I finally found it! While the main museum is closed for renovations, there’s a temporary exhibition in the same street in the Banco de la Republica building - blink and you’ll miss the entrance! It won’t take you long to see the current exhibit, but it’s well-presented and informative, with explanations in Spanish and English.

Museum is free to enter, the main learning areas have AC which is nice. There’s a few short films if you’re into that! It’s cozy but small so don’t expect to be here over 45 mins!

Really informative exhibition with exquisite artefacts and a very nice and exhaustive audiovisual presentation about the history of the Zenú culture from its inception to its present day struggles. The long ocarina music piece in the first audiovisual room was incredible!

A really nice, free museum with displays of the arts and gold artifacts of this region. Air conditioned with very clean bathrooms. Definitely should watch the videos of the irrigation systems and the Zenu culture and their artistry. Highly recommend.

Free, but quite small. It's actually only one room with a few dozen artifacts and maybe a dozen paragraphs. Some of the artifacts are pretty neat though. It's a nice 10 minute excursion to drop in to

The Museum of Gold in Cartagena is one of the branches of the famous Colombian Gold Museum, which is located in Bogotá. The Cartagena branch is located in the historic old town of Cartagena and showcases a collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts from various indigenous cultures that inhabited the region. The museum provides insight into the artistic and cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of Colombia, their mythology, and their relationship with gold. The museum features exhibits that showcase gold objects, pottery, and jewelry from the Zenú, Tayrona, and Quimbaya cultures. There are also displays of various metals and minerals that were used in the production of gold artifacts. The museum offers guided tours in both Spanish and English and provides visitors with information on the history of gold in Colombia. Overall, the Museum of Gold in Cartagena is a worthwhile but short attraction for those interested in learning about the indigenous cultures and artistic traditions of Colombia.

Small but well-curated museum. Can't beat the price of free. They do a great job explaining the cultures of the nearby tribes. They have some interactive QR codes where you hear the music of the instruments you're looking at, and some great videos in a separate hall showcasing local artisanal work like hat weaving and gold work.

Fantastic free museum with really good exhibitions and informative videos about the Zenú people and others living in this area. Valentina speaks perfect English and gave me the best informal tour of the gallery when I asked her a question - thanks Valentina for making my visit so special!

(Translated by Google) The Zenú Gold Museum in Cartagena is part of the Gold Museum network of the Bank of the Republic of Colombia. It preserves and exhibits the works of goldsmiths and ceramics of the old zenúes, that by means of colossal works of hydraulic engineering lived two millennia ago in the plains of the Colombian Caribbean, and highlights the culture and traditions of the current zenúes. (Original) El Museo del Oro Zenú en Cartagena es parte de la red del Museo del Oro del Banco de la República de Colombia. This museum is currently closed for renovations, circa spring 2019, but there is a bit of the exhibits over in the bank library down the way. Ask a security guard and he'll help direct you the correct place. The gold and other items of pre-columbian art are pretty amazing and are one of the best attractions in the ciudad vieja, at least in my opinion.

The Gold Museum of Cartagena is small and quaint, if you are in the area it is worth seeing. The museums here are so small that we saw both the Golf museum and the Emerald museum in about 40 minutes total. Back to the Gold Museum, one can read of the history behind gold in the Columbia region. Small figures are showcased which may have been created by the original indigenous locals of the Columbia region. One of the coolest figures was of a bird that I saw on the Rosario Islands of Columbia, very exotic and cool. The day we went was our last day in Columbia which was also another day to enjoy the Walled City of Cartagena. Security guards do exist at the door to prevent any riff raff from bothering those inside the museum, if one has any issue then tell the security. Well worth the time spent there viewing the pre-Columbian artifacts to include the Zenu culture gold exhibits and the musical relics. We were lucky enough to view the displays while accompanied by one of the staff anthropologists. He made the displays come alive when describing the creation and uses of the various artifacts. The artistic and technical skills of the ancient Zenu people are amazing. This is a can't miss spot to visit when visiting Cartagena.

The museum is really interesting, but small compared to the one in Bogotá. The main thing is to learn about the Zenú people and their life. I found the different weaving patterns by the different groups also very interesting. It is nice that it is free and there are English translations of the texts.

Beware as you enter the temporary exhibition in the National Bank. We were followed in by someone pretending to be the museum curator, cornered, talked at for ages and ages in broken English (it’s a tiny space so couldn’t escape) and then asked for money. Like many, many other experiences in Colombia, it’s a scam. A tiring, annoying, scam. Worst of all, it was right under the nose of the actual museum staff and security and they were indifferent, bordering on complicit. That said, the scammer told us one or two things that weren’t already on the walls so maybe the hustle was worth it to know about Incan bat men and fertility rites?! Cool gold stuff though. Deffo worth a trip in, just tell the hustlers to hold off!
