good as long as you pay attention to your surrounding. The room is fine for the price you pay, the receptions they are all friendly and accomodating. But just very very dissapointed with cleaning lady, I think she is latina with long hair I dont know her name, but she is very rude. I put a sign that my room needs to be cleaned and when I came back she put the sign to be ā€œnot disturbā€ and I put the sign back to ā€œPlease clean my roomā€ and she yelled at me and said ā€œ I just did it yesterday, you want me to clean your room everyday? Iā€™m leavingā€ very unprofesional and rude. The old cleaning couples they are super nice and friendly only that girl is so rude and unprofesional. if you can train all of your staff better it will be pleasant. I like your place so far thats why im writing this review so you can make your place better.

if you want to stay in the dirtiest place so go ahead and do so. we got a dirty room, towels were on the floor. pillows and mattresses, and the sheets were in dirt. shared bathroom? another disaster, out of paper sheets. Never get cleaned during 3 days of stay. i absolutely do not recommend this place.

Outstanding customer service! We had to get a room because water flooded our place, and funds were short. We called around but settled on The Bay. Out of the bargain hotels in the Tenderloin, The Bay rises to the top of the competition. It's not even fair to call it a bargain hotel, because it's a solid 3 star hotel. Everything was clean and new. Not the best views but for a clean, quiet place to rest, you couldn't ask for anything more. Also, I'd like to give kudos to the gentlemen who manages the hotel. He was a gracious and responsive host, and made our stay that much more enjoyable. Kudos.

Value for money deal, they serve complimentary breakfast as well. The rooms were neat and clean.

They seem to always have availability and the service is professional and quick. There's not a lot of hassle when you go check in and they don't bother you while your there. Surprisingly you think it would be loud because it's right in the tenderloin but it's actually dang near soundproof.

Where to start. When I booked this hotel I read no reviews as my trip was a last minute change. When I did read the reviews before departing I was pretty worried. But letā€™s clear somethings up, imo the hotel is clean however it is in desperate need of updating and decorating. The room was a good size and fine for me, it had a tv with satellite, a fridge and microwave which all worked and the shower was good also. The bed was too soft for my liking but not a problem. Breakfast was poor but the staff are well aware of this, the coffee was terrible, it was cold and weak. The croissants were ok though, I gave everything else a wide birth. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They are also desperate to get tourists through and are trying their hardest to change the hotelā€™s image. The area is the Tenderloin district which is well known for its high crime rate, drugs and homeless problems (something out of the hotels hands). But, San Francisco as a whole has a serious homeless situation. There were no homeless camping outside the hotel, there are encampments a few blocks down though and the area was noisy of a night. The homeless are not a problem for me and the comments about them are vile, people should show compassion and empathy. These people are suffering the worst judgement already for a society that doesnā€™t seem to care and sees them as problem rather than help them back on to the right path. The hotel is however in a good location in regard to attractions and transport, union square is only a few blocks east and getting around was a breeze. Plenty of near by shops, bars and restaurants. Overall my stay was pleasant, and the hotel served its purpose and is nowhere near as bad as some of these people make out. Thanks you. James (London UK)

This is a small hotel in the heart of san fco, always expect homeless whereever you go there but that is normal for San fco. The Hotel self if very secure, Main door is locked all the time and only gest has access to it. Front office staff were amazing to me and ,my friends, offering all the support and guidance to get affordable car park , extra pillows and towels when requested. Friendly making you feel like you are at home. Room was small but clean , newly painted , fridge , microwave, Fan, cabinets, Bathroom very big and comfortable. The area looks like any crowded city but closer to everything including the train terminal to move around without expending much money. For the price you paid the place is very good.

It ainā€™t heaven, itā€™s the Tenderloinā€¦ That being said The Bay Hotel is well kept compared to similar dorm style SRO hotels in the area and there is obviously a considerable amount of effort expended on keeping the place shipshape. AJ the front desk agent politely showed me the room before I booked in for the night and I found both the room and the two shared shower facilities on the floor to be completely above the board. Unfortunately I could hear the person in the room to my right snoring very loudly through the walls and the person(s?) to my left appreciating one anotherā€™s bodies vigorously. This is not really any fault of Bay Hotel and the complimentary Coffee and OJ was enough to cheer me after a rough nights sleep.

This front desk clerk is rude, borderline racist and insensitive to my situation; which is the site I booked the room days "the hotel MAY require a deposit " that tiny little detail is important because it says $250 deposit.. although I swear he keeps yelling $150. Anyway, I didn't have that in cash but attempted my debit card and it was declined. He would only refund what he just charged me and does not care and keeps yelling it's not his problem it's my problem and I never raised my voice. He smiled and was polite to other non black people that walked by me. I don't want to stay here but he isn't helping me get my money back so I can get a room elsewhere tonight. This is scary for a city dealing with homelessness. There was no need to get aggressive and tell me not having that money back now is not his problem. He won't attempt to contact the website or didn't want to give me the Manager's number and yelled again. I don't understand why he's so upset. I am the only one trying to solve the problem. The manager wasn't even sure how to help me. None of the customer service is polite. I am shaking to have to tell him to calm down. He's being more aggressive than he thinks I am supposed to be. I am sharing this because San Francisco seriously has a problem with homelessness but also racism and a lot of places don't feel welcoming.
