Unfortunately the previous reviews about failure to comply with good hygiene were correct. The sheets had a stain of dried blood at the edge of the bed and the housekeeper kindly told me about the several large black streaks on the pillow cases that were conveniently hidden to face the headboard. Hygiene is the most important when staying at a hotel because it sets the image and precedent of what is to come. Checked out early as I refuse to stay at a place that does not check before allowing a guest to enter the room. I paid for the deluxe legacy king bedroom facing the pool. Better pay cash if you want to make sure you get your money back “guaranteed”. Beware for those using credit card as they do not guarantee return of your money before leaving and explained verbatim “they have to contact their supervisor as they have a long-complicated process via emails”.

"Staying at this hotel was an enchanting experience, thanks to its stunning architecture and attention to detail. The swimming pool, patios, reception, and hall areas were particularly impressive and transported you to another era. However, I couldn't help but notice that the rooms could use some renovation soon. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would recommend this hotel for its unique charm and ambiance."

I recently stayed at Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta and had a mixed experience. Unfortunately, upon arrival, our room was not ready, and the staff's dismissive and rude attitude was disappointing. Despite requesting a room with a king bed, we were given one with two single beds instead. However, the situation improved when the manager intervened. He was genuinely nice and apologetic, and our room was eventually sorted out. Once settled, I found the facilities and room to be quite impressive. The hotel itself had a pleasant ambiance, and I would recommend prospective guests to personally check the rooms before making a booking. Despite the initial setbacks, the manager's intervention and the overall quality of the facilities redeemed the experience to some extent.

+ Great service by friendly staff Fast in-room internet Good water pressure in shower & fast heating hot water Pretty setting restaurant at the courtyard - Overall room needs renovation. Pretty dated. In room dining food outcome. Paid 60k for nasi gudeg, came with 2 dice-sized tofu, tempe, krecek. I set my expectation low for hotels food so that wasn't surprising much but laughable.

I have been here the last time on a short trip on december 2021, for one night. It has always been my favourite hotel to go when in Yogya and i have been there few times before. The building is historical and charming, the staff professional and friendly, fast check in and good breakfast as usual. I give 4 stars only because compared to the last times i have been here, maybe the last time before that it was 3 years ago, some parts of the hotel looked a bit run down, like they have been holding mainteinance work and cut budget for renovation and refurbishing. I guess that the covid crisis hit a bit hard on the budgets and things have been rough. It shows it on the building and on the overall status of the rooms and public areas. I hope that they will address these things because it’s a beautiful hotel, with a great service and history. I will be back anyway next time and i wish to see it more shiny as it used to be.

Built around a renovated Art Nouveau building from 1918 in a similar style. The design is of course a matter of taste - to me, the choice of the decoration is a bit questionable. My room is on the small side and a bit cramped, not worth five stars. The hotel has a nice atmosphere, but there is a lack of attention to details. The pool, the sauna and the gym are nice, but why are the towels so tiny? I cannot comment on the food, as I decline eating at the restaurant because of the musical entertainment: having to listen to 'Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer' and 'Jinglebells' is not my idea of dinner in Yogykarta. By the way: maybe part of the clientele thinks it's a cute idea, but to my European taste the Santa hats the staff are wearing are just silly. What I expect in a 'heritage' hotel are batik costumes.

Decent hotel, okay service, very reasonably priced. Amenities are reasonable, rooms are kinda old but clean. Didn't order breakfast, since we went to Jogja to enjoy the restaurants over there. Parking is okay, but the amount of parking space is very limited. Front office people are fast and friendly. The bed is a bit soft to my liking, but that might be just the room I stayed in.

It has good location. Room and Bathroom were clean and well-maintained but We had some issues with the lift, it was not functioning properly. The Breakfast was marvelous with good array of traditional food and had the homemade vibe. The staff have been really helpful.

This place is awesome. The beautiful structure is decorated throughout and although the place feels a little aged and due an update it is still classic and luxurious. Great staff -super friendly and helpful. Close to malioboro and easy to get to other places around Jogja.

This historic property is in need of some TLC. Hopefully owners will invest some money to renovate hotel and bring it back to former glory. The rooms are outdated with no plug outlets near bed unless you unplug appliances. Room was in need of some deep cleaning especially in bathroom where floor appeared to have built in dust / grime. Service was inconsistent in restaurant with hardly any staff visible except for one breakfast during our five night stay when we received good service from one waiter unfortunately didn’t catch his name. Staff that were present tried as best they could and tried to be helpful. Assume it’s a post covid staffing issue. Bartenders inexperienced but they tried very hard to please. Asked if the drinks they were making were “good.” Location of hotel great. Walking distance to Marilboro street. Room amenities - slippers worn and safe in odd location. No real dresser space but old credenza closet. Terrace overlooking pool nice little escape. Water provided in room but not plentiful.

Another great hotel to stay overnight or couples in Jogjakarta. Located near Tugu area, providing lots of option for culinary and food. Aesthetic place, quiet place for staycation even though it is located on the main road. The room is cozy. Great atmosphere around the place. Vintage feel like for the furniture and decoration. Kind staff that warms us with great hospitality.

A very comfortable and grand hotel located in a great location in Yogyakarta which is near the Malioboro, heart of the city. Though we can feel that some of the facilities are aged, the room is clean and tidy. The staff always wear smiles and are friendly. The dining area is great, and the breakfast with diversified choice of food is credit-added. Recommended!

This is a lovely hotel and very tastefully decorated. I was impressed by how clean the whole place was. it was really nice to have new sheets every day without having to ask. Staff was and service was wonderful; couldn't ask for better.

TL;DR version: noisy, dirty, average service, felt like a 2-3 star motel. Breakfast was good. Don’t use them to book transfers/drivers (scam). Overall, not worthwhile, stay elsewhere. I stayed in: “Phoenix Executive, King Size Bed” General hotel: quite a beautiful hotel; the building has a lot of history, and interesting character. The fitness room, sauna, and pool area are well equipped and clean too. Location is not far from Malioboro. The room: looks like it hasn’t been renovated since the 1980s. The living space: dark and poorly lit, it contains a couch in the room with visible stains, and covered in hair from previous guests. Tiny suitcase holder, cupboard doors that don’t open properly. The bedroom: bed is quite comfortable, room overlooks the pool from the balcony. Curtains don’t close very well, they have burn marks and Velcro holding them together. The TV is small and has the inputs disabled so you can’t plug in your own device. The bar fridge was so buzzing so loudly I had to unplug it. Noise: minimal soundproofing; night 1 constant scraping of furniture across the floor from next door. Night 2, loud music via balcony (like a mix tape from a 90’s birthday party) being played from somewhere the reception said was ‘the cafe’, and also guests calling to each other across the balconies. The corridors to the rooms echo like you wouldn’t believe, and so the sound carries through to the room. The bathroom: old, dirty. The cornices are dirty and cracked; floor tiles have cracks in them. Bidet sprayer looks rusty, and something that looks like a blood stain on the vanity mirror. Poor lighting like the living space. The toilet blocked on my second night (nothing I did!); so maintenance had to come fix that… leaving the puddle of toilet water behind. It soon blocked again, so must be general plumbing issues. Dining: I ate at Paprika the first night, the food was quite decent, and reasonably priced. The signature ‘gin sling’ was delicious. The service was not great; when I was eating my entree a wait staff member started hovering near the table waiting. As soon as I had the last bite, they were there immediately to take my plate and ask if I want the main. The same thing happened with the main, except this time I was only half way through the meal before they tried to take my plate, and then just stood around waiting afterwards. It made it feel like I was being rushed, and it was very uncomfortable. Because of this I didn’t stay for dessert, but thought I’d try in-room dining instead. Per the hotel guide, “In Room Dining Menus are available in your room”… umm, no they aren’t. Someone brought up a menu though, and waited whilst I read it (again… no rush!!!). Breakfast: buffet style breakfast, with a very large selection of both Indonesian and International cuisine, also with a fresh egg bar (I.e. cook to order). They have an automated coffee machine, which made decent coffee. Breakfast was definitely the best thing about my stay. The service: a lot of the staff have a “I’m learning” badge on. That sums it up; inexperienced, inferior service, but at least they try. No senior staff member to support the “I’m learning” staff (must only learn through their mistakes). Check-in: slow, confused staff. I was doing an early sunrise tour the next day, and requested an early breakfast…filled out a form for this. Early breakfast: did not arrive, and no one downstairs before I had to leave. Receiving feedback: I told the reception desk that I didn’t receive the breakfast. The response they had was “oh, okay”. Maintenance: quick to send someone to fix the toilet issue; sending a cleaner afterwards would have been nice. Concierge: always unattended, so can’t comment. Booking airport transfers/tour drivers: DO NOT book through the hotel, they add a markup: 550k for golden bird airport transfer; I booked direct with golden bird for 237k. More than double for the same service! Same with day trip prices (ie Borobudur/Prambanan).

Everything we could have hoped for! We had a fantastic stay at the Hotel Phoenix! The old colonial-style palace is gorgeous, and the renovations and modernisation have been incorporated very well into the bones of the building. The rooms are comfortable and reasonably sized, including the bathrooms, and we weren't missing any of the amenities you would expect of a 5 star hotel. The food (both breakfast and dinner) is incredible - including the buffet offerings, which is a feat - so much so that we didn't feel like we were missing anything by staying in to eat mornings and evenings (and we're big foodies!). The spa and pool were also fantastic, and we very much enjoyed our massage treatments. But above all, the service was friendly, attentive and overall top-notch. Any request or question we had was met with a smile and prompt service. We especially want to thank Bayu for his help with our dinner service, and Jeje for taking us on the fee tour of the hotel's history and legacy - that tour being one of the highlights of our trip, and a fascinating insight into modern Indonesian history through the perspective of a modern-day landmark!

Hotel was very clean, very comfortable bed, very beautiful from outside. It is a bit outdated inside (showers could use an update). Staff was very kind and attending with great english speakers. Breakfast and restaurant could be better. Far too many options but not that many good ones.

A comfy hotel that's connected to the kelapa gading mall. The room was big enough and it had a sofa that was big enough for children to sleep on. Would have liked it better if the shower was a bit large but overall it was all good

Top quality hotel 🏨… would chose it again. We stayed 3 days. 2 points for improvement: to get coffee with milk at breakfast is a real challenge sometimes. Long queue. Second: on the last day we wanted to visit Borobudur, asked to check for reservations. Hotel assistance told us that this is not needed, we can buy tickets at the temple. But we didn’t get on it when we arrived, all was sold out.

I can't recommend the phoenix hotel enough for a business trip. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly attentive and helpful. The hotel had such a warm and welcoming ambiance that instantly put us at ease, don't forget about how convenient the location was. It was absolutely incredible 💯

Our most memorable stay of our whole vacation! We met Tina, the hotel manager, on the plane from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. We were getting along and talking and she mentioned she was manager of a hotel and could arrange some trips for us. Since we were going with the flow, she offered us a free taxi drive to her hotel and set us up with an amazing driver AND guide (fafa if I recall correctly). We had an amazing day, after which she was able to cancel our uncancelable hotel and offered us a beautiful room at a friend price. The staff was amazing, very friendly, helpful always with a smile. Quickly I became the famous Mr. Cedric in the hotel. We had a refreshing swim in the gorgeous pool, and stayed the day after with, again, an amazing driver and guide. The day was action-filled and we were invited in a personal dinner with Tania. It was amazing because she was able to note every real Indonesian dish so we had a good taste of what Yogyakarta has to offer. After that we were able to stay in our room until 2h at night so we could directly catch our train and have a refreshing shower. I would recommend this hotel to everyone, I think its the best location we ever stayed in! Thanks to Tania, Fafa and the amazing crew of Phoenix hotel!!!

Very Beautiful hotel. However, Housekeeping they need to pay extra attention in every single rooms. I was staying in 2 different rooms. level 2 & level 3. Both rooms bathroom, has very poor cleanliness. Look like they don't even brother to scrub and clean the bathroom.

A beautiful hotel, full of charm, a true heritage hotel. and a superb buffet breakfast was included in the room rate. My only complaints were that fruit juices on the otherwise impeccable breakfast buffet would be so much nicer if made from fresh fruit. I also found it unnecessary for staff to remove my swimming costume from where it was lying on my swimming towel outside my room with no indication to me as to where it had been taken. Little details that spoiled an otherwise perfect stay!

We stay at this hotel from 4/11-7/11/23. The hotel room was very comfortable, clean and convenient located.the service at the hotel was excellent, especially the two staffs members at the front desk Rama and Nabila . They will very friendly and accommodating. The only downside was that the breakfast food was too cold and hope the hotel can improve in that aspect.

Excellent hotel. Very pleasant and friendly staff. Rooms of a good size and bathroom well equipped with accessories. Breakfast lunch and dinner all varied in cuisine, well cooked and presented. A very good hotel makes you feel welcome from the moment you check in to the moment you check out.

This hotel is so beautiful, it's probably one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed at. It truly has everything you could need, plus the best breakfast spread. The hotel staff are incredibly nice and so accomodating. They helped me with everything from arranging transportation from the train station to the hotel, helping me book tickets to see the Borobudur and Prambanan Temples, and calling for taxis when I wanted to sightsee or had to leave for the airport. I absolutely loved staying here and I hope I can return again soon.

The staff was very friendly. The building with his colonial style was kept in its original state, which is quite unique. There are some improvements; the beds were dirty and there were ants over the whole place. It was not clean which I would expect for an M-Gallery although we got a new room after the complaint.

Beautiful place However, the long chairs at the swimming pool don't have mattress. It is so tough that it is difficult to stay more than 30 min. The staff couldn't help, was last, we had to go to the Spa to find mattress, then elsewhere, no one could help. Or were just afraid to say 'no'. We arrived at 1pm, impossible to do the check in before 2pm while most of rooms are empty. Beautiful but those things are disappointing for the price

I stayed here 2 nights together with my fiance. Cannot complain about anything. Rooms are nice and clean. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Props to Feggie for helping us so much 🙏. Interior equipment in colonial style. Like a flasback in the past. If i have to criticise something it's the not very special choice of things at the breakfast. Anyway food is very good and restaurant is comfy. Will come here again on my next trip to Yogjakarta!!!

I stayed here for 3 days meeting. The room is spacious and clean. The service is great and staff were very helpful. One thing I complained is food variation and taste is quite bland with almost same menu daily, they even served nasi goreng for dinner.... Perhaps this was because we have packed meal, room and meeting hall so the meal is plain. Hopefully they will improve the meals.

3 stars for a 3 star hotel. The staff were very friendly and accommodating but way below expectations of an international branded boutique hotel. Room was not ready at check in, the air conditioning leaked overnight to create a giant puddle of water on the floor and when we were moved to a new room, the shower didn't work. Breakfast was fine but the limited menu served at the restaurant and room service was overpriced for the quality. As mentioned the staff were super friendly and helpful which made the stay ok.

An aestetic hotel with friendly staff. The building is old but well maintained and cleaned properly 👍 the food were all delicious too. The room is a bit small and needs more lamps to make it brighter, but overall its clean and comfortable. If its possible when you stay here, order the room that have even number, the view of the balcony will be the swimming pool

I think it's my 4th stay in this beautiful old hotel and this time they upgraded me to bigger room. The services from start to finish were excellent. Thank you for birthday cake for my mom. Breakfast is decent. Only one minor problem from the leaking AC in room 245.

It’s beyond my expectations!! The room is clean and spacious, the staffs are very friendly and helpful, the drinks are quite tasty. Their building is veeeery fun to explore!! The location is also in the city centre. Would be better if they have lamp in the terrace.

Great hotel with an epic breakfast and a lovely swimming pool. The distances can be quite far from hotel room to breakfast as there are few staircases. The walls are quite thin but the location is great too.

  • 2/5 Xavier J. 1 year ago on Google
Disappointing hotel despite the grand exterior. We booked a suite and got given a corner location with a balcony facing a wall! Room was OK, breakfast is fine with ample choice (European, American, local food). Evening restaurant though is a disaster: dishes brought so slowly some people were finished while others were still waiting, three menus with different dishes but only one is valid. Spa is disappointing for Indonesia: poor products, rushed service. There is no business centre: printing has to be done at reception and scanning documents is a battle... And finally for 3 days in the restaurant, the same track of a Gamelan album was playing in a loop despite asking to change. Turned us completely mad.

  • 2/5 Jordan K. 1 year ago on Google
The property is okay. Stayed there for a weekend just before a business meeting on a Monday. Pros: Location is good, you can be on Jl Malioboro in a couple of minutes. It is handy to universities and government offices. Spa is good. Check in was quick. The coffee shop next door does excellent smoothie bowls and flat whites. Hotel organised a great driver to take us to Borobudur. Cons: the bathroom was gross - hair in the shower plug, ants, a showerhead that shot in all directions. It was also very noisy. Avoid rooms on the first floor by the restaurant - you'll get woken up by trolleys moving luggage and catering equipment. We were also not asked if we wanted smoking or non-smoking. The room given had a smell of smoke. The restaurant was average. Food was underwhelming and cold. Beer was warm, and they were out of Bintang. There was a big wedding on when I was there, meaning the pool area was closed off for a private function, so no swimming. This hotel is fine, but the owners need to spruce it up a bit.

Very comfortable, historic hotel. Staff were great, very helpful and attentive, and remembered small details about our orders even though we only stayed a few days. The room was spacious and clean, and the balcony a lovely place to sit. A little noise from the corridors as you would expect, otherwise very quiet. Staff in the Vino Bar were particularly attentive in our trip. Probably one of the best equipped gyms I’ve seen in a hotel in a very long time. Will definitely return if in the area again.

Old colonial charm. Buildings and rooms still maintain the architecture of past. That being said, it's hard to retrofit modern facilities, so minor things like plumbing may not be as great. But staff are friendly, warm and helpful. Location is conveniently located near the tugu and many warungs, and walking distance of Malioboro. Worth staying at if you like old world 🌎 charm
