Iraj
Castle
is
one
of
the
rarest
clay
fortresses
in
the
world,
and
it
is
50
feet
high
and
200
hectares
wide.
It
was
built
in
the
Sassanid
era,
but
due
to
non-maintenance
and
destruction
by
profiteers
(digging
with
loaders
under
the
pretext
of
widening
the
roads
around
the
castle
or
digging
a
pool),
it
was
severely
damaged.

European
archaeologists
Jean
Deulafova
and
Clais
have
researched
this,
and
Clais
said
about
Iraj
Castle
that
the
north-south
length
of
Iraj
Castle
is
1,214
meters
and
its
east-west
width
is
1,150
meters,
which
cannot
be
compared
with
any
of
the
historic
adobe
castles
in
the
world.
Some
believe
that
Iraj
Castle
is
the
same
as
Varna
Castle,
whose
name
is
mentioned
in
Vendidad.
Etemad
al-Sultaneh
in
his
book
Marat
al-Baldan
and
George
Curzon
in
his
travelogue
equated
the
square
fortress
of
Iraj
with
the
fortress
of
Varna
in
Avesta.
The
14th
country
I

ease
is
Varnai
Quadrangle,
the
birthplace
of
Fereydon,
the
slayer
of
the
Dragon
Hawk.
—
Vendidad,
Avesta
Also,
because
Iraj
was
the
name
of
Feridun's
son,
there
is
a
high
possibility
that
Iraj
castle
is
the
same
as
Varna.
Architectural
features:
The
dimensions
of
this
big
brick
castle
are
about
1440
x
1280
meters.
On
the
four
sides
of
this
fort,
gates
have
been
built
to
allow
entry
and
exit.
Today,
of
its
four
gates,
only
the
main
gate
remains.
The
only
wall
has
a
width
of
about
17
to
22
meters
and
its
highest
height
is
16
meters.
The
exterior
of
the
wall
has
146
semi-circular
towers
on
four
sides,
which
are
decorated
with
four
arches
between
the
spans
of
both
towers,
which
are
two-leveled
in
some
parts.
The
materials
used
in
it
are
clay
and
mud
and
it
is
known
as
the
biggest
defensive
mud
and
clay
fort
in
Iran.
Inside
the
thick
walls
of
Iraj
fortress,
there
are
corridors
that
connect
the
observation
towers.
The
mortar
of
the
walls
is
made
of
clay
and
brick.
There
are
also
trenches
in
the
outer
area
of
the
fort.
