Superb little hostel close to the station within minutes walk of all the main attractions, sake tasting, great restaurants and indoor archery! Yes you can fire arrows after a few glasses of sake. I highly recommend it. Clean, spacious dorm rooms. Lovely, helpful, English speaking staff. Insightful local knowledge. Very hospitable and accomodating. It's got that authentic Japanese feel. Better than the other hostels in the area for sure. Thanks for the nice stay! :)

We visited in February and e were a little disappointed with the temperature throughout, the dorm was far too cold on the first night and the shower and toilet rooms are not heated. One of the bathrooms smelt very unclean. The staff were super friendly and its in a decent location.

We booked Guesthouse Tomaru in a short notice as our plan has forced to changed. Wasn't expecting much as we simply just need a place to stay a night. Fortunately we were very lucky to choose Tomaru. The owner spoke fantastic English and explained everything in a smart and easy way for us to understand. You have everything you need to stay here. The accommodation was so cute and full of character. All amenities provided there which included shampoo/conditioner are top quality compared to all other hotels we have stayed! I forgot to ask him what is the brand of the shampoo and conditioner? It made my her smooth like silk! On top of everything, He's even provided us a local map with all the highlight area he recommended us to give it a go. And he was not wrong! What's a great start of our stay in Takayama with all these essential information provided. Couldn't thank him enough and also the 3 hot warmers for us to warm ourselves when we got there. 5 stars for sure!

Guest House Tomaru is conveniently located right in the middle of town, a short walk from both the bus and train station and the historic centre. The owner, Shindo, speaks fantastic English and was so helpful. He explained exactly where everything was to make sure we made the most of our trip. His wife and children were very friendly and it was lovely to spend time in the guest house. The traditional room was very comfortable and clean, as were all the facilities. They even provided shampoo and body wash for the nearby sento.

Wonderful guesthouse with friendly and helpful owners, comfy traditional tatami bedding, and extremely convenient location near the station. Would love to come back again to visit Hida-Takayama and Guesthouse Tomaru :)

Locationwise towards the Train Station and Bus Centre was a blessing! Towards the Old Town, it was a 10-15 minute walk but very straightforward. The frontdesk staff, Aya & Mizuki was such fun people and extremely welcoming. The entire hostel building and dorm room was perfectly comfortable, spacious, clean and well taken care off, despite being an antique building structure (with modern fittings). This place may have been my favourite stay during my 1 week journey in Japan. They even offered a complimentary cofee/sake drink at their sister hostel! (which we glad we visited as it was such a nice cafe hangout space). There's only one bathroom (a big one), but it wasn't an issue as we went to the public bath (sento) for the authentic Japanese experience. This hostel is a DEFINITE recommendation. I loved it so much.

It's a beautiful old japanese house, very well located near the train station. The members of the staff are young and friendly, but their English is poor. The house wasn't very clean, especially the toilet. After our stay we spent one night in Shirakawa-go, and we were coming back afterwards. They didn't allow us to leave the luggage at the hostel because there were "too many bags".

A nice place to stay if you wanna get a taste for a more traditional Japanese household. My favorite part of the hostel, though, was the staff. Very engaging and fun to hang with. It made my visit to Takayama all the more memorable.

Nice staff, well-kept traditional building and spacious beds. All for a great price. One of the best hostels I've stayed at in japan (exept for the snoring guy next to me, but what can you do)

Pretty good for a hostel. Very close to the station, very nice owner and clean showers / bathrooms. The dormbeds could have better curtains but that's all I can complain about really.

The location is just a minute away from the central bus station, but the real selling point for this hostel is the super friendly and helpful owner, who helped me get to know all there's to do, see, eat and drink in and around takayama, and how to get there :)

A very cozy little hostel on a quiet street in takayama. Great communal areas and a super helpful owner. Close to some great restaurants (check out Jakson Curry) and a short walk to the bus station. About a ten minute walk to the heart of old town Takayama. Showers were hot and luxurious.
