I strongly advice not to waist your money and time here. Specially don’t come if the heat and sun are too strong. If you really feel you want to visit this place I would come very early or at sunset. The line to buy the tickets its usually long and slow but the worst part is the hundreds of street vendors trying to sell you and umbrella, a hat or water. They will be very very pushy and annoying. If you are already here you must have: a hat, big bottle of water and maybe they will ignore you. The ticket is not super expensive but the views are not cool, the museography is non existent, there are no tours unless you paid for private ones and the view from the top is super boring. This fort is more of you explore and google if you have questions. There are a couple of sign with information but it’s boring and not very helpful. I didn’t learn anything at the end. Skip this place and go to city and enjoy a cocktail, you will thank me later.

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is an architectural gem steeped in history. As an avid traveler, I was drawn to this fortress by its rich heritage and stunning panoramic views. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was transported back in time to an era of colonial intrigue and maritime conquest. The sheer scale of the fortifications is awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of its builders. Exploring the labyrinthine tunnels and ramparts, I couldn't help but marvel at the strategic prowess that went into its design. The interactive exhibits dotted throughout the site provided valuable insights into its military significance and the stories of those who defended it. One of the highlights of my visit was ascending to the highest point of the fort, where I was rewarded with breathtaking views of Cartagena's skyline and the shimmering Caribbean Sea beyond. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts or anyone simply looking to soak in the beauty of their surroundings. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share anecdotes and answer any questions I had about the fort's history. Additionally, the well-maintained grounds and facilities ensured a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone in search of unforgettable vistas, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is a must-visit destination in Cartagena. I can't recommend it highly enough – be sure to add it to your itinerary when exploring this vibrant city.

Built in the 1600's to protect the city. It has tunnels and offers great views of the city. A lot of rich history thru out the years. Good way to get exercise climbing to the top of the fort.

Very cool place. Admission is only 25,000 pesos ($6.25 USD) and you’ll spend about an hour walking around and enjoying the scenery. Like others have said, wear sunscreen if you’re out during the sunny part of the day.

It's very nice view, probably the best sunset in Cartagena. The ticket cost 30K COP for foreigners, they accept cards. I recommend to bring some water and snacks if you plan to stay for a while. The Castillo / Castle is not so big, I spend 45m including lot of pics, videos, sunset 🌇 time and enjoying the 360 view. They close around 19:00, last entrance is 18:00. I recommend to get there 17~17:30, is not so hot and it's the perfect time for the golden light. Didn't have line, was easy to buy ticket and is max 5m walking to the top.

We got there early to beat the heat and the crowds. It’s a beautiful place to experience some history and learn. The security guards were very friendly and helpful with navigating the fort as well. I would recommend visiting this place.

Must visit castle at Cartagena. The views of the city are outstanding, while heritage is well preserved. The tour takes about an hour long, and there are cool tunnels on the way. Street vendors could be somewhat annoying.

Highly recommend a tour guide, as there is nothing to explain the history of this place once there. If you’re not into history, then I would skip it. The photos are fun to take with the canons. Bring water, no shade unless your walking through the tunnel.

The Museum of the Inquisition is a place that gives you pause to think. Cartagena and much of Latin America possess so much beauty but beauty built on a dark past. The displays on the first floor were well presented with good signage in English and a even more comprehensive in Spanish. The second floor covers more of the history of Cartagena but unfortunately their is quite a bit less English in the event that your Spanish isn't great. Overall it was a good experience having gone with our three children (ages 9-13), all of them asked good questions stimulated by the displays and information presented. Tough to ask for more than that from a museum as a parent!

Incredible piece of important history. I recommend either having a good guide to show you around or plan on doing a lot of personal research to fully understand the ramifications that this fortress has played in history.

A decent fort, and some interesting historymim the area. But there are very limited information boards or guides to the actual fort. Once you have stood in line (it is very hot)/and walked up, you likely will need only 40 or so minutes walking around all aspects. So a nice to be and have see. But easy ti move on.... It.may be worth hiring a guide, but this adds more cost

Beautiful historic fortress with amazing catagena overview. They charge tickets differently for the locals and foreigners. The weather can be very hot and sunny, so make sure you wear sunglasses, sun scream or go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Old castle with quite a bit of history in Cartagena. Was fairly crowded when I visited. Cool tunnels to walk through to get to or come down the top level. Good panoramic view of the surrounding area. Wide open area at top level, good to wear a hat or bring an umbrella

If you love ancient architecture and history, this is a great place to visit in Cartagena. I purchased a ticket and wandered on my own through the castle, but I noticed there were many people with guides if that's more your thing. I recommend buying some water before you go in because you won't get another chance until you get to the store at the top of the castle that supports a local school for underprivileged kids in the Gethsemane neighborhood. There are great views of the city from the castle and many photo ops. The only downside of my visit was the two cruise ships that offloaded passengers right about the time I arrived, so it was crowded. There was a delightful man dressed in historic costume playing a trumpet who was extremely grateful for a small tip for enjoying the music. A dollar goes a long way for him.

Amazing structure. Totally worth the visit. Definitely recommend visiting this fort (Castillo). I also recommend going to the “Hospital” they have AC there which is great because it gives you a break from the heat and also you can learn more about the history behind the fortification.

Great views of the city and some cool tunnels. The place isn't that big, it's pretty much all outdoors except for a few tunnels, so there's no rooms of exhibits or anything like that. The guides tell you why the fort was built and a little about some design considerations that you'd probably miss on your own.

Very disappointing. Not much in English. The inquisition part was very small and had very few artifacts, most of it was pictures but even they were few. Rest of the museum was about the history of Cartagena all in Spanish. The best part of the museum is the building and the courtyard. But you can look at beautiful buildings for free walking around in centro histórico.

You can see almost all the city from there. Buy souvenirs there because you can't find them in other places in town. Visit the tunnels and walk around the old paths in this marvelous castle. You shouldn't miss it!

Quite an impressive structure, with 2 cool ships at the top. The one shop has entirely hand crafted items from small toys to sombreros. It does require a fair amount of steep, uphill walking to reach, but it can be done in flip flops with a full water bottle. The tunnels at the top aren’t much to write about, but they’re creepy to walk through; mind your head too.

The castle was built on a hill dominating the city. It was built in 1657. There are many underground passages. Admission is 27,000 COP per person. Children under 6 are free. Note that you will be asked for a passport or ID for the child. There is free parking at the entrance. Of course, you will see many people saying "I will take care of your vehicle". It is enough to give 1000-2000 COP. There is a gift shop in the castle. Prices are usually normal, not too high. You can also reach the castle on foot from the city center. If you come to Cartagena, you must stop by.

Impressive huge forth with brilliant view, but it could be improved. We went there on Tuesday after 3pm. It was also rainy a bit and probably because of this we did not need to wait too long, around 10 minutes. After going in we strolled around and tried to figure out which way to go, there are no signs to help you out. We did not pay for a private tour, so just went where we thought would be the best and sometimes checked the directions of the tours going. The tunnels and the view was great. There are descriptions here and there, but most of them repetitive and does not worth reading. Wikipedia or Google is more informative and interesting. There are no shades or trees, so if it is hot and sunny sunscreen or and umbrella can be useful. Overall it is a great experience, but it could be improved by better signs, information boards or maybe a caffe at the top.

One of biggest and finest examples of a Spanish fort from the colonial era you will find. It is a must see if you are interested in history and are in Cartagena. It is better with a tour that can give you some background but it is still worth visiting on your own. Exploring the tunnels and taking in the views is fun. But be warned, it is extremely hot and there is no shade there so bring lots of water and a hat and, if possible, go early in the morning or in the evening. The fort is well-preserved and worth seeing.

Nice stop first thing in the morning. We started our day here, trying to beat the heat. Very impressive fort built atop the hill. Steep walk up the ramps to the top of the hill. If you can get a tour guide, lots of information on the history of and importance of this fort. There are a couple of tunnels and walkways to go down as you explore your way around the fort.

If you are into history (and you know before hand what happened in this area) then this is an interesting spot to visit. If your time in the city is short and you are not so interested in history then I recommend you skipping this spot and instead enjoy the old town streets. You will learn nothing by visiting this spot, unless you hire a private guide somewhere else . There are no historical explanations or remarks Even tho this is named as a “castle” it is actually better labeled as a fortress . This is a concrete fortress with some narrow tunnels , that’s it. Unless you are a history person the only thing to enjoy is to take some pictures at the top.I also feel that the balance of cost / entertainment is bad. Maybe more interesting than the fortress itself is the monument nearby which has a stolen coin made by the British empire to celebrate what they thought would be a victory . This one you can access for free

I would visit it twice. Once with a tour guide that can tell you all about the history of this fort and then once again all by yourself so you can explore the tunnels, take beautiful pictures of the city and also just to stay longer if you want. It's almost 40.000 pesos for the entrance which is very accesible. Be sure to bring water and also a hat because there's not a lot of shade to hide from the sun. It has stairs and a hills you have to walk to get to the best views so if you are someone who has a hard time climbing stairs take that into consideration. Must visit if you go to Cartagena

The best part of the castle for me was the view and the walk-around. I personally am not fond of museums and historical places, although I like to get to know the story of something when it’s a castle or something like this. There is the story spread around, there is also some kind of labyrinth inside the castle which is kind of creepy if you walk in there by yourself, it’s dark with just a few lights and some tourists walking in. I recommend if you’re looking for a different experience than usual, but not if you’re claustrophobic, lol

We walked in without tickets, just bought here. Don't need to buy into the tour guide, they have a spot up at the top called "Hospital" where they offer an informative video of the castle/fortress. PLUS a reprieve from the heat! So fun to walk around the tunnels, they're not too lengthy. Just the right amount of panic before you hit a dead end or the way out. Great way to see the entire city of Cartagena, hence why the structure is here!

Very interesting museum, I highly recommend it. Only giving 4 stars because I really wish it had air conditioning or at least fans 🥵 Note: most is in Spanish, so...learn Spanish 🤷🏼‍♀️ Or take a translator with you. I found the inquisition part of the museum extremely impactful. Worth the visit, for me.

Easy to walk around on the ramps going up. Last set of stairs are not too bad, but you don't miss much by not going up those, there's a lot to see otherwise. Some shade provided by walls, and a tent canopy to stand under at one point. An umbrella could be helpful. Many vendors as you are walking in. If you want to buy something, please do. Otherwise, be prepared to say "no, gracias" a lot. Somewhat interesting for the history. Great views of the city!!!

Explains the history of the region really well. I wish every text was translated to English as well. You still get a lot but if I had to guess I'd say maybe 1 out off 5 exhibit descriptions or just texts on the wall are translated to English. Definitely go have a look at the garden, the tree covering the entirety of it is amazing.

It is a beautiful historic place, the views are fantastic from the castle. I only wish there were more people telling the history of it not just the bus tour guides as we did not arrived with them and so you miss a lot of the interesting facts about the place. One thing to keep in mind is that the street vendors will tell you to buy water or hats before entering, but you are also able to find and buy at the top of the castle at the store.

  • 5/5 Dan R. 2 years ago on Google
Very cool place and has one of the best views of the city when you get to the top. We hired a guide to give us some history of the fortress I highly recommend.

Historic site of Cartagena, is a must visit is you like history, are looking for souvenirs or if you are looking for great views of the city. Is located in the second highest natural hill of the city, entrance is paid at the bottom of the hill and tours are provided in spanish and english (ask for the information beforehand in the ticket booth). The castle is open only until 6:00pm so don't arrive too late but do stay until that time so you don't miss the sunset!

A must visit when in Cartagena. I would recommend going here as soon as they open so that the sun is not as harsh. The tunnels and architectural importance of the castle and its capability to defend the city is worth a visit. A very rich history and a great place to spend and hr or two

  • 4/5 Tina K. 1 year ago on Google
Brilliant architecture and history. Pretty exciting to understand the mindset of the build and getting to explore the tunnels and scale the walls of a fort/castle. The views of the city are pretty awesome from here too.

This is an amazing fortress! So much history to see and experience. The tunnels you could go through were amazing. I highly recommend you pay for the guided tour when you walk through the gates it's totally worth it. This is a must see in cartegena! Beautiful views from up top of the whole city. 👏

A place full of history and many passages! A very fun activity to enjoy with the family. An important fact is that if you have Colombian nationality and carry your ID, you enter for free on the last Sunday of each month. It is important to check the networks!

Not really a castle but an awesome fort with a beautiful global view of Cartagena. We arrived late morning on a sunny day. Not as hot as everyone says. Definitely should bring water nevertheless. Great history and impressive fortification. Definitely worth a visit and should spend 2-3 hours.

  • 4/5 Sanj S. 10 months ago on Google
Must-see place to visit with family or friends. You can do the guided tour. Wish we had done that, it would've been more fun. But as most folks will tell you, come prepared, get water, sun glasses, hat or else you will get cooked in the sun. We did it in 35° heat and it was almost unbearable. You may find relief as you go to the top, the breeze provides some relief (only if you are unobstructed). The flag and fort background is the most photographed spot in entire Cartagena. My recommendation would be to plan your visit such that you are there for sunset. Anyways enjoy!!!

Beautiful fortification, well preserved, you would like to hire a guide to take you through the history of this place. They can be hire at the entrance. Go early, the sun it’s brutal at midday

Worth visiting. This place is huge. A nice place to spend an afternoon. Some parts are undergoing restoration. There's a nice mall a couple of blocks from the entrance.

We visited the castle in April. Its around 90min walk. Don't recommend a tour guide. There is a lot of information boards with historical facts and few benches around to seat and have a rest if needed. There is a small gif shop on the top of the castle, so you can buy some drinks and snacks. Also you will find free toilets that were very clean 👌 I do recommend taking bottel of and a hat or umbrella as most of the day time is very hot up there. The location of the castle is great, amazing view! It's very close to Muralla de Cartagena so you can kill two birds with one stone so to speak. Definitely worth to visit!

An amazing monument that is an obligatory stop while visiting Cartegena. Reaching the top is a little hard, but it will be worth it. You can see the whole city from most of the levels. Be careful to do it during the daytime because the sun is very hard. Bring an unbrella or a hat.

Touring the castle was amazing. Our tour guide Jorge did an outstanding job of explaining all the details of the castle's design and history. I would recommend this for anyone going to Cartagena

  • 4/5 Vegard S. 8 months ago on Google
Fantastic place where you could experience some of the history of Cartagena. The stonework was well preserved, but there was not much else. A few posters were scattered around, but the information was only in Spanish. I might recommend a guided tour if you want to learn more.

  • 5/5 Vinayak R. 5 months ago on Google
Visit this place if you're a military history aficionado as it details Cartagena's early years under Spanish rule, especially when it was under attack from the British. Even though the fort itself is uninspiring, it's history and significance to Cartagena can hardly ever be questioned.

A very nice piece of history! It reminds me of the fort in St. Augustine, FL! A major downside, is that its not very accessible for people with disabilities. My husband has a lot of leg/foot pain from an accident several years ago, and to get to the top of the castle, you must walk up either very steep ramps, or many stairs. We rented a wheelchair for my husband, but the ramps were so steep, it was very difficult to push him up. My brother had to help, and a gentleman from New York also helped push him up one of the ramps! Obviously, we could not explore the tunnels inside the castle, because of the many stairs (which is understandable, as the fort was built many years ago, before wheelchairs, and they want to keep it as authentic as possible and in its original state), but at the same time, it would be nice to create some type of way to allow people with disabilities to explore and experience the castle in all of its beauty!

What a beautiful piece of history. Proud of the Colombian culture This fortress its locate near the historical center and the colorful neighborhood of Getsemani. It’s still in an incredible conservation state. With its big angled walls and its cannons it was the main defense point of Cartagena de Indias and south America itself. The visit of this monument is a must while being in Cartagena. A guided tour would make the visit more meaningful since you will learn all the history and fun facts about the fortress and its surroundings. It has a lot of viewpoints where to admire the beautiful views of Cartagena from all sides. Very recommended. A must!

Interesting history and very impressive. In great views of the city and worth coming to visit. It's massive so you can take as little or as long as you want here. I would recommend bringing water up as it's pretty hot.
