We loved our stay at Golden Gate Hotel! They have a cute cat, her name is Skittles and she came to greet us at the lobby when we arrived. The hotel has an European charming and offers complimentary breakfast with delicious croissants, the afternoon tea is also great! The location is perfect, we were a short walk from Union Square and China Town. We also took the cable car and it was a few steps from the hotel, very convenient! Thank you Felipe, Luce and Sebastian for the great hospitality during our stay in San Francisco.

Our family stayed here for two nights. We enjoyed the stay and all the people work there, The manager, Matthew and a few people I can't remember their names, but I always remember how wonderful they are! We enjoyed afternoon tea and cookies. We loved morning coffee and breakfast. Each of the employees works in the Hotel was so friendly and made us feel like home! We will stay there again next time we visit San Francisco!

Great friendly family run bed and breakfast well worth the journey just to meet the "boss" pip the cat, if you are very privileged he might even visit your room, great breakfast of coffee, muffins, croissants included, tea and biscuits are also served in the parlour every afternoon. Nothing is too much trouble, nice personal touch, so much better than a big chain hotel. It is situated in a nice part of the City with a cable car stop at the end of the block. Union Square is a 5 minute walk away, but it is uphill on the way back. When we stopped everyone we spoke to were returning customers, these people were from all ovrr the world

Beautiful European Boutique Hotel! I love this Hotel! The place is so beautiful and lovely decorated. Halem the manager is super kind and friendly. My room was super cozy and lovingly decorated; very clean, and comfortable bed. I felt like I traveled in time to a golden era. I would go back anytime to this wonderful hotel.

Best hotel ever. Great staff, nice rooms. I liked the tea time - nice to get in touch with the other guests. I hope the hotel will not change after it is now managed by new owners and after the former retiered inc. the cat.

If you love cats, pick room 107. Skittle greeted us and took us to our room. She ended up sleeping with us and spent rest of the morning till we checked out. Building is a traditional San Francisco Victorian style. If you would like to experience the old architecture and boutique hotel services, this is your place. Other guests seemed to be pretty quiet and respectful when we stayed. So we enjoyed our stay.

I would've given this hotel a 0 rating, if it wasn't for the young receptionist who helped me with info about getting around SF on public transport. She was professional and helpful. The person who served breakfast was also very polite and professional. (A 5 rating to those two staff members.) But beware of misleading hotel policies. I parked my car in the garage across the road and the hotel receptionist validated my parking. The hotel still charged me the full amount for parking. What is the point of validating parking if you can pay the garage directly yourself? They don't tell you the full truth, so as a guest you're left thinking that validating parking means parking is free or discounted. Be sure to ask the details beforehand. Is the hotel getting a referral fee if you park in the garage? If so, it may be cheaper for you to pay the garage directly. The bathroom was shared. I'd paid more for a room with private bathroom if I knew, but I arrived late and had already paid for reservation. A couple on a lower floor stayed on the balcony talking and smoking weed past midnight. The room didn't have AC and I had to leave the window open. The horrible smell of weed permeated my room while I was trying to sleep. This is not the fault of the hotel management. All I am saying is this is the kind of an experience you have expect if you decide to stay there. REPLY TO THE OWNER: No, that information was not transparent at all. If I had known and agreed to it, I would not have posted this review here!

Amazing staff! My girlfriend got food poisoning and they did everything in their power to accommodate and make her as comfortable as possible! We will never forget their kindness and will be back! Pip the Cat was hilarious and will say "hello" every time you enter the lobby. Ask where his treats are and he will love you. This hotel is very clean, comfortable and nostalgic! I simply cannot say enough good things about this hotel and the people who work there!

Stayed here one night, it is a nice place. Cat is very cute and always follows you to your room. Staff is really friendly and helpful. We requested a late check out and it was without problem. Place is old but that is what I like, old photos on walls telling some history. Cozy breakfast. The only thing was that it is kind of loud outside as it is downtown so, constantly cars, and ambulance, people, police but then it stops at night.

Loaded with charm from the front door to the lobby, to the antique elevator with hand painted walls going up the floors. Beautiful new vintage carpeting. Rooms are spotless. Some rooms have private bathrooms. Sit down continental breakfast served in the parlor. Close walking distance to Union Square and more. Beautiful boutique hotel!!

Great place, super friendly staff, including Pip, the cat. Despite having a shared bathroom, staff make sure it is clean at all times. Bedroom is small but this is San Francisco, you kinda have to expect that unless you are willing to pay a lot. Location wise this hotel is great - close to restaurants, Chinatown, public transportation... Even coming from the airport to the hotel was a breeze. Super nice place.

Best value in the city! Great location. Lovely hosts in an historic hotel. Rooms were quaint and cozy. Great night's sleep. Small but adequate bathrooms. We loved afternoon tea and breakfast...such a nice touch! Recommend top floor if you're a light sleeper since the floors creak a little with age.

We stayed the night while passing through San Francisco and loved the charm, the friendly service and the old antique elevator. Super friendly staff secured our bags in a back room when we arrived 4 hours prior to check in so we didn't need to lug it around the city lol. The bedding was FANTASTIC! Really pleasant stay and would come here again in a heartbeat!

Had a great stay here! The rooms were very cute and extremely clean. The staff was amazing! Shout-out to Samira for some amazing breakfast service and croissants. It should be noted that this hotel does not have Air conditioning. So if this bothers you, this might not be the best place for you. Opening the windows worked well for me.

Super cozy & charming hotel—we really enjoyed our experience. While we were there, we got to play with Skittles, the cat, who kept us entertained while we were away from our own cats. Breakfast was great too! We missed the croissants since we went down late, but caught a delicious blueberry muffin & tea. Everyone was kind & overall it was a great time.

Absolutely lovely staff. Hotel itself is cool. Only thing is the shared bathroom does not have a wash basin in it. So you potentially have people who have just wiped their bottoms running around the hotel touching things. Surely a health code violation or something?!

I LOVED Skittle the hotel cat! She stayed with me for a night in room 304. She also went to other guests on the 1st and 2nd floor. The receptionist let me know that Skittle walks around and picks up different people to stay with for the night. She jumped on my bed, walked on my pillow and on me. In the morning she stuck her head under my hand trying to wake me up. She purred softly when I petted her. I would go back and stay at this hotel just for the cat😂😻 About the hotel itself, I liked its 1913 style very much. It has a cosy atmosphere throughout. Elegant and slow pace, as if I were going back in time. There was classical and folk music at the background in the dining room, a great place to start the day with a coffee in the morning, and a great retreat place for a tea/coffee/home made cookie in the afternoon. The water in the shower was quite weak, so washing long hair would be challenging. Otherwise all is good!

My brother and I had a lovely 3 night stay at the Golden Gate Hotel in a double twin room with a shared bath in the hallway. Both the room and the bathroom were small but I expected as much for San Francisco. We had no problem with having to share a bathroom; I’m not even sure there was other guests on our floor for the first two days at least, as I never heard anyone else those two days. Being an old building, the floors are creaky and the walls are thin. We could hear some street noise from outside, so being earplugs or a white noise machine if you’re a light sleeper. The breakfast was simple but delightful and included tea, juice, coffee, croissants and jam. We walked around or used public transportation to get around with the nearest BART stop about 10 min away. This was a great value stay and I would return again if I visited San Francisco.

Feeling the need to write a review since i read quite everything in the others ones. I stayed one week in here (room 301, private bathroom) and it went quite great. It is indeed an old hotel - as the building is from 1913 - but everything in it is clean and well kept. Now keep it minds it's not one of those hotel with modern facilities which all looks the same. This one as its own atmosphere, which i actually liked. It is conveniently located near a cable car and not very far from Powell station if you arrive with a Bart train from the airport. Also, sf have a great transportation system (i advice buying a several days tickets and using the app Citymapper - that's a great combo. Helped me to visit everything easily). Service is also great. Everyone working there were helpful and nice. Special thanks to the lady who spoke to us on french and to the one who check me out. Some people complained about the noise. It didn't disturbed me. It's a city so expect some noise but nothing that terrible. I sure slept all my night perfectly and the 301 is street facing. What else to say... Be sure to check if your room have a private bathroom otherwise it will be shared with others. I did checked by phoning and had a clear answer. Breakfast ! It's made of coffee, tea, croissant and muffin. Quite tasty. Please note the lobby is quite small so be sure to be early if you expect to leave early to explore the city. At last, a special word about Skittles, the cat. I'm going to miss being greeted by Skittles for sure. She (or he?) Is an awesome addition to the team (and contrary to one of the previous comment i saw, let me tell that there is no odor in the hotel at all).

Update: 1hr after the review went live they refunded the room, wish it would have been proactive but we certainly appreciate the eventual resolution. We loved the hotel during our first stay and we went about 9 months ago and brought our cat because they are cat friendly. Well when we showed up to our reservation today we found out they updated the policy to no longer allow cats but we were not notified. We even put in the reservation notes that we were bringing our cat and they still didn’t notify us. They would not refund so now we are inconvenienced and out of money without being told about the updated policy regarding cats.

Wonderful place to stay! The hotel is so cute especially during the holidays and the cat was even cuter 😊 enjoyed the complimentary cookies and tea and the staff was great (arrived early and the room was ready so we got an early check in thank you!!) I’ve only been here for a few hours lol but was too excited about it and had to give it a good review before I forgot. Recommend 10/10 would stay again!

Delightful, friendly and beautiful hotel. Travel disruptions meant we had to stay three nights in San Francisco unexpectedly right before Christmas. We couldn’t have ended up at a nicer place! Lovely staff, spacious room, comfortable bed, and a truly welcoming feeling. Great location to explore San Francisco from. Highly recommended!

Amazing Hotel, gorgeous and clean and smells great. Historical vibes, narrow windy staircase and super cute rooms. I’d just mention there’s a shared shower/toilet on the second floor in case it’s not obvious from booking, so if it doesn’t mention your own shower or toilet in the booking page just know it’s shared!

After a 3 week sojourn around Northern California my girlfriend and I are headed back to the Golden Gate Matt, John, Lucy, and Sebastian are all so kind and hospitable, polite, and helpful. My girlfriend really misses the flaky, buttery, delicious croissants, orange marmalade, and jam at breakfast in their warm and cozy breakfast room. Aside from the great location there is another huge plus to this hotel. It is in a very safe and clean part of the city. That is a big benefit for travelers and those visiting from outside San Francisco.

This is a classic old hotel. If you want the latest modcons forget it. The walls are thin, the stair case narrow and the lift was out so not at all accessable. My room had it's own shower but some don't. Think of those rooms like a hostel. There is a shared toilet. Remember you get what you pay for as long as you keep that in mind this place is fine.

Absolutely loved the hotel! The staff were so friendly, and so accommodating of all our requests! Definitely loved staying in a piece of history! The only con was that the breakfast was very limited, we just had croissants and bread, with drinks. And also the elevator isn’t working because it needed to be repaired, a bummer but not super inconvenient. We were looking forward to riding the old elevator! Overall, a lovely stay. Hospitality, was top notch!

Really enjoyed staying here. Room and common areas were exceptionally clean. Cable car stop at end of block. 7 blocks from BART subway (Powell). Continental breakfast was quite good. Great restaurants within 2 blocks. Room was well appointed. TV is small, but we never turned it on. Has USB charging power strip. Fun antique elevator. Security is good...must have key to get into hotel and a separate key for room. Would definitely stay there again. Owners (since 1984) were very accommodating and friendly.
