Beautiful decor and okay food. But that’s about it Was having a good night until one of their patrons started with racial slurs against me over a bar stool.I was accused that I think I’m better because I’m with white people”. Needless to say I raised this with the manager on duty at the bar area; he would not have it. I felt targeted and treated differently primarily because of the colour of my skin. When asked logically about their sudden change in decision - they could offer nothing. I will be following up on this…this is 2022 such should not happen in South Africa

Food is always amazing👌as well as the doorman, real gentlemen. I find the hostess needs to find more polite ways of speaking to customers, there's a level of arrogance which is distasteful. Our waitress was lovely but the runner staff visited a little too much, we were convinced the kitchen was short of crockery & cutlery. Lighting can be a challenge, definitely suggest more candles or lamps at the tables. Still a unique venue with mysterious allure.

Really good vibe! Opens at 6pm. Portions are quite small but the presentation of dishes are beautiful. If you'd like to eat until you're full you'd most likely need about 3 mains per person. (Approx. R100 - R150 per main) I'd recommend the grilled calamari, beef skewers and ostrich meat. Highly recommend - it has a different candle lit atmosphere.

Very beautiful restaurant with an Asian Fusion motive. The best starter is wagyu crockets and from the main fried polenta, tuna tacos are delicious. Malva cake is amazing! Great service and beautiful atmosphere

Cool place on Kloof. Nice food, small portions but that leads to the fact that you can enjoy more dishes. Only downfall: tables could only be reserved for one hour on a Tuesday due to high demand. We had to finish our food and drinks in a hurry.. not nice.

A really busy vibe and fantastic tapas. The decor is cool but watch out for the low hanging branches in the restaurant!! Service was attentive, and they have some fantastic wines. Definitely worth a visit but book in advance.

Beautifully designed space with a great vibe and the best music. All the food was delicious from appetizer to dessert and drinks alike. All dishes could also be conveniently shared with the rest of the table and everything was so artfully presented. Will definitely visit again and again!

This place is so beautiful. I’ll keep coming back. Would love to try their 3 course meal it looks divine. The staff here are very professional and I love how they explain your selection of wine to you. Makes the whole experience exceptional. I’ve had the chicken curry on 2 occasions here and it is so delicious. Great food, cocktails and amazing atmosphere.

The cocktails were good, espresso martini is exactly how I love to finish a dinner. Started with a Manhattan which was well made. The mezze plate was good although the hummus was heavy of citrus which is not to my taste but in no way was this a reflection of whether it was delicious or not. Tuna tostada (tacos) were excellent. Tenderstem broccoli came with a very nice and well spiced sauce.

Asoka is lit! In fact, it is so candlelit that an inexperienced observer may be tempted to call the fire department. I am secretly regretting 90% of my 5-star ratings for atmosphere because they should really be reserved for places like Asoka. Their VIBE (yes, in capitals) is splattered with sexy lines, moody lighting, and lively Acid Jazz all they way from the steps on Kloof Street to the back wall of the toilet. If you are booking a table for a romantic evening with your partner, Table 20 under the 180-year-old olive tree is the way to go. You'll sit close enough to each other to have a conversation when the joint gets busy, and if you are tall, you'll fit under the table. (If you are taller than 6ft, the ottomans by the fireplace are not for you.) As you would expect from the setting, the service is top notch. Hosts, waiters and runners, and even the smiling bouncer at the door, are all easy-going, friendly, and professional. (Thanks for the great service, Jo) When it comes to drinking and eating, the only thing in the bar more impressive than the actual shelves holding the bottles, are the cocktails. The tapas-style dishes coming from the kitchen were beautifully presented (I think). It was slightly too dark to see the colours and textures of the actual food, but it was clearly expertly plated. Overall, the food was good, but not mind-blowing. We shared seven different dishes, curious to see how Aisan Fusion is interpreted at Asoka. From a flavour perspective, it did not quite hit the mark, as you would hope considering the price point. Don't misunderstand me on this one... EVERY dish was packed with flavour, but almost overpoweringly towards a single note. The Duck Spring Rolls are deeply salty, for instance, and the accompanying reduction is not quite sweet enough to balance it out. Adding a unique complimentary contrast to each plate will go a long way to making the taste profiles pop (like shiso leaf with the ostrich). This is a longer than usual review, because Asoka is a place I instantly loved. I'll go back to soak up the atmosphere, and I will happily recommend it to anyone looking to spend their evening in style. If you are specifically visiting Cape Town for a culinary tour, I would lean towards Belly of the Beast and Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia for menu dégastation, and for tapas-style plates, Bistro Sixteen82 at Steenberg Wine Estate.

Myself and my girlfriend had an enjoyable time here. We arrived early when the venue was still fairly empty. Our waitress and her support staff were fantastic. We decided to do the dinner special of which it was felt that portion size was on the small side, although a good selection was available and it was all very tasty. Overall I would give the experience 3 stars, if based purely on the food and hospitality / service. However, the 1 star rating I have given here is due to zero covid 19 protocols in place. No hand sanitizer dispensers were in place at the entrance, on the tables or in the restrooms. Masks were not being properly worn by staff, nor were our temperatures taken upon entry or a tracing form required to be completed. Social distancing was not adhered to. As the restaurant filled, tables were being seated closely next to each other, well within 1.5m from each other.

Lovely atmosphere with the low lighting which makes for an incredible romantic feeling especially for date night. Drinks were delicious and the food was delightful! Throughly enjoyed the Salted Caramel Baked Cheesecake 😍 Only issue I would comment on is the sound/music choices and the value for money on the food. Otherwise would highly recommend for a great evening out 😊

Restaurant week October 2022: This was my friend’s pick of restaurant and happy that she did. Fantastic vibe, friendly waitresses (some also speak Afrikaans) and great food. Portions are modest. I read reviews before going and made sure to ask for the Restaurant Week menu. They do still then ask you if you are sure (in a nice way).It did turn out to be their usual specials three course menu and not like other restaurants who put a special menu together for restaurant week. That said, it was beautiful, flavorful food and well priced as it was indeed plated and served in a fine dining setting and way. We went for dinner and catch up on a Thursday evening. Not to forget the Big Tree in the middle of the restaurant that makes quite a statement. Loved the Eastern decor to match. Great experience.

Visited this cocktailbar on a Wednesday night, where it was actually one of the only places that opened their doors in the long street on a Wednesday night. From the outside it looked a little flashy, but when entering we got dimpled in an eastern style kind of cocktailbar with warm lights, soft materials and red colors all over the place. The cocktail masters really did a professional show when making the cocktails and quality is guaranteed! At the end we were looking for a place to dance, which was possible in front of the live DJ and all other tables. Definitely worth a visit after your diner!

Duck Spring Rolls = 🔥 Great vibe, great atmosphere, the food SLAPS. I don’t dish out compliments easily but this place is a certified BANGER. Drinks are great, service can just be quite slow. Besides that it’s a must go.

Very cute, hip restaurant! Has a live tree growing in the middle (you’ll have to duck 😂) Small plates (tapas) and we shared quite a few. Creative drinks as well! Neighborhood is a little sketchy (our driver wouldn’t leave the van!) but definitely worth the effort! And so affordable!

We went to this amazing restaurant on a Sunday and had incredible food to share. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. I recommend the butter curry chicken if you like something warm and the tuna tartare if you like something cold. The chocolate brownie was also amazing. The meze platter was also perfect as a starter for all five of us.

We called to book a table and they told us it was fully booked, we called again and used a different name (English name) and a table was available lol. Funny. We were basically the only black people there. I think this restaurant needs some restructuring, diversity is a good thing, inclusion is even way better. To he honest I had no idea that places like these still existed in Cape Town. You can do better!

I’m in the middle on this one. First impressions? I’m not sure why there is no covid screening? Not even sanitiser or temp checks? That was definitely a bad impression as i did not feel safe. Service is good, they are busy but were still attentive- so I tipped. we went for a romantic dinner for 2 and unfortunately we could barely hear ourselves from the noise of the music and people. It’s also so cramped. Food: the beef fillet combination is delicious! The ribeye was tasteless, I wish I sent it back but we were so frustrated with the noise after asking to be moved multiple times (which we understood it was busy) we eventually just left. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be keen to return.

This place is the best restaurant I have ever been to in my last 3 years of traveling around the world. Last year it was very nice as well, but the new manager Chris really brought up another level of energy to the place. Can’t wait for the COVID restrictions to be gone so the place can play it’s legendary music again🤩

This venue has been around for many years, unlike many others ventures that sadly did not make it, the quality of food, service and ambience has been consistent from day one. Still one of our favourite places in Cape Town. A must for any visitor to CT. Keep up the good work guys, well done. R

Perfect for a date or intimate dinner with friends - this restaurant has a great vibe, makes you feel like you’re in Tulum with a live DJ. They have amazing food served tapas style and really original cocktails (each with a special twist). We loved the grilled calamari, truffle polenta and chicken curry. Only downside was that service was a little slow

  • 2/5 Rogan H. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful decor. Thought the music didn’t suit the vibe though. Food was good but nothing to write home about. I’m not a fan of any place that charges for water. Our waitress was great but there was this other lady helping bring food and clear dishes with a very indignant demeanor, speaking harshly, very unnecessary.

I've been to Asoka before, and had a great experience. But this time was different. Firstly, they decided to strictly enforce their "dress code" on a day where the temperature was 30 degrees in the evening. Never mind that another member of our party was already inside and wearing slip slops and shorts, I had to make a 45 minute round trip to go home and change into jeans and boots to have the privilege of entry. Then, once inside, the service was what you'd expect at a Spur. Cocktails were of uneven quality, with wildly varying tastes for the same drink between rounds. Multiple orders were taken or delivered wrong, and at one point my fiancee's drink order was completely forgotten. Finally, the music at this sit-down bar restaurant without a dance floor was obnoxiously loud, to the extent that coming home our ears are ringing the same way as after a night out clubbing. We asked them to turn it down at one point, which they did (a little); and then they slowly turned it up to max volume again over the course of 10 minutes as if we wouldn't notice that we can't hear what the person across the table is saying. Food was great, drinks were passable but hideously overpriced, service was bad, environment was bad. Basically Stones with good food but 10 times the price.

Lovely location. Staff very warm and friendly. We had mushrooms tacos, corn and feta salsa, tomato, avo and sour cream: there was a smidgen of a sign of a mushroom, no corn in sight but beans instead (not mentioned in the menu) that stole the show. Duck spring rolls: a bone resembling a small dinosaur was uncovered inside the spring rolls. The staff was apologetic and took away the piece of bone to the chef. Very nice the stem broccoli florets and mushrooms and gorgonzola arancini. Wonderful environment.

Absolutely stunning place. Love my cocktails so was nice to have a very different selection to choose from. Food was mouthwatering and burst with so much flavour. Will definitely be back as they run a special on Monday evenings and then there's Asoka Tuesdays too

Food was incredible. Drinks were good & ambiance was beautiful! Tree in the center is 180 years old and the building was built around it. Tons of branches and other plants inside. Food pictured from left to right is ostrich filet, butter chicken, then below is grilled prawns and salmon. All were so flavorful and cooked well!

I had been coming here frequently since late last year until April this year mostly on Tuesday nights for a good time, starting of with a live jazz band and a Dj later after that. My co-workers would call it Asoka Tuesdays, a booking is imperative or else you’ll stand in a long queue outside so make sure that you make a booking and don’t arrive too early, I think they open at 17:30 and Jazz band starts at 19:30 until 21:30 or 20:00 until 22:00. Reservations are made by call & email. Their cocktails are amazing and I’ve had the best cocktails here! So do give them a try!

This place offers a unique experience, a hip concept and ambiance. Our choice included three tapas each and we sampled some cocktails. Overall, Asoka is a cool spot.

Really loved this place. From the candles and incense, the wonderful, helpful staff eager to alter the menu to make it gluten-free friendly to the cosy, relaxing atmosphere. Well priced great venue, even on a Monday night. Would love to visit near the end of the week. Only downside was I found the low seating a little uncomfortable when eating. NB. Service of 12.5% is automatically added to bills so careful on tipping.

Such a pleasant experience to spend the night at Asoka with beautiful decor. The cocktails were fantastic and the food was delicious. I was most impressed with the service, it was prompt and very professional with friendly waiters that I could see adapted to the vice of each table. I can highly recommend the gin mojito with ginger in it, the duck spring rolls and the chilly garlic prawn. But honestly, everything was delicious.

The place had an awesome vibe, the food was amazing and our server was a literal gem. So patient in navigating the menu with us. Only concern was lack of covid protcols followed😔. However this place is a jewel and would come again, a tad in the future. Great atmosphere, perfect place to take a date for an Asian style cuisine. The sharing portions are amazing for groups to pick and choose from. Reiterate a gem

  • 4/5 Azania A. 3 years ago on Google
Great host, Frankie. Beautiful interior that’s warm and inviting. The courtyard, right next to the famous tree is a particular mention. Great 3 course special that can be shared at the table between three when each person orders a different combination to the other. The steak tartare was amazing! It convinced me that beef could easily be a sushi ingredient. Cocktails pricey, we stuck to beer and water; tea and Diet Coke (they don’t have zero). All in all, they have a lovely crew who meet needs you never thought you had! A proper Cape Town establishment that’s held up and corrected past wrongs.

I was utterly impressed by the service we received and with the dinner special currently happening is excellent value for money. The food and flavour profiles were superb. The music creates a modern vibe for its diners and the sultry, dark atmosphere truly adds to the experience. A must for young professionals looking to explore new tastes and flavour profiles! 10/10 would recommend.

Very vibey place; it would have been a great place to spend the evening if it weren’t for the fact we were still in a global pandemic. Waitresses not wearing mask (even the trainee), no recording our names or temperature, no sanitizing at entrance. Overcrowded to the point where people were physically and constantly in each other’s space, at both our table and the overcrowded bar. Oh and then there was the small thing of a 45 min wait for 3 cocktails (‘they just take a little while to make’). Otherwise drinks and food were decent, no complaints on that front but the above just really not good in my humble opinion.
