this building is so so beautiful. The courtyard is covered in tiles that are donated by the portugese king in 1795 (according to my guide), and the inside is covered in gold. I cant even begin to describe it. There are so many statures and sculptures , its breaktaking. Theres also a cemetery of some sort where some ancient bones lay. I heard it also contains the living quarters for some reverened father. This place was really beautiful and its a must see if you ever are in Salvador

Give me GOLD! Wow! So impressive - you can understand why the Catholics used such opulence to convince and convert the non-believers because it is just as amazing as what it was a couple of hundred years when it was first built. In the main part of the church, just sit and be amazed but the splendid glory of Brazil’s former wealth.

(Translated by Google) The church demonstrates the care and attention that the old builders had with their works. The degree of detail is eye-catching and there are those who feel a heavy energy inside, but for those who believe in it, the energy comes from underground, from those who were buried there a long time ago. As I am quite skeptical about this, I can say that I felt a pressure on my head, but I believe it was because of the gold-covered walls and sculptural details, which in addition to making my phone lock when taking the photos, left me with certain headache. The climate is really heavy, there are many details, there are many stories, the smell of old wood and the sound of footsteps and buzz echo inside you and invite you out. They have a lot to see in the short time you want to stay.

(Translated by Google) Cultural heritage, the church is a charm. Every detail conveys the richness of the history of the place. The feeling is that we go back in time and are part of the events. It is sensational, normally the fee of 5.00 is charged to enter, and it is forbidden to touch any object or sit on the benches. (Original) Patrimônio cultural, a igreja é um encanto. This incredibly ornate Baroque church is actually the second one on this site (the original was destroyed during the Dutch invasion of Brazil). Construction of the current church began in 1686. The interior is covered with 850 kg (about 1874 pounds) of gold leaf and is a sight to behold. The Franciscan church and convent have the largest number of azulejos (the blue & white Portuguese ceramic tiles), 55,000, of any church in Latin America. The church is open to the public, and if you are anywhere near here, you won’t forgive yourself if you don’t visit. They charge only R$5 (about $1 US) to enter and you are allowed to take non-flash photographs. The actual name of the church is The Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis (“Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco”).

Imperdible sumamente recomendable.

I found it the best Church in central Salvador. So much history and so much gold leaf on display. Also the intricate carvings are so life like. Outside you have the whole "good and bad" murals in old Portuguese blue tiles. From birth to death, they deliver a true education in daily life. This in a the time when books were a rarity. Here the rich or poor would gaze at the murals and learn what was right or wrong in life. Do spend some time seeing them. English and Portuguese titles. Simple loo provided. Do ask.

Gorgeous and interesting Church We stumbled across this during our walk around Pelourinho and what a gem it is. There were flowers laid down the aisle of the chapel so I assume there was soon to be a wedding there and it looked truly stunning. Walking around to can go into the Throne Room and Crypts followed by other rooms with information and artifacts. Just after the Crypts there was an outside area but we didn't venture out there as it seemed this was the reception area with the same flowers as the Chapel so likely for the wedding but it was gorgeous.

Igreja e convento de Sao Francisco De Asis is a highly recommended stop on your next visit to Pelourinho Salvador. It's stunning from the outside and lights up beautifully at night. The real beauty however is seen in the fine detailing and elaborate use of gold on the inside. The cost to enter is only R$5 / US$1( in March 2022 ), a price thats more than worth it. The pictures really don't do it justice. They don't provide tour guides so I would advise visiting as a part of a walking tour of pelourinho, to get details on the history. Definitely add it to your list of must do in salvador.
