One of the closest points you can get to the boats traveling up and down the Welland Canal. Located just south of Lock 1, it's a narrow strip of grassy park with a winding path for bicycles and pedestrians. This path, which starts here, is part of the Welland Canals Trail system, stretching 45km all the way to Port Colborne on Lake Erie. There is a bit of shade and some benches, but it's otherwise small and not really equipped with other amenities that you might find in other nearby parks. Parking is generally available, and if you happen to be stuck waiting for the lift bridge at Lakeshore Road because a boat is passing through, it's a great alternative compared to sitting in a line of traffic.

Great place to park and go for a stroll along the canal. Plenty of history to see with shipbuilders across the way and the locks. Parking can get filled during busy periods but I've always managed to get my space.

The start of the Welland Canal path that goes all the way to Port Colborne. It's a fantastic trail. We did the entire path. 80km there and back!! It was a great bike ride.

Charles Ansell Park First announced in April 1997 by the Rotary Club of St. Catharines Lakeshore, the Charles Ansell Gateway Park was designed to honour Charles Ansell (the founder of Port Weller Dry Docks); to celebrate the Marine heritage of Niagara; and to showcase the Welland Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Located at the Port Weller Terminus of the Welland Canal, near the intersection of Lakeshore Road and Bunting Road, the three acre (1.25 hectare) park site borders the west side of the canal adjoining Lock One and overlooks the Port Weller shipyard. The overall estimated value of the Gateway project as outlined at the time exceeded $400,000. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Catharines Lakeshore in association with Port Weller Dry Docks and the assistance of its union members, the Park links with the popular Welland Canals Parkway and Trail presently extending to Thorold. The project was planned on a series of five-year stages to accommodate financial donations and in-kind volunteer services and materials.

Lots of space for the kids to run around and see the boats, and the walking path is well maintained and good for all ages.

Great spot to park and watch the ships come and go from lock one. Porta potty in the area which is very clean and taken care of. The trail goes a decent distance along the canal.

Interesting area to walk. You can do either a short or long walk on level ground that is great for persons using mobility aids. If you are lucky you can watch ships going thru the locks
