The place is as bad as it gets. The beer is fine but the rest? A mess. Would never recommend it. I ordered a steak medium rare....i had to butcher it myself thats how raw it was. But nevermind the salad dressing was so sour it killed all the bacteria.

Cash only... Really cool bar with some meal options. There is a cat waiter/host who is apparently quite famous both locally and internationally (the film "Another Forever" 2016 had some portions filmed in the bar, including the cat!). The human hostess and host are also quite nice and friendly. Tue food is good with a limited, albeit adequately diverse, menu. I had the ossenwurst (Dutch Sausage) sandwich which was pretty interesting. The onion soup and apple pie are also nice. Lots of cool beers to go with everything too. Definitely worth a check-in for a relaxing lunch in a relaxing atmosphere.

CASH ONLY!! Tried this out as close to hotel. Amazing atmosphere. Not much English spoken here but they understand English and menus in English too. Decent selection, not too much. Reasonable priced. I paid €35 with tip for 2 drinks: beer and glass wine plus pepper steak. Came with generous salad and large fries. Tasty. Prompt service. Good for people watching. Love the friendly cat. Do give it a try.

Food excellent. Beer excellent. Service was excellent until I was not allowed to pay with an English credit card. Hence only 3 stars. Not a cheap place to eat either.

It have started wrong from the very beginning - it took them more than 15 minutes to bring our order ( a bottle of beer and coffee), but it went even worse after we asked for a bill - after about 10 minutes of waiting I’ve approached the bar inside and asked to pay my bill. It turned out they accept only cash payments and I haven’t had any. I politely mentioned to the lady at the bar I’d expect them to let me know about cash -only payments before we put our order, as I now have to borrow the money from my friend in order to pay. The lady started to shout I should go away now and she doesn’t need my money. When I brought the borrowed cash and insisted to pay, she took my money while keeping being very rude… Thats clearly my worst experience dining in Amsterdam - which is generally a very welcoming city with a great culture On top of the fact other customers sitting in the place were overwhelmed by this lady’s behavior, this lady clearly unaware of possible implications for such customer treatment. Just pass on this place, there are plenty of other restaurants around with great service where you wont feel humiliated

Best meal I had in my 9-day trip to Holland and Belgium. Also the only place where they wouldn't accept my foreign credit card. Food was delicious and portions very generous. Don't expect a top-notch service, when I needed a refill I had to go inside and the woman was having dinner. My table neighbour (I could tell she was a customer of many years) told me the place used to be a meeting place for journalists a few years ago, before they moved to another area. She also told me the woman in charge is at least the third generation running the place. I'll certainly repeat in my next visit to Amsterdam.

Stopped by just for a quick bite to eat and a cuppa tea. You would easily miss this place as you walked by but I’m glad I came in. Very friendly service. Prices are ok but this is central Amsterdam (I’m used to London prices anyway) our sandwiches were yummy. Only giving 4 stars as I didn’t get to try anything that was a proper meal, like the steak they had on the menu. Would visit again. Very lovely place. They also have a cat!!

The waiters were absolutely lovely. I always visit when I want to study or work on projects and I’m always served fast en with smiles, especially by the manager mrs. Karnika. She makes me feel so at home whenever I’m there. 10/10 would recommend to either hang out or study here.

We went here because it was round the corner from where we were staying. It is a lovely, old "brown" bar owned by the same family since 1967. It lies on what used to be Amsterdam's Fleet Street and the journalists would eat and drink here. It wasn't busy and most of the customers were locals. We had good burgers and delicious Mimosas. The staff were wonderful. Would recommend highly. One caveat, it's cash only.

Nice Bistro/Café. From 10am to 5pm the kitchen is operational, and you can order from a variety of snacks and foods. Ambiente is old rustic and clean. Very charme. Prices are more than reasonable.

We loved the stake, it was super delicious. However the rest of the food was average. It's not possible to pay with card. Cash only.

Lovely traditional typical Dutch food restaurant. Great eggs Dutch style for lunch and tonight enjoyed baked calf liver with bacon unions and apple with some french fries… and a real Amsterdam staff .. this place is a joy for stomach and mind …

Great dinner, interesting stop with traditional decoration and friendly staff. Ate here with my parents and we enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, it was served quickly and the staff is really attentive to customers.

Old style dining and drinking in brown surroundings. This is a flashback to days gone by in this brown restaurant/café, where the bills is handwritten with a pen and payment is cash only.

Friendly and full of character. Admittedly I arrived before the evening rush, but the service was very quick and the food well cooked and plentiful. Great beer and coffee too. Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic restaurant- spent dinner there our first night in Amsterdam. Our host was fantastic, atmosphere was warm and friendly and the food, delicious. We went back the next night for dinner to experience it all again. Thank you Scheltema. Renee and Alan, Gold Coast, Australia

Bartender spoke down to us by instructing us to sit down. After waiting we finally ordered and he returned to the table throwing the coasters at the table and walked off. This was by far the worst service we have while visiting.

Nice staff, we asked for a coffee that wasn't normally on the menu, and the waitress made it anyhow. The service was good.

Had a good lunch. Prices are fair. I had to withdraw Euros as their card machine wasn't working, which would have been nice to know before ordering.

Steak was dry and not really fresh. Very Small proportions in drinking and eating. Fries were ok, ajoli was good

Very cosy, nice beers on draught. Friendly staff. Verybtraditional inside with lots of framed photos and literature if you cared to read (we didn't have time). They had a cat who was old so it was roaming about aimlessly but it added to the vibe of the place.

It is 2021, and they dont have a card reader. I had to go through the whole tikkie process with my private number to settle the payment because the scanner of my phone could not read the bar code provided. The woman behind the bar (i guess the owner) was salty and full of attitude and commented with her colleague in Dutch language on my phone with a rude manner. The male staff i guess the restaurant manager, on the other hand an interesting and interested person, made an effort to make us feel welcomed. There is a cat, probably to keep mice way. Despite its history and tradition the place looks a bit running down.

Me and my girl went to the Café Scheltema (we found through Google Maps). In fact, after we visited once we had to visit again because it was very tasty and enjoyable. The place is warm (literally), with wonderful service and a welcoming and excellent chef !!! Thanks.

👍👍 The perfect place to enjoy high-quality seafood at a reasonable price. Was surprised to see this large restaurant buzzing at 5pm (both inside and outside!) but after seeing the fresh fish on display and trying the sashimi which just melts in the mouth I understood why. The staff were also very well-...
