正式名称は飛驒一宮水無神社(ひだいちのみや
みなしじんじゃ)
主祭神は御歳大神(御年大神、みとしのおおかみ)。十四柱の相殿神を中心に飛騨一円の神々を奉祀。
水無神(みなしのかみ)の名は平安時代中期に編纂された格式「延喜式(えんぎしき)」に記載され、飛騨国の一宮と称されて飛騨国中の宗祀として現在に至るまで篤い信仰を受けています。社名の水無は諸説あり「水主(川の水源をつかさどる神)」の意味であり、「みなし」(水成)または「みずなし」とも読み、俗に「すいむ」と音読することもあるようだ。
まず目に付くのは正面の鳥居横に立つ大杉。樹高45㍍、枝張り幅20㍍、目通り6.45㍍。樹齢およそ800年。昭和38年9月に県の天然記念物に指定。間近でみると巨大さがすぐわかる。
次に目に付くのは進むと右側の神馬舎にある木造の2頭の神馬「「稲喰神馬」(黒駒)と「祈晴の神馬」(白駒)
「稲喰神馬」作者は不詳、古来より名匠「左甚五郎」の作と言い伝えられています。昔々に毎夜厩舎を出て農作物を荒らし、収穫の頃の稲穂を食ったとして村民が黒駒の両目を抜き取ったところ、以来耕作地を荒らすことが止んだと伝えらているそうだ。
「祈晴の神馬」は元は黒駒で作者は飛騨の工匠の武田万匠とされている。明治15年に大池宮司により体は白く尾と髪が黒い川原毛と呼ぶ彩色に塗り換えられ、その時に腹に武田の銘が入っていたと云われている。古来祈晴れの神馬として連日の降雨、毎年例祭前の祈晴祭には神前に黒駒と共に引き揃えて祈晴祭を執行する古例があったそうだ。
明治36年に行われた大祭では、飛騨一円の博労衆が醵金(きょきん)して、再び黒馬に塗りかえ、その後に大正天皇の御大典の記念として現在の白月毛に化粧され、台輪も金具付きの立派なものになったと云われているとのこと。
この2頭の神馬は一宮の神馬として牛馬安全の信仰が極めて篤く、神札絵馬等にして授与されているとのこと。
他に目に付くのは一夜にしてねじ曲がったとされる巨大なねじの木。むかし境内大鳥居の横に目通り径1.5㍍、高さ数十㍍もある桧の大樹がありました。しかし社家や民家が大樹により日蔭になるので里人たちが伐って普請に使おうとしたところ、一夜の中に幹はもとより梢に至るまでねじ曲がってしまった謂れがあるとのこと。
神門の中にある御神木の大イチョウ(子授け公孫樹)は例年11月上旬~中旬頃が紅葉の見頃。樹齢およそ800年。かつて落雷によって上部が欠損したが、折れたところから若枝が繁茂して、イチイ・ナラ・ケヤキ・クルミなどの宿木を抱いて、見事な枝振りとなっている。
枝の下から乳房状の下垂根が垂れており、古くよりこの樹に信仰すれば、子の無い者は子が授かり、乳の出ない母は乳が授かると言われ、遠近の婦女子より子授け、安産、縁結びの御神樹として信仰されているとのこと。
神門の中の大銀杏は神門が開く祭典日(毎年10月1日、15日、11月1日、15日、23日の6時〜16時にしか間近で観ることができないので注意が必要だ。
