Pity. Such an historic site in Rotterdam has become a tourist trap and ruined by staff who could care less about customer service - did management ban the entire staff from smiling??? Upon entering we ask for a table for two and are led to the left-hand side and given our choice of three dirty tables that haven't been cleaned from the previous customers. I also notice that there are clean empty tables with a nicer water view on the other side so I get up to ask the hostess if we can change to another table with the water view. "There's water where you are," she barks at me. Seriously?? She actually gets paid to speak to customers like this? Or does management hold a competition to see who can ruin the day of the most customers? Another staff member overhears our exchange and says it's alright and seats us at a new table. Unfortunately all 'service' stops there because we sit for almost fifteen minutes with many staff walking by, scowling as much as the ignorant hostess, but no one actually interested in taking our order. We get up and leave via the hotel's entrance where we pass a bellman in uniform who can't be bothered to greet us, or hold open the door, just more scowling. Note to Hotel New York and staff: please get over yourselves, many other welcoming places in Rotterdam are worthy of tourists' hard-earned money.

IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES YOU ARE NOT SAFE HERE IF YOU GET HELP FROM A DARK SKINNED WAITRESS. BE WARNED! IT CAN GET YOU KILLED!!!!! Service treated me terribly bc of allergies. I have food allergies and have a card to inform the kitchen what i exactly cannot eat. I was rudely met by a dark skinned waitress who didnā€™t want to bother taking my card to the kitchen and didnā€™t care about the DEADLY repercussions of that. They used to have very friendly staff that would always accommodate me with my HEALTH DISABILITY. They appear to train (new?) staff differently. I have literally been coming there for almost 10 YEARS! I spoke to someone in charge of service and was helped excellently after talking to that person. A simple substitution was made and something was cut from the dish; Something the dark skinned waitress said was IMPOSSIBLE APPARENTLY. SHE WAS VERY VERY VERY RUDE. All the other staff was very kind and helpful. Shame it ended up this way because even with a substitution the food tasted great, just the aftertaste was horrible bc of that particular interaction. I even gave a small tip because the manager was particularly helpful. I hope the restaurant will use this incident as a learning experience.

if you're not in a hurry, it's a nice place to visit... it's always crowded and noisy, but the atmosphere is very nice. The food is great, but can take long before it arrives sometimes. The same goes for drinks... other than that, it's great, with a nice view on the Maas. Make sure to make reservations in peek hours before you go there!

great place near port. Old historical restaurant. On the ground floor there is a large crestaurant where 400 guests can dine. The wide menu allows our guests to eat extensively or simply in all price ranges and from early morning until late at night. The restaurantā€™s unique atmosphere features high ceilings, colorful lamps, sturdy ship elements and robust pipes and pillars.

A really nice place with impeccable vibes but can be a little too crowded for me especially during peak times making it really difficult to find a place. We ended up awkwardly standing in the middle of the bar with people all around us. The place itself is lovely though. It has an old school bar vibe that sets the atmosphere really well! Would definitely recommend going if you're planning to stop by during the weekdays.

A big, popular and therefore busy restaurant and hotel. So itā€™s good to reserve ahead. The hotel is located in the old offices of the Holland America cruise line, and they have some lovely rooms overlooking the water. The water-view-rooms on the second floor have recently been renovated. The restaurant has a shellfish bar/section, but you can also order from the menu. We were quite happy with the personal service despite the fact that it was busy. Itā€™s a large and quite noisy place, with high ceilings. Great atmosphere but if youā€™re looking for a quiet dining experience then I believe this is not your restaurant.

This hotel could not have been a better place to stay during our trip to Rotterdam. The hotel is beautiful. From the interior, to the exterior, to the views on the water, it was truly a breathtaking hotel. The location was key: a food court was nearby, a smaller Albert Hein was nearby, and the hotel was at the end of a pier, just a brief walk to the Wilhelminaplein tram station. Or, we could walk outside the hotel and take a few steps to the water taxi (reserved in advance). Our room was incredibly cozy and clean, and had all of the amenities. The bed was insanely comfy and large! We can't wait to come back and stay again.

This review is about the restaurant. Food is awful, worst I had in a long time. I had the seafood pasta. Only taste was bitter, nothing made sense. Fries are frozen and so become soggy. I don't know about the hotel, but just don't go to the restaurant. (To mention is that they did take my order off the final bill)

The Hotel New York Basement area is a very cosy spot underneath the main restaurant, with a separate entrance on the side(s) of the building. With great food, and during Christmas (which is when I had lunch there) they had a very pleasant band which made the experience all the better. A definite "would do again"!

Hotel New York's outside terrace offers a great view of the river, making it a nice spot to unwind. While the staff is friendly, service can be slow and a bit disorganized. It's best enjoyed for a leisurely drink as a stop while exploring Rotterdam

Everything we wanted and more. A great water taxi ride, drinks at the bar and then a very tasty meal with fantastic river views from our table. We had a really attentive waiter and had a superb evening. One to remember with so much history on offer

Lovely arrangement for our anniversary. The food was good. Songs sung by a Frank Sinatra tribute act sounded great.

Great location and ambience. The scenery and the service is excellent. I ordered the tuna and it was cooked to perfection. Oysters were fresh and a great starter. Definitely worth the trip here. Would recommend booking a reservation though as it can get quite busy.

There is a nostalgic feeling with this hotel. Since a century ago, this is where passengers stay while waiting for the boat that goes to New York, the Holland America line. The restaurant can be busy and reservation is recommended and the rooms had been renovated that still retained some parts of the history. Big cruise ships stop near the hotel and it's funny if you imagine how the times have evolved.

Was there for a business meeting. You need signal flags to get any attention from staff. Getting your drinks order in the table takes a good 15 minutes. Snack board is really cutting corners. We were with 5, we get three tiny pieces of sausage and three miniscule pieces of cheese. Scenery is nice, otherwise it's best avoided

We came here for an afternoon tea, hotel is an old beautiful building outside, the tea room is modern and feels out of place. The tea selection isnā€™t large but we found one we liked. Plenty of sweet cakes and biscuits, a couple of choices for savoury in sandwiches and wraps and of course you canā€™t have a tea without a scone. I would say this was value for money at Ā£22pp.

Kinda noisy but nice service. It's all about the history. It was special and has artifacts from the cruise ships that brought people to America. We also saw the SS Amsterdam which is docked near the hotel/restaurant. It was really nice to see where brave family members took the leap of faith to come to America

This hotel is much more charming than the photos. Especially the rooms. Had a room with a tub and that was nice. The furniture is a nice design. Thereā€™s a great selection of teas and coffees in the room. Some major points are lost on lack of body wash, ironing board and mini fridge. Tried getting a chair for the shower and thereā€™s only 1 for the whole hotel. Be prepared to take stairs starting with the entrance. It is not an accessible hotel. Whatever you do avoid the restaurant, food took over n hour to show up and was very mediocre and dry. Not worth ā‚¬90 for 2 lunches.

nice hotel with great rooms (but depends on the side, there are many different styles for the rooms), great thing at all in the old walls of a shipping company building, try the restaurant in the basement if you will have the money for

We actually used only the outside terrace for a drink. Nice place to sit and watch the water traffic. Gives a little extra in being an iconic hotel with history. Service was good, nice atmosphere and fairly busy on a sunny day with strong winds.

The tower room is quirky and worth the extra price. Although the bedroom is quite small, it does not feel like it because of the views. Beautiful massive bathroom with 2 walk-in showers and a large bath. The tower upstairs has 4 small balkonies but only two chairs and a small side table. A top choice for a romantic gateway, perhaps too small for a party. The quirky old hotel, with the restaurant, basement bar, old-fashioned barbers is worth the visit alone.

A cosy must stay in Rotterdam. Great service and atmosphere. What impressed me is how well was refurbished. I learned that this building was one of the fewest standing still after world war II when everything around was knocked down. I stay in the hotel during a conference. Rooms are spacious and each of them has own historical touch with some old items. Lighting in the rooms is giving a cosy atmosphere. Restaurant has fast service with great food selection. Atmosphere is great. I strongly recommend it.

This review is about the restaurant. Great expectations total disaster! This was a robbery! The worst food I have had for many years. The rib-eye wasnā€™t good even for a dog. The entrecĆ“te was rubbish, even the fries were awful. I ordered a dry martini cocktail and they brought me a martini served in a small glass like they never have heard the dry martini. Service was even worse, the brought the main dishes at first and after 15 minutes they were bringing the starters. Finally they didnā€™t even bring some dishes we ordered so we had to tell them not to bring them at all. We paid a lot of money for nothing. Strongly advised NOT to eat in this place.

What a place! Old office building of the Holland America Line and the spirit is all there. The surrounding area is fantastic with the Rotterdam port authority next to it and cruise ships mooring next to the hotel. A few restaurants outside and very cool hotel restaurant

Exceptional experience at the Hotel New York. Located in one of the most picturesque places in Rotterdam, we came in to the HNY on a sunny Saturday afternoon to celebrate a 21st birthday and the spread was perfect. Ordering the 5 Course Oyster menu and a seafood sharing platter, the chef's did not hold back with the quantity or flavour! Fresh clams, lobster and oysters were definitely the highlight. The staff were very attentive and helped us with an ideal afternoon. Five stars all round, would definitely recommend to anyone wanting good food and experience. āāāāā

We didn't stay here but had a great cup of smooth coffee. Overlooking the Haas River which is a very busy working river with lots of different vessels coming and going at all rates of knots.

What a review can you possibly give a place where you want to have a quick lunch and wait 2 hours for food? The food was good but service really made me wish to not go there.

Location: New York location is amazing both the terrace as well as the hotel restaurant. Nice vibe and versatile for all types of outings. Terrace has sun till late with its west facing location. 5/5 Food: ok. Used to be really nice years ago with signature avocado salad and cakes but not anymore. 3/5 Service: I had good and bad experiences. It feels a bit like a factory. 3/5

This hotel and restaurant has been here for more than 20 years! This is a great place to go too with large groups. The restaurant has some unique signature dishes, the service is in general good, friendly and efficient but is has it ups and downs.

Our party of four visited the restaurant, as I've had enjoyable meals previously. I brought my wife and friends, and we left thoroughly disappointed with the food and service. It started with a long wait to take our orders, despite the restaurant not being very busy. One of us was a vegetarian, and there were hardly any vegetarian choices. The menu itself seems limited to the past. Our drink order was brought out twice. The tomato soup came out swimming in oil. My wife disliked her Monseur sandwich, which was poorly made The manager we spoke to didn't even apologize for the lousy food, lengthy wait, and indifferent service. While the building and location are fantastic, we will not be coming back in the future to eat here,. I had to apologize to my wife and guest for insisting to eat here. We drove a long way to do so.

Lovely historic Hotel in Rotterdam! Used to be the Port between Europe and America. Restaurant is great, best Mussels iā€˜ve had! Downside was At dinnerā€¦ the wine glass was more ā€žhalf emptyā€œ than ā€žhalf fullā€œ i asked the waiter if that was normal she said ā€žYESā€œ which felt like a rip off!!! (The next order i asked again a different waiter and he was nice enough to chance the glassā€¦)

I visited Rotterdam for a day with my Dad and this was one of THE places to visit according to him. We honestly only got a drink at the terrace, but it seemed to be a great place. I'll say that we visited on a very hot day. The terrace was unfortunately completely cut off from the wind due to it being enclosed on most sides by glass. Which caused it to be very very toasty. I do, however, think that this will be a good thing on any day with temperatures below 21C/70F.

You cannot miss a visit, even if quick, of the New York Hotel in the port area of Rotterdam. The original site whence the pilgrims left to the US, the Hotel showcases photos of emigrants from Europe to the US. The internal restaurant and bar is stunning serving great coffees and wonderful for a business meeting.

Understanding that this is a historic building preserved to a time before accomodations were required will help you decide whether to stay here or just visit. If you can't comfortably climb stairs you will find staying here unpleasant. If you are able and interested in the history of Holland America Line you will love it.

It used to be nice but now it's cheap food with pretentious name and prices. After reading the menu we almost wanted to go to a different restaurant. I'm done with fast food (crokette or tortilla) with prices and pretention that it's fancy restaurant. Finally I ordered the only menu for 60 euros as it had more fish. The minimalistic marinated fish came with mayo drops from the supermarket tube- shamefull. A bit of baked fish with fries cannot be called a main dish. I appreciated that desert was not icecream (which is overwhelmingly common for restaurants just because they are too lasy to bake) but not much taste in it. Service is also bad: walking with plates arround tables and asking who's plate is it is not normal. They did not bring us all the food ordered so my friend ate from my stuff. With alergies it was a big puzzle to find out what they do in the food. This restaurant fell out of my list!!!!

I had High Tea in hotelā€™s restaurant and really enjoyed it! Itā€™s nice experience to see their old interiors which looks like a boat. Also, New York hotel building has something magical in it and I wonder how lucky we are that this survived old times and now can be visited among modern architecture.

This place has a special vibe. My wallet does not allow to go for something nice to eat unfortunately but you will feel at home immediately. Friendly service and a stylish designed place in a historic building where you can feel the history connected to it. Go to check it out and learn more about this special place ...

We went to Hotel New York for my wifeā€™s birthday and were very disappointed. The place itself is interesting and in a good location, but these were the only positive aspects of our visit. It was Sunday lunchtime and very busy and noisy, the design of the interior means that there is nothing to absorb the sound so it was a bit deafening with all the people. However, the worst aspect was the food and service. We ordered a bottle of wine and when the waiter brought it to the table it was already open with some wine missing, so we had to send it back. When the food arrived it was really mediocre and just about warm. The curry just tasted of cloves and the fish and chips tasted like they had been cooked for too long and then left under a heat lamp. Very disappointing. We couldnā€™t recommend and wouldnā€™t go back.

The front office staff were very friendly and provided great service. Obviously the decor is stunning and the room was ok, for more than ā‚¬250,- a night (without breakfast, thats another ā‚¬23,- p.p.), that was disappointing. Little things were broken (light, remote for the airco) and a bit worn down (the furniture and textiles). The stunning view made up for it a bit. We planned on having drinks and oysters at 5 in the oysterbar. Once we were seated. There was no service, not only our table but the whole section of the restaurantā€¦after 25 minutes we went to ask staff for drinks.Oysters are ā‚¬23,50 for 6 pieces. Which is on the menu as a tasting option of different kind of oysters. Unfortunately nobody could explain what oysters they were or what the difference was. After that we had a reservation at the basement restaurant of the hotel. We had a time window of 2 hours because of a show we were going to. We were promised we could do the 5 course dinner in that time. The service was friendly but very pushy. We had 3 staff and a manager topping up the waterglasses, every few minutes and in the end offering a supplementary cheese plate for which we had to wait so long we missed the desert and no solution was offered. To pay ā‚¬250,- for mediocre food and 4 glasses of wine and having to rush out, was a bit of a shame. All in all, room for improvement on all levels.

A cozy place to have lunch or dinner. Specially in the summer where you can sit outside and enjoy the view. Only the service is nowadays not what itā€™s used to be.
