When I was in highschool my favorite restaurant to eat at was Nan King Road Bistro. The owner was the friendliest guy ever and the food was absolutely incredible every single time without fail. Every dish was a symphony of perfection. When it closed, it was as of a piece of my heart closed forever, too. So, when I decided to look up a quiet, unassuming Chinese restaurant that I frequently drove by, Wenchang Dumpling Restaurant, and saw that they had a mind-boggling 4.9/5 stars on Google reviews, I immediately thought back to Nan King Road Bistro. Imagine my absolute euphoria when, reading through the glowing reviews, I read a response from the owner saying that in fact... THIS PLACE IS THE SAME RESTAURANT!!! They just moved due to the exorbitant rents of 9th and Irving! I just got home from my first visit to Wenchang. My friends and I ordered wonton soup, honey sesame chicken, black pepper steak, crab rangoons, shrimp dumplings, and green tea. Everything was as amazing as I remember! Large generous portions of piping hot homemade food- true comfort. 9/5 stars.

As soon as you walk in the restaurant, you know you’re in for some good eating. The decorations and music have that family business charm that makes you feel comfortable and nostalgic. And the food lives up to those lofty expectations. Each dumpling looks hand made with care and has that home made taste you associate with your mother’s cooking. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. It had me grinning ear to ear as soon as I stepped in. Please, please support this business and make them the neighborhood institution that they deserve to be.

Highly recommend this if you’re craving coconut curry chicken, i would’ve given them 5 stars if only it had coconut flavor in it. But the curry was really good along with the chicken & rice. I also wish they would offer brown rice as a substitute over the steam white rice. Friendly staff, family owned. A small place but they have enough tables to fit around i would say 20 people. They also have two tables outside if u plan on dining outside. Overall nice place in the Richmond District if you’re craving Chinese food.

These dumplings and buns were made with love: right size, taste, texture and consistency to each one. Clean space and friendly service. On the corner of a quiet neighborhood. Taste is homemade & authentic.

Stopped by WenChang Dumpling on our way from Golden Gate Park and do not regret at all. The food was nice and hot, flavorful, and had fast service. Completely recommend for anyone passing by.

Great little restaurant run by a family with little two girls behind the desk spending their Saturday with their working parents. This reminded me of my childhood in my parents’ Chinese restaurant. We were in the neighborhood and read the great reviews so decided to pop in despite the western menu and clientele. The Xiao long bao was eaten by my partner and declared excellent by him. The Mapo tofu with mushrooms was really very good although not in the classic sense. There were black bean sauce and red chili paste generously sprinkled with cilantro and spring onions. The kung pao chicken had plum sauce, zucchini, celery and bell peppers in it, which also not prepared in the classic sense. However, it was well executed and the flavors were balanced. My only complaint and it is an important one, the peanuts were stale and had the distinct stale taste. That kind of took away the joy of the LP chicken. Otherwise, I would Have given it a 5 star.
