Wonderful staff, service and atmosphere. Very clean and relaxing. Will definitely return. Hot baths are very nice, and there is clear signage on how to use and respect the facilities. Highly recommend getting dinner and breakfast. Both are delicious and delightfully presented and served. The only challenge can be other foreign guests who do not attempt to respect this traditional Japanese ryokan.

Wonderful place. Typical hotel with also typical dinner and breakfast. Large portions but you have to like the typical food. I am an Italian guy and breakfast in Italy is completed different any way I have to confirm that the quality of food is over the top! Also the staff people is always kind. The owner (a Japanese Granny) Is absolutely loving. This place is a must if you will be in Takayama!!!

Ryokan Tanabe is located on one of the main streets in Takayama, which is pretty practical as you can reach the train station and all main attractions by simply walking. The staff is, as usual in Japan, welcoming and assists you perfectly in any way (although we felt a slightly colder touch and more hotel-y experience compared to other ryokans). Our room had the typical tatami basis and was very pretty. Breakfast and dinner took place in the room and were brought there and presented by the room attendant. All food was delicious and portion sizes extremely generous. The public bathroom can be accessed also in case of tattoos, which will come very handy to some people as this is still often prohibited in Japan in 2022.

It's been 4 years since the visit in February 2018. They have wide rooms and private bath house. Also help us with tour suggestion arround the area. I wish I could be back again someday.

It was a fantastic experience stayed at Ryokan Tanabe. The ladies are lovely and extremly friendly. We were for the check in on first day for three hours. My husband called and let them know we missed the bus. We when arrived there at 9:00pm, the ladies were waiting for us in the lobby, waving to us through the window. We booked the dinner beforehand, but we thought we can’t have it cause it was too late. Well, to our surprise, after we dropped off our luggage, the ladies took us to a room, our dinner was there! Hot and fresh! I just want to kiss them all at that moment! Besides the warmth and kindness of the owners, this hotel is also very clean, quite and the decorations are full of Japanese culture. It is close to most of attractions in the city and the bus terminal . A super market is right beside it.

Amazing Experience! Nice Onsen, great Ryokan. The tipical dinner was so good and the presentation very entertaining. The staff is so nice and Aoyama take care of every our necessity. We also have a good private full body massage in our room for a reasonable price. Very raccomanded if you want a full immersion experience in Japanese culture. No langueges barrier at the reception, instead the room staff speak only Japanese but for us was part of the experience trying to understand the essence of this amazing culture!

Beautiful ryokan that provides memorable experience of staying at traditional Japanese guests house. They have two public hot bathrooms that they alternate by gender every day. Staffs were super nice. The traditional breakfast and dinner were also excellent. Not cheap though, so not suitable for budget travelers.

wonderful ryokan, well located. Dinner and breakfast are just wonderful and everyone is very kind, they work quickly and precisely. We had a spacious room with private bath, my husband also tried the onsen and he said even if it's not very big, it's lovely. You will get the best of this experience if you get some information about Japanese culture before coming, and if you're not picky about food (it would spoil much of the fun!)

Ryokan Tanabe was our first experience in a traditional Japanese inn, and we couldn't have asked for a better or more welcoming choice. The room was quiet, and we found ourselves surprised at the how calm the minimalism of it felt. Staff were friendly and attentive, and the in-room Japanese breakfasts and dinner were tasty and well presented.

If we could give this a higher rating we would! Wonderful people, lovely food and an amazing experience.

Located in the center of town, has free parking. Onsen separates men and women so I don't think this is necessarily a romantic getaway. Service is excellent, Japanese women in their traditional dresses took care of us very well. The inclusive breakfast and dinner are so good. Very delicate dishes, at least 10 of them for each meal.

Ryokan Tanabe was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan! Not only did it have an amazing location in beautiful Takayama with a unique Japanese inn style experience, but we cannot get over the above-and-beyond kindness of the staff. We left early in the morning to catch a bus to our next location, and I accidentally left my sweatshirt in the closet. Our attendant found it, ran out in the SNOW, and caught us at the station just as we were about to board our bus. It was truly so kind and emblematic of their incredible hospitality while we stayed there. Could not recommend more!

👍 This little coffee shop was right by our Air BnB and has a beautiful back garden. They have an Air BnB too but we didn’t stay here though may if we visit Takayama again. The pumpkin cake and coffee were a perfect mid-afternoon treat after exploring Takayama.
