The place looks so promising. Quaint, authentic looking, intimate. The execution is poor though. I was so disappointed because the food was highly mediocre and flavourless for the price. The quality of fish was good but not outstanding. This is important especially for sashimi. I was very hungry amd dissatisfied and stopped eating somewhere around the 7th small plate (which we were sharing between 4). It wasn't filling me or satisfying my taste buds. The best things on the menu are the tuna tartare, the tempura prawn and miso ice cream. Sushi is pedestrian. Save your money and rather visit Izikaya Matsuri for authentic and high quality japanese.

What can I say besides a waste of time. That is if you aren’t a tourist or part of the pretentious 1%. The food is priced four times than what you would think. The waiters are arrogantly watching over your shoulder every second expecting you to order more. The ambiance is welcoming and beautiful, but seriously only come here to impress your colleagues or foreign family members. You’d be better off eating Maggi noodles from Pick n Pay. Bland, frozen sea food, with no care. I assure you they aren’t worth it. Anyone with tastebuds can tell you that.

My favourite sushi restaurant in Cape Town. So perfect for a romantic date night! The quality of fish is some of the best I’ve had, especially the tuna. They have delicious Japanese Yuzu beer and a nice selections of wines and other hot dishes, obsessed with this place! The vibe here is cozy and relaxing, so zen. The service is also really good and the staff is friendly and efficient

Avoid - Racist owner. He came to table of my friends and said "ever since the Blacks took over, we have load shedding and electricity problems". This is of course false and it’s racist to blame a race for such issues. And yes, there were friends of different ethnicities present. To my friends’ comment that is was rude and racist, owner said he thought they are educated enough to understand what he said, and stated that he is not racist. Disgraceful and disgusting, avoid this place.

Excellent. World class. We came for lunch and it was a phenomenal experience. I think the owner served us and it was as much a educational experience as it was a dining experience. The restaurant is as quiet and relaxing as a spa and the food is out of this world. The owner let us taste the the glasses of wine we wanted to order, we received complimentary dishes and he gave us a lot of information about each dish. We were made to feel like valued guests and the whole experience was fantastic. Special mention the the ceviche and the green tea crepe :) Anyone who has given this place a bad review doesn’t understand Japanese dining and prefers grocery store deep fried sushi. Complete degenerates.

After reading the reviews on the pricey restaurant I was concerned. Food prices very much on par price wise to a mid to high end restaurant, but boy oh boy the food was amazing. Drinks are expensive. My wife and I both had starters (really good) and mains (Duck & Prawn Noodles) and was as if I was back in Japan. Super tasty and well presented. Food is reasonably priced while drinks are expensive. My thoughts are if they drop their prices on the drinks more people would order it to try. We only had a small house Sake and water.

Despite being low season, I booked my reservation one week in advance and was appalled that I got a Dineplan Cancellation of my booking only 2 hours before the planned seating. This meant that for my special dinner I had no good alternatives as they were all booked out. I’m an overseas visitor that grew up in Cape Town, there are hundreds of very loyal and exciting restaurants that will take your patronage. Don’t settle for a place like this that will close when they don’t have enough heads (no wonder) without even the common decency of a phone call. Absolutely appalled!

Had booked a table for 6 in advance during Indaba conference, when all restaurants are full. Just received a call from a guy saying that he has to cancel my reservation for "medical reason". Im sure they are privatising for another company. If you lie, just make sure you lie well! So unprofessional. Will make sure no one from my company ever eat in this restaurant.

I can not even begin to explain the lovely evening we’ve had. The atmosphere is cosy and warm and every staff member was attentive and friendly. The owner Scott is so lovely, kind and his generosity was simply something you don’t find elsewhere. The food was incredible. We were treated with probably the best food we’ve had in Cape Town. Tuna tartare, clams in a brown butter sauce, chevice, duck udon noodles and more. We were so thankful at the end of our meal, not just for the food, but the lovely spirit in which it was served. We’ll forever want to come back. All our love and gratitude!

This is a beautiful, elegant restaurant. The décor is serene and the space is warm and comfortable, which is very important on a cold winter's night. The service is excellent. The food is absolutely delicious, and varied, including sushi, grilled options, tempura, and soups. The Japanese-inspired cocktails are delicious. I tried the Asian Mary, which was far more delicious than any other Bloody Mary I have tasted. Highlights of the evening were the beef, duck and yellowtail grill, the mixed vegetable tempura, the seafood soup and the miso ice cream.

My son met Scott by chance and he invited him to eat there (my son is a chef) we had the most wonderful experience, An authentic Japanese restaurant in Cape Town, amazing hosting, food and dining experience. Would recommend all to try this unique restaurant. Thank you Scott

WORST place I have ever been to. The food took two hours to be served and it was nothing but disappointing. Fish is thickly cut and gave an instant bad after taste. Finally, the service was reallly bad andddd not hygienic.

Managed to dine in on our last night in Capetown. What a perfect meal to end our exhilarating 12 days in South Africa. The Soya Paper rolls with prawns and scallops, tempura oysters, the Sea soup were some of the notable dishes we had. Service was 2nd to none and we throughly enjoyed our meal. Kudos to the host !

Just wow. The food was amazing. The miso was the best I have ever had. The sushi was incredibly fresh and had a perfect ratio of rice to fish. The wasabi was also super hot and genuine, as was the ginger. The mussels were flavourful and the noodles perfectly cooked. The warm sake was also divine. Lastly, the cherry blossom and sesame ice cream is a must have and rounded off the meal perfectly. You must visit! But it is quite pricey!

What an awesome food and service experience - tick on the bucket list - from arriving to the time we left we were given exceptional service and made to feel welcome and special - the discrete outside of the venue hides the true beauty of the décor inside, and the food speaks for itself. We had a late lunch of authentic Japanese dishes which was a real rush of flavours and textures we rarely have the privilege to experience in South Africa - the service just built on the already phenomenal food and we were advised on which dishes to experience. On more than one occasion we were brought some samples of other dishes and drinks to try out as well as given some interesting info about the sampled dishes and drinks. Even if it's the last thing you do, visit Kyoto 🤤😘👌🏻

Amazing, authentic experience and very broad menu. Beautiful interior with elegant seating and a gorgeous bar. Alcohol here is very pricey so would not recommend drinking, except the wines (good selection)

The menu has a good variety of dishes I haven't seen in other Japanese restaurants. Friendly staff. Japanese curry was delicious. Definitely try their Asian Mary cocktail.

Had a delicious dinner here! Since it was our honeymoon, Scott the owner personally checked on us and even shared a taste of his favorite plates! Tuna tartare, ceviche, tempura, and Japanese curry were all delicious. The sashimi was fresh and light and clean. Great spot that we got lucky to walk across the street from our hotel to find. Highly recommend for an authentic Japanese experience. And yes, it’s high quality sushi, so the prices are representative of that. Highly recommended for a nice Japanese dinner experience.

Sublime sushi! I had the warm scallops in their shell to start, shared the chef's choice for mains (beautiful fresh traditional sushi) and then finished off with the delicious miso crepe with miso ice cream... Very highly recommend! Quite pricey so will keep this one for special occasions but really delicious

Last ate: 27 June 2022 - Home delivery I ordered the 18 piece chef’s choice sashimi platter. Nice variety, but it lacked overall balance. There should have been more rich / fatty cuts on the platter. 3.5 / 5

The owner - Scott was so welcoming and warm. He took immediate interest to show us how to enjoy their food so we gave him the reigns and let him choose our entire meal. If you're so lucky, please let him do so. Learning about each dish and why it was important to him, and what certain elements set his restaurant apart from the rest made the experience the best I had in my 3 weeks in Cape Town. Many thanks, I will certainly be back! 🙏

Beautiful restaurant, food is quite pricey but worth it for the large portions, all exceptionally fresh & delicious. We really enjoyed our sushi & wagyu ramen is to die for! Good selection of Japanese beer.
