The area is good. Except the part that people sit around and smoke cigarettes, leaving the cigg butt just around the temple. Some play board games there. It is not properly conserved. Some part is still under renovation (earthquake 2015). But the Place is Majestic, beautiful and gives a vibe of ancient times. Museum is still under Renovation. But other parts are beautiful, serene and visit worthy. Good pic point.

Lovely place to visit. Tickets are to cheap for nepali visitors where as it is little but expensive for foreigers, it is around 10 times expensive than nepali visitors tickets. Museum with different items whose shows old memories, items that reflect nepal. There I have found 122 years old Kathmandu city in picture frame. As it is in construction position (2022/06/10). I think construction will be complete in this year and it will be best to visit. Finally, Lovely, peace of Harrison, cultural reflect. Place visit the place once in your life.

It is currently being renovated; so, it is not possible to see everything here. This beautiful place was damaged by the earthquake but due to the efforts of the government and foreign aid, renovation is going well. There is a museum inside this place where they display ancient jewellery. Photography is not allowed there. You can enter the museum by paying a small fee. When it is completely renovated, it will be more exciting to visit this place.

Hanuman Dhoka (Nepali: हनुमान ढोका) is a complex of structures with the Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty in the Durbar Square of central Kathmandu, Nepal. It is spread over five acres. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace (Hanuman Dhoka Darbar in Nepali) gets its name from the stone image of Hanuman, the Hindu deity, that sits near the main entryway. 'Dhoka' means door or gate in Nepali. The buildings were severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake. The eastern wing with ten courtyards is the oldest part dated to the mid 16th century. It was expanded by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century with many temples. Sundari Chok and Mohan Chok in the north part of the palace are both closed. In 1768, in the southeast part of the palace, four lookout towers were added by Prithvi Narayan Shah. The royal family lived in this palace till 1886. They after shifted to Narayanhiti Palace. The stone inscription outside is in fifteen languages. The stone is a jaladroni (drinking fountain) and legend states that for someone who understands all 15 languages, milk instead of water would spring from it. The "Hanuman Dhoka" proper, or Hanuman Gate, is located on the west side of Durbar Square. It is the entry gate to the palace, where a standing statue of Hanuman (monkey god), dated to 1672, guards the palace. Hanuman is decked with a red cloth and an umbrella. The face is smeared with a red paste. On the left is a stone sculpture dated to 1673 of Lord Narasimha (the half-man, half lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu), devouring the demon Hiranyakashipu, which is credited to Pratap Malla period according to an inscription on the pedestal of the image.

This palace was named Hanumandhoka palace when king Pratap Malla installed a statue of Sri Hanuman in front of the main gate in 1672 A.D. The earlier name of the Palace which was known as "Kantipur" city of light was built in the 16th century. Hanuman Dhoka is a complex of structures which served as a Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty. The Hanumandhoka Durbar square is famous for its ancient heritage and monuments. The Palace complex is surrounded by numerous temples of Pagoda, Sikharas and Dome architectural styles. The palace is rich in both tangible and intangible cultural diversity and has a outstanding historical, archaeological and religious value. So, it was enlisted as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1979. The Basantapur Tower ('Basantpur' means "place of Spring") is located on the south of Nasal Chok. It is a nine-storey tower from the top of which a panoramic view of the palace and city could be seen. It is now converted as a museum and opened for public viewing.

Kathmandu's royal palace, known as the Hanuman Dhoka, was originally founded during the Licchavi period (4th to 8th centuries AD), but the compound was expanded considerably by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. Sadly, the sprawling palace was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake and damage was extensive. At the time of research, the main Nasal Chowk courtyard was open and the Tribhuvan Museum was close to reopening, with other buildings closed for reconstruction.

Lots of things and sculptures to see and explore. You get to see the old palace of the Nepali Kings and rulers. You also get to experience the Nepali culture with lots of gods and goddesses everywhere around this place. The pictures are taken during the Indra Jatra festival, where you get to see the living goddess 'Kumari' in chariots and taken around town. Also during this time, the whole door of 'Swet Bhairab' is opened for the week of festivities. If you get a chance visit the durbar inside out and the top of the palace too.

Hanuman Dhoka is a complex of structures with the Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty in the Durbar Square of central Kathmandu, Nepal. The royal family lived in this palace till 1886, where after they shifted to Narayanhiti Palace. The stone inscription outside is in fifteen languages and legend states that if all the 15 are read milk would spring from the middle of stone tablet. Hanuman Gate The "Hanuman Dhoka" proper, or Hanuman Gate, is located on the west side of Durbar Square. Nasal ChokEdit Ahead of the main entrance, adjoining the Hanuman Temple is the Nasal Chok courtyard ('Nasal' means "dancing one") named after the image of dancing Shiva located on the east side of the square. This is the square where Birendra was crowned as king in 1975, on the platform in the middle of the courtyard. At the south side of the courtyard, stands the nine storey Basantapur Tower. While the courtyard was built during Malla Period, the buildings around it, which depict intricately carved doorways, windows, and struts, were creations of the Rana rulers. Nasal Chok is rectangular in a north–south direction with entrance from the northwest corner. Near the entrance is an intricately carved doorway with carvings of four gods that leads to the private apartments of Malla king. A golden image of Maha Vishnu is seen now in an open veranda on the eastern wall, as the original Maha Vishnu Temple in the square, which housed this image, was destroyed in the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. Other structures in the courtyard are: the Audience Chamber of the Malla kings in the northeast corner, the throne of the Malla kings in an open verandah and portraits of the Shah Kings. The Panch Mukhi Hanuman Temple (five faced Hanuman) dedicated to Hanuman is in the northeast corner of the Nasal Chok. It has a unique design of five circular roofs. The temple priest is the only person who can enter the sanctum of the temple. The Basantapur Tower ('Basantpur' means "place of Spring") is located on the south of Nasal Chok. It is a nine-storey tower from the top of which a panoramic view of the palace and city could be seen. Erotic images are carved on the struts of this tower. This tower is one of the four red towers that King Prithvi Narayan Shah built delimiting the four old cities of the Kathmandu Valley namely, the Kathmandu or the Basantapur Tower, the Kirtipur Tower, the Bhaktapur Tower or Lakshmi Bilas, and the Patan or Lalitpur Tower.

I was thoroughly impressed by the rich history and cultural heritage displayed in the museum. The museum offers a wealth of information on the history of Nepal and the fine artistic masterpieces of Nepalese arts and culture that are truly a sight to behold. Both local and international tourists should definitely add Hanuman Dhoka to their must-visit list. A truly exceptional experience! The museum closes at 5pm local time so plan accordingly.

Lots of heritage and monuments to see. Lot of reconstruction work is also going on. Pathetic or no public facilities like toilets and sitting areas. Bought museum ticket 300 NPR per person from SAARC and 30 NPR for nepal citizens, ok, but Nothing much is there to see inside and it is not worth paying so much. Ladies Toilet inside museum was dirty and no flush working. No maintenance at all, that too inside museum. There is no gents toilet other than urinals.

Nothing positive can be said about this place. Poorly maintained and full of filth. If it cannot be maintained properly and if it cannot be kept neat and clean then it should be closed for the Tourists. It has a rich history behind it and maintenance and cleanliness should be as per its status.

Hanumandhoka Durbar square is the center of cultural and historical core of Kathmandu valley. The Hanumandhoka Durbar square is famous for its historical heritage and monuments specially for hanumandhoka palace which was the residence and administrative center from ancient times. An office named Hanumandhoka Durbar harecha Adda (Hanumandhoka palace management and conservation office) was established by Nepal Government for conservation and restoration of the Hanumandhoka palace and it's historical arts, crafts and monuments under the Cultural, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ministry . The old centre of the city the Hanumandhoka was a Royal Palace since a beginning, which located at the heart of the city. This centrally located Palace has been became special important for ancient ruler ever since the Licchavi Period. The area around the present site of the Hanumandhoka was called "Koligrama" or "Dakshin Rajkula". The earlier name of the Palace was known as "Kantipur" city of light or beautiful city during the early medieval period. Ratna Malla (1482 AD) was the first king of independent Kathmandu, who is the second son of Yaksha Mall, who powerfully ruled over in great "Bhatgaon". However, the Bhasa Vanshavali credit for the founding of the Kathmandu to king Gunkamdeva. The Hanumandhoka area contains the divers monuments having outstanding courtyard surrounded by Royal Palace, temples, waterspouts, gardens etc. with full or open spaces. Unique festivals, rituals, sculptures, courtyards, temples etc. are aspects of living culture and national pride of the country. The palace named Hanumandhoka when profound art lover Pratap Malla installed an icon of Hanuman in front of the main gate in 1672 A.D. With span of centuries the present Hanumandhoka Palace complex and others monuments were built between the 15th century to 20th century. Every king from Ratna Malla to Prithivi Bir Bikram Shah added to the palace or at least repaired or renovated some parts of it, but the most important contribution were those of Mahendra Malla, Pratap Malla and Prithivi Narayan Shah. Mahendra Malla who minted the coins, few changes were made to the Palace and built Kotilingeshvar, Jagannath, Taleju and Mahendreshvar temples which still stands today. Pratap Malla built many monuments such as image of Hanuman, Kalvairab, Swaitvairab and famous Sundari Chowk and Mohankali Chowk. King Prithivi Narayan Shah built Basantapur Nine Storied Palace in this complex. They are the unique creation of Malla and Shah Dynasties. Representing as a open air museum here are more than ten courtyards. Four courtyards have been already opened for general public. Now three memorial museum galleries and many sections have been exihibited with basic amenities to the general public as well as tourists.
