An
hotel
that
I
remember
from
my
Singapore
trips
back
in
the
1980's.
Now,
in
dire
need
of
renovation.
One
only
has
to
look
up
at
the
York
hotel
from
its
outside
swimming
pool
to
see
the
state
of
the
paintwork
of
the
main
building.
The
staff
do
their
best
and
are
attentive
and
friendly.
The
White
Rose
Cafe
restaurant
serves
authentic
Asian
cuisine,
but
during
our
week
at
the
hotel
hardly
any
guests
were
having
dinner
there.
We
ate
at
the
White
Rose
one
evening
and
were
the
only
guests
dining
(we
could
have
a
long
chat
with
the
restaurant
staff).
It
has
very
little
ambiance
apart
from
the
view
of
the
chef
preparing
your
meal.
The
barren
tables
really
could
use
a
tablecloth
to
brighten
them
up.
Unfortunately,
the
major
problem
for
us
were
the
other
guests.
The
hotel
seems
to
be
mainly
frequented
by
tour
groups
from
mainland
China.
We
had
one
of
the
cabanas
adjacent
to
the
pool
and
were
disturbed
very
early
in
the
mornings
by
families
with
screeching
children
in
the
pool.
It
was
also
quite
disgusting
to
swim
next
to
people
clearing
their
throat
and
spitting
into
the
water.
Breakfast
with
these
tour
groups
meant
a
fight
to
grab
the
remains
of
the
food
available.
Often
we
came
to
breakfast
to
find
no
fruit,
yoghurts,
butter,
hardly
any
bread
and
very
little
left
of
the
hot
western
breakfast
(bacon/hash
browns).
We
asked
the
staff
to
refill,
but
either
nothing
came
or
it
disappeared
again
in
a
flash.
The
staff
could
not
replenish
it
fast
enough.
Other
points
that
I
must
make
is
the
truly
absurd
cost
of
the
laundry.
We
paid
SGD
255
(EUR
175!!)
for
the
standard/economy
laundry
service
of
28
items
(7
items
per
person,
with
many
t-shirts,
socks
and
underwear
included).
Nowhere
have
I
ever
paid
so
much.
It
would
have
been
almost
cheaper
to
have
thrown
the
clothes
away
and
re-purchase
everything!
And,
if
you're
bringing
AC
adaptors
with
you,
the
rooms
do
not
have
the
standard
UK-type
Singapore
plugs.
The
fittings
are
plug
type
M
(3
round
pins
with
very
small
plugs).
A
maintenance
man
had
to
come
to
our
room
and
lay
an
extension
block
with
cables
along
the
floor
in
order
that
we
could
charge
phones
and
use
other
appliances
using
the
standard
Singapore
adaptors
that
we
had
brought
with
us.
The
hotel's
close
proximity
to
Scotts
and
Orchard
Road
(a
5-minute
walk
to
Far
East
Plaza
out
the
back
of
the
hotel)
is
its
major
selling
point.
Currently,
the
York
Hotel
is
extremely
overpriced
with
poor
value
for
money.
Due
to
the
ill-mannered
tour
groups
who
seem
to
spend
all
day
standing
in
the
hotel
pool
and
hogging
the
buffet
breakfast,
I
really
cannot
recommend
it
for
a
pleasant
stay.
So,
sadly,
an
older
hotel
that
has
really
seen
its
day.
